her, "Do you have a kitchen god?” . “We have,” nodded Pao Lan. S “I f the heavenly Father didn’t send riain for months and months, and all the wheat dried up, could your kitchen god feed you?” "No, he couldn’t,” answered the child. Pao Lan remembered how hungry she and her family were two years before when there had been almost no food in their house all win ter long. “Then why do you worship a false god instead of the only true one?” asked the missionary. As Pao Lan thought' about this •question, the missionary lady contin ued talking about the gifts our heav enly Father has given: •“He loved us so much that He gave us His only Son, Jesus, to die for us and to save us from our sins.” Pao Lan was surprised at the words, “gave His only Son.” That was won derful! She knew how precious sons were, and no one she knew would give up a son for anything or anyone else though they might give up a daughter. There must be some deeper meaning to this giving. She asked the lady, “What does this heavenly Father want in return for all this?” “He doesn’t want any thing in re- *turn,” answered the missionary, “ but He wants you to thank Him, trust Him, and love Him.” Just then the missionary lady looked down at Pao Lan’s beautiful new padded gown. She said,’ “If you had not said ‘thank you,’ to your mother when she gave you your new gown don’t you think you would have been very impolite? The hehvenly Father has .given you more than that; shouldn’t you thank Him even more?” “yes,” answered Pao Lan, “ but I don’t know how.” “Would you like to learn a little verse to thank the heavenly Father?” , As Pao Lan nodded her Jiead, the missionary began to sing softly: "Thank You, heavenly Father, for giving me my food. Thank you, heavenly Father, for clothes and all things good, • Thaiik You for our Saviour Lord, Thank You for your holy Word." Pao Lan said the words over and over.

■ Suddenly she heard a voice calling, “Pao Lari, Pao Lan, Lai! (Come).” ’ She turned to run, and the mission ary had just time to give her a copy ■of the prayer verse, ‘and to invite her to come to the Gospel Hall. Then the child Was gone. La ter as the two ladies walked home through the .narrow streets, they talked together of what had hap pened that. day. “Did you see that bright little girl I was talking with?” orie asked the other. “I wonder whether she will re member anything she heard. She seemed to be interested, but she is so young.” As they walked along, both the mis sionaries. prayed in their hearts. They asked the Lord Jesus to remind Pao Lan of all she had heard about Him that day. , Meanwhile, Pao Lan was telling her mother about the foreigners. She sang the chorus and the prayer the missionary had taught her. Her mother listened quietly, but when Pao Lan told her the kitchen god was no use and asked why they worshiped him, her mother became frightened and told Pao Lan to stop such non sense. But that night as Pao Lan looked up at the stars sjie said her “ thank you” prayer softly to the heav enly Father, and her heart felt warm and happy. She had been a little heathen girl, but now she knew about the one true Gpd. New Kl Y. B. C.
