Situated on the beautiful banks of the River Cart, Paisley is Scotland’s biggest town. Only 7 miles west of Glasgow, it boasts a fascinating heritage, as well as some truly wonderful Victorian and Edwardian architecture. Paisley has always been an entrepreneurial town, rich and diverse in its culture. Paisley Abbey, the birthplace of the Royal Stewarts, stands proud in all its architectural magnificence in the town centre. Built in the 12th Century, it is one of Scotland’s finest churches and one of the few medieval abbeys still in use today. Paisley is probably best known for the history of its textile industry. It was unrivalled when it came to its thread production and the skill of its weavers. Paisley Museum houses one of the world’s biggest collections of Paisley shawls and patterns. The industry was dominated by the Coats and Clark families and the town has a resplendent architectural legacy which was gifted by them.
