Nestlé, IBM Use Generative AI To Develop Sustainable Food Packaging The research and development team at Nestlé, reportedly the world’s largest food and beverage company, is work- ing with IBM Research to use AI and deep tech for pack- aging innovations. The collaboration has yielded a generative AI tool re- portedly capable of identifying novel high-barrier packaging materials that could accelerate the development process. The AI technology works by constructing a knowl- edge base from public and proprietary documents, then

The model could reduce the typically years-long re- search process for developing sustainable packaging solutions. The initiative aligns with Nestlé’s broader sustainabili- ty goals of reducing virgin plastic use and moving toward recyclable mono-material and paper-based solutions. The company plans to utilize this technology to identify future packaging materials that balance cost, recyclability and functionality. Nestlé recently opened a new research and develop- ment center dedicated to deep tech. The center will focus on developing advanced technologies, including sensors, robotics and high-performing AI solutions to enhance re- search efficiency and operations.
