Smurfit Westrock To Close Facility In Cedar Rapids, IA According to a Worker Adjustment and Re- training Notification filed with the state this week, Smurfit Westrock is closing a facility in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The site produces “corrugated packaging such as standard cases, boxes and trays suit- able for all industries,” Smurfit Westrock said on its website. Production will move to other facilities in Smurfit Westrock’s network, ac- cording to Robby Johnson, director of exter- nal communications for North America. The shutdown will affect 100 employees, the company reported. Layoffs are slated for October 4, according to the notice, and clos- ing activities will be complete by mid-October. Outplacement assistance will be available for impacted employees and eligible employees may apply for open positions within the com- pany, Johnson said. Smurfit Westrock recently celebrated its one-year anniversary following the combi- nation of Smurfit Kappa and WestRock. On a earnings call last week, CEO Tony Smurfit said the company would “continue to optimize our system through the elimination of non-strate- gic or inefficient assets,” as it looks to elimi- nate 600,000 tons of capacity.

PPC Next 2025 Inspires, Connects Folding Carton Pros BY PAPERBOARD PACKAGING COUNCIL In an industry where innovation, collaboration, and leadership deter- mine the pace of progress, PPC Next: Leadership Summit 2025, held July 30–August 1, 2025, at the Omni Frisco at The Star in Frisco, Texas, proved that the future is in capable hands. Over two days, leaders from across the folding carton sector came together not just to learn, but to challenge themselves, share openly, and reimagine what’s possible.

From candid conversations about the realities of leading through change to hands-on workshops that turned big ideas into practi- cal strategies, this year’s summit built on the momentum of its inau- gural event with an even deeper focus on practical leadership skills, cross-functional collaboration, and strategies for navigating workforce challenges. Whether on the plant floor, in the design studio, or in the C-suite, participants left with the clarity, confidence, and connections to lead with greater impact: for their teams, their companies, and the industry as a whole. Designed for managers, directors, and executives from across op- erations, sales, marketing, design, and plant management, PPC Next delivered a highly interactive program that equipped attendees with tangible leadership skills, deepened their cross-functional understand- ing, and fostered a stronger sense of community within the paperboard packaging industry. CONTINUED ON PAGE 24 Dan Irwin, professional speaker and author, speaks with attendees about the 3 Habits of Consciously Intentional Leaders at PPC Next 2025.

Cascades Provides Updates On Bear Island, Niagara Falls Operations Montreal, Quebec based Cascades has announced the early closure of corrugated medium manufacturing opera- tions in Niagara Falls in light of notable tonnage increases at Bear Island. According to reports from industry analysts, second-quarter sales in its packaging business were re- ported to be stable as shipments were steady and bene- fitting from price increases and lower raw material costs. Cascades also noted that slightly higher shipments for corrugated products reflected seasonality and softer Q1 levels. Still, overall company results dampened by weaker volumes. CEO Hugues Simon said on an earnings call that Q2 performance was in line with the company’s expecta- tions, as it continues to see “cautiousness” in demand, giv- en trade policy and tariff uncertainty globally. Bear Island Operations Cascades’ operation at Bear Island, Virginia, which started up in 2023, is currently profitable, Simon con- firmed to analysts. Following issues last year, production levels were up eight percent from Q1 to 82,000 tons. “This trend has continued into July,” when production averaged 1,100 tons per day, reflecting approximately 91 percent of the facility’s targeted ramp-up, the company reported. “We are forecasting a stronger second half of 2025 and are confident that we’ll continue to close the gap.” It’s been

mostly running OCC, where pricing has been steady. The site has flexibility to incorporate more mixed paper in the future, Simon said. Accelerated Niagara Falls Closure The company announced in July it would close a corru- gated medium manufacturing facility in Niagara Falls, New York, as part of packaging business optimization plans, affecting 123 employees. Cascades originally said produc- tion would end by September 3. On the most recent earn- ings call, Simon said that improved momentum at Bear Island contributed to Cascades’ decision to cease produc- tion at Niagara Falls early, on August 11. The Niagara Falls closure resulted in a $23 million impairment charge. Executives acknowledged ongoing economic un- certainty and how that could scramble demand in North America. “We are anticipating third quarter performance to be slightly higher sequentially,” per a Cascades’ press release. “We remain cautious in packaging, where results are expected to be largely stable as benefits from contin- ued favorable pricing and raw material trends are forecast- ed to be offset by constrained demand levels.” Cascades now forecasts that 2025 capital expendi- tures will total $150 million, down from an earlier projec- tion of $175 million. The company is targeting $100 million in annual profitability improvement by the end of 2026. Founded in 1964, Cascades employs approximately 9,600 women and men across a network of 66 operating facilities, including 17 Recovery and Recycling facilities.

“paperization” in recent years, in part motivated by com- panies trying to reduce overall plastic consumption. According to USDA, the program was funded by a 35 cents-per-ton fee paid by large domestic manufacturers and importers of paper and paper-based packaging, ex- empting those with less than 100,000 tons annually. For 2025, P+PB reported having a budget of $20 million, with $14 million in media spending. The board featured seven paper manufacturers and one importer. Featured leaders are from Domtar, Geor- gia-Pacific, Graphic Packaging International, International Paper, Sappi, Smurfit Westrock, Suzano and Sylvamo. Last month, USDA held a referendum on continuing the program, requiring a majority vote in favor. The agency disclosed this week that only about 26 percent of eligible domestic manufacturers and importers, representing less than 10 percent of the volume represented in the referen- dum, supported continuing the order. “While I am very disappointed by the results, I am proud of all the progress we have made as an industry speaking with one voice and the positive improvements in industry reputation and preference for its products,” said Hansan, who has been with the group since 2014. “We are grateful to the companies and their employees who supported the program with their talent and time for more than 11 years.” Now, the national marketing campaigns and organiza-

Greif To Sell Southeast Timberlands For $462M

Delaware, Ohio based Greif has announced its agreement to sell the timberlands it owns across the southeastern United States to Molpus Woodlands Group for $462 mil- lion. The divestiture includes more than 173,000 acres of timberlands managed by wholly owned subsidiary Soterra. The deal is expected to close sometime around the end of Greif’s fiscal year, which is September 30. The compa- ny first disclosed its intention to sell these assets during a February earnings call. The move aligns with recent re- structuring and optimization efforts. “The sale of the Soterra timberlands aligns with our strategy to focus our portfolio on opportunities where Greif can be an industry leader,” said CEO Ole Rosgaard in a news release. “This transaction enhances our ability to invest in higher-margin, less cyclical markets, and po- sitions Greif for further long-term success and value cre- ation.”

Greif completed a reorganization late last year in which it shifted from geography-based operations to sub- strate-based segments, with an enhanced focus on poly- mer-based solutions. The company also introduced a plan in December 2024 to reduce costs by $100 million by the end of FY 2027. Greif announced in early July that it would sell its con- tainerboard business to Packaging Corporation of Ameri- ca for $1.8 billion in cash. The transaction is expected to close by the end of September and “represents a pivot- al step in our work to sharpen our portfolio, enhance our capital efficiency, and advance our growth priorities,” said Rosgaard in a July statement. This year, the company also has announced multiple facility closures, including a containerboard and uncoated recycled paperboard mill in Fitchburg, Massachusetts; a non-integrated, uncoated recycled paperboard machine in Austell, Georgia; a coated and uncoated recycled pa- perboard mill in Los Angeles; and a facility in Merced, Cal- ifornia, that manufactures industrial steel drums and small polymer containers. In total, approximately 255 jobs were cut in those closures. Cash proceeds from the timberland sale will go toward debt reduction, which executives flagged in December as a near-term priority. “One of the most powerful things about PPC Next is how it breaks down silos,” said Hilda Murray, Vice Chair of PPC’s Board of Directors. “We had people from opera- tions, design, sales, and leadership all in the same room, sharing the real challenges they face and the lessons they’ve learned. When you hear those stories, the wins, the failures, the pivots, you realize how much we can learn from one another. It’s a reminder that leadership is a jour- ney, and we’re all better when we walk it together.” After lunch, the energy shifted with Dan Irvin, profes- sional speaker and author, who delivered 3 Habits of Con- sciously Intentional Leaders. Dan’s high-energy presen- tation pushed attendees to break out of a “firefighting” mindset and adopt a leadership style grounded in clari- ty, focus, and accountability. Using his SMARTEST Goals framework, he walked participants through ways to align daily actions with larger strategic objectives, cut through distractions that drain productivity, and build habits that

inspire team performance. Attendees worked through re- al-life scenarios, identifying where they could shift from reactive decision-making to proactive leadership, and left with concrete action plans to implement immediately upon returning to their organizations. Day One concluded with A Day in My Life: Real Talk Discussions, facilitated by Tiffany Koettel, President of Growth Mindset Sales. Far from a surface-level exchange, Tiffany’s session created an environment where leaders could speak candidly about the challenges, mindsets, and habits that define strong, sustainable leadership in the pa- perboard packaging industry. The session opened with a “Day in the Life” panel fea- turing Arika Stoecker of Case Paper Company, Patrick Debusk of Frankston Packaging Company, and Al Horn of Pusterla US. Their frank reflections on the realities of lead- ership, from navigating plant-floor pressures to bridging communication gaps across departments, set the stage for deeper, table-level conversations. Each table was assigned a focused topic such as Dan Irvin delivered a dynamic presentation that pushed at- tendees to break out of a firefighting mindset.
