real Christian. We know by faith that the Lord Jesus Christ has bought us. We are His by creation, but, praise His holy name, we are also His by redemption—we belong to the One who loved us and gave Him self for us. He bought us, not with any of those prices which the wealthy can pay without sacrifice, but, as we are reminded in 1 Peter 1:18, we were redeemed at in finite cost: “Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, . . . But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.” Who can resist such wonderful love? God claims our bodies as well as our spirits, and He has a purpose in this pos session. How careful we should be lest we defile our bodies 1 “Personal liberty” is the great cry of those who favor alcoholic drinks. How much better it would be if, by faith in Christ Jesus, they could ap preciate the significance of these challeng ing words of Paul: “Ye are not your own . . . ye are bought with a price” ! To the Christian, all other arguments against the sin of intemperance are dimmed by this supreme revelation: “Ye are not your own,” and, “Your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost.” Believe these two truths and act accord ingly, and forever and forever you will be a total abstainer, for it will be your joy to render allegiance to your new Owner and Master and to keep His temple pure, sweet, unsullied, and holy, and to thus “glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” You can drink and be sober on the phys ical level, but you cannot drink and be good, and you cannot drink and be wise. When I had written this sentence, Oliver Herford leaned over my shoulder and read it. “I see what you mean,” he said. “Even the man who drinks soberly is a fool.” “To an extent—he is mentally impaired.” “You shouldn’t be too hard on him,” said Mr. Herford. “When he puts an enemy into his mouth to steal away his brains, it is only a petty larceny he is guilty of anyway.”— V ance T hompson . m T rue T emperance 1. Liquor may haye defenders, but no de fence. Whether or not the world would be vastly benefited by a total and final ban ishment from it of all intoxicating drinks, seems to me not an open question. —A braham L incoln . 2 . We should not discuss moderation with a man. The thing has long since been settled by science. The use of narcotic poisons is simply indecent and criminal. —D r . M atthaei . . 3. Temperance is total abstinence from all things harmful, and moderate use of all things good.— F rances E. W illard . 4. Alcohol encourages crime. There are very few criminals that do not drink. In deed, both for boys and girls, drinking is the road to ruin. The first drink is a fatal step.— M orrison . 5. Alcohol is a habit-forming drug. The statement, “I can take it or leave it,” is an alcoholic illusion. Millions have said this and have gone down to drunkards’ graves. —A nderson . Leader’s H elps f. A lcohol and I ntellect
