Some of the outside brick work needs repair or replacing at the Vankleek Hill Public Library. “As council is aware, the exterior brick on the library is in poor condition,” stated James McMahon, Champlain Township public works director, in a report during the June 11 session. “The bricks at the top of the walls below the roof parapet exhibit the worst damage, as well as the brick of the chimney extension above the top of the roof.” McMahon’s report stated that the east and north walls of the building, at the corner of Union Street and Main Street, are the main concern with signs of spalling. Tiny fragments of the brick or mortar between bricks crack and break off. He noted that the east wall facing Union Street shows the most wear while the west wall, which faces UIF8JOETPS5BWFSO TFFNTUPCFJOHPPE condition. During the building’s past, McMahon observed, the exterior brick was cleaned but the washing method used was not the correct one and may have contributed to deterioration of the mortar in some places on the east wall. Cette année, l’inondation printanière de la rivière des Outaouais a forcé le report de l’ouverture habituelle de la marina en mai. Mais malgré la décrue, la marina municipale a dû restée fermée jusqu’à ce que le ministère fédéral des Pêches et des Océans puisse inspecter le pont-jetée, pour s’assurer qu’il n’avait pas été endommagé par l’inondation. La marina est finalement ouverte et ce, à temps pour le début de l’été. Les propriétaires de bateaux avec des baux d’été sur les sites d’amarrage doivent maintenant vérifier que leurs quais sont en bon état et que les connexions de services sont prêtes pour la saison. La réouverture de la marina arrive à point nommé pour les entreprises locales de L’Orignal qui profiteront de l’achalandage touristique de la Fête du Canada.
Le temps n’a pas été tendre à l’endroit des murs extérieurs en briques de l’édifice de la Bibliothèque publique de Vankleek Hill. Le service des travaux publics présentera au conseil municipal, en août, un rapport complet de la situation ainsi que des recommandations pour la réparation et le remplacement éventuel de la maçonnerie. —photo Gregg Chamberlain

this year caused high-water problems for a GFXSJWFSTJEFOFJHICPVSIPPETJOUIF7JMMBHF of L’Orignal. It also kept the L’Orignal marina closed past the expected May long week- end opening period for the summer boating season, and also left the beachfront area of L’Orignal Park in need of extra cleanup work. The township budget approved earlier this year did not include money for dealing with an unexpected natural disaster like the recent spring flood. The good news, according to Tessier, is that the cost for the township of this year’s flood is $59,000 as of the May 30 tally of expenses. The total cost for the
township for the 2017 flood was $141,000. Champlain Township didn’t qualify for any disaster relief financial aid from the province in 2017 and may not be eligible for this year’s flood bill either. Tessier also noted that the final damage cost for the 2019 flood may be higher than the May 30 figure, after his department receives expense reports for cleaning up L’Orignal Park beach and any repairs to the marina. The township has a small surplus left over from its 2018 budget. Council approved Tes- sier’s recommendation to use that towards covering the 2019 flood bill.
