experience only babes? May we not term them, without exaggeration, spiritual mon strosities? The neglect of our opportunity for growth is sin. We cannot command growth, but we can hinder it, and it is this that constitutes our sin. There are Chris tians who are always talking of their pref erence for “the simple gospel,” and they believe they are showing their faithfulness and humility, when, all unconsciously, but very really,-they are testifying to their own unfaithfulness and laziness. Those who speak of wishing for nothing save Christ and Him crucified, must not forget that in that very chapter (1 Corinthians 2, R. V.) St. Paul goes on to say, “We speak wisdom, however, among them that are full grown” [mature Christians]. The fact is - that “Christ crucified” covers the whole Chris tian life from grace to glory, and is con cerned not only with the simplest, but also with the deepest truths. —W. H. walk the long lane that seems never to have a turning, to go through those long reaches of life which afford no pleasant surprises, and which depress the spirits in their sameness of terrible drudgery. “The Lord is my strength”—strength to go up. He is to me the power by which I can ascend the Hill of Difficulty and not be afraid. “They shall walk, and not faint.” “The Lord is my strength”—strength to sit still 1 And how difficult is the attainment! . . . To do nothing, just to sit still and wait re quires tremendous strength. “The Lord is my strength.” “Our sufficiency is of God.” —J. H. J owett . NOVEMBER 27 Spiritual Immaturity “Ye have need that one teach you again” (Heb. 5:12). God gives us full opportunity to grow. . . . To use Dr. Andrew Murray’s illustra tion, a babe of three months is a beautiful picture, natural and delightful, but a babe of twenty years old would be a monstros ity. What, then, must God think and feel concerning those who have been “in Christ” —born again for years, and are in spiritual
manufacture as I witnessed it many years ago. The molten materials were poured out on an iron table with raised edges; an iron roller, resting on the edges, was passed along over the mass, the result being a slab of rough plate glass—real and true plate glass—but rough, and opaque. In the next room these slabs were laid in pairs, with sand and water between, rubbing each other by machinery; in another room the process was repeated with emery and oil; and in the final stage each plate was pol ished with chamois leather and rouge. And so each plate received the highest polish of which it was capable—“without spot,” “without blemish.” Thus God takes up into His scheme of discipline all the varied events of life, and makes them “work to gether for good” in the accomplishment of His purpose, that we become “perfect and entire, wanting nothing.” —S elected . NOVEMBER 24 Removing Causes of D iscouragem ent “Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God" (Psa. 42:11). It is good to investigate the cause of our grief. To understand its cause is to be well on the way toward its cure. Is it not when the sense of God’s presence has been lost, when the vision of His face has been obscured, that the soul sinks into sadness, depression, and despair ? When God is again introduced into the sorrow of our circumstances, when once more our eyes are turned toward Him, and the sense of His presence is restored, then sadness and disquietness go. “In thy presence is fulness of joy.” God is the universal dispeller of all gloom. He is the glorious dispenser of all gladness in the soul. “The joy that comes when He is-near, The rest He gives so free from fear, The hope in Him so bright and clear Are more than tongue can tell.” —B. M c C all B arbour . NOVEMBER 25 Growing in Love "This I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more" (Phil. 1:9). Tradition tells that when the Apostle John, too old and feeble to utter more than a sentence, was carried into the Chris tian assemblies, he would raise his withered hands, and say, “Little children, love one another.” As the years rapidly pass, and we try to take stock of our spiritual growth, perhaps nothing tests us more closely, or more profitably, than the ques tion : Have we grown in love ? Are we more tender and gracious at home than we were twelve months ago? Are we kinder and more patient in our business relations ? Can we bear criticism more sweetly than we could a year ago? Is the service of others less a task and more a delight than it used to be ? Do we find it easier to love all men, all classes, all nations? “This I pray,” says Paul, “that your love may abound yet more and more” (Phil. 1:9). —D. M. P anton . NOVEMBER 26 Strength “The Lord Jehovah is my strength" (Isa. 12:2). “As thy days, so shall thy strength be,” strength of will, strength of affection, strength of judgment, strength of ideals, and strength of achievement. “The Lord is my strength”—strength to go on.
