customers. It will be used to pack heavier, or more fragile items that need more protection than a padded envelope provides. On-demand, made-to-fit paper bags : Amazon’s pack- aging engineers reimagined a machine originally used to create plastic bags, and retrofitted it to cut made-to- fit paper bags. Sensors measure an order’s dimensions, and then the new device creates a correctly sized, pro- tective bag using a durable, weather-resistant paper and heat-sealing technology. After being tested in fulfilment centres in Germany and the UK, this new technology will now be rolled out across both countries, as well as France, Italy, and Spain. By packing items in recyclable, light paper packaging, without the need for padding, the machines help to avoid more than 26 grams of packaging per shipment, on average. Lightweight paper bags used by Amazon are up to 90 percent lighter than similar-sized cardboard boxes. Innovative labelling technology : The Universal Robotic Labeller is a high-speed auto-labelling machine that can place smaller labels onto packages, including irregularly shaped items. It can use labels up to 75 percent smaller than standard labels, helping to reduce packaging dimen- sions and using less material overall. The labels can also be placed onto paper bags, or directly onto items that ship in their own product packaging. Since 2015, Amazon has reduced its average per-ship- ment packaging weight by 43 percent, representing more than three million metric tons of packaging avoided—the equivalent weight of more than 295 of Paris’ iconic Eiffel Tower. As part of its overall efforts to improve packaging across its European operations, the company prioritizes paper-based packaging solutions where possible. This packaging can often be recycled through home recycling pickup. Across its fulfilment network, Amazon replaced its sin- gle-use plastic delivery bags and air pillows with 100 per- cent recyclable paper and cardboard packaging that can be recycled in household recycling in 2022. In Europe, this—combined with other initiatives—has helped the com- pany avoid more than 1 billion single-use plastic delivery bags since 2019. Meanwhile, in India, Amazon removed single-use, thin-film plastic packaging originating from Amazon’s fulfilment network in the country since 2020. In Japan, except for some services such as chilled or frozen products, Amazon stopped packing items in single-use plastic delivery bags for orders from its fulfilment centers. As of October 2024, the company has removed all plastic air pillows from its delivery packaging used at glob- al fulfilment centers. As part of this transition, Amazon was able to quickly expand its use of paper filler made from 100 percent recycled content across North America to replace plastic air pillows, its biggest reduction in plastic packaging in North America to date.
