Chasing a GOLDEN TICKET
THE ROAD TO THE CUP
T he road to the 2026 Lexus Melbourne Cup is well underway, with another opportunity to secure a place in the capacity 24-horse field on offer in the Listed Lexus Andrew Ramsden. In 2026, eleven golden tickets are available through ballot-exempt races staged across Victoria, along with three international qualifiers. These include the Grade 2 Belmont Gold Cup (3200m) at Saratoga in the USA, the Ebor Handicap at York in the UK, and the newly added Group 2 Prix Kergolay (3000m) at Deauville in France. EARLY QUALIFIERS ON HOME SOIL The first golden ticket for 2026 was secured by Whisky On The Hill , trained by Glen Thompson , with a deserved victory in the Listed Lexus Roy Higgins (2600m) on TAB Australian Cup Day. After being balloted out of the past two Lexus Melbourne Cups and narrowly missing a start last year, the stayer is now guaranteed a place in this year’s race. He had previously tasted success on TAB Champions Stakes Day, winning the Group 3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2600m) and collecting a $200,000 bonus for horses that were final acceptors in the Cup but failed to gain a start.
8
GOLDEN TICKET
The Listed Lexus Andrew Ramsden (2800m) is the second golden ticket race. First granted ballot exemption status in 2019, the race has produced four Lexus Melbourne Cup runners since. Won last year by Basilinna , it provides connections with valuable time to map out a Cup preparation aimed at peaking on the first Tuesday in November. INTERNATIONAL GOLDEN TICKETS The road to the Cup then heads abroad, beginning with the Grade 2 Belmont Gold Cup (3200m) in the United States on June 4. The race has been held at Saratoga for the past three years while Belmont Park undergoes redevelopment. In challenging conditions last year, the race was shifted to the dirt and shortened in distance, with Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott ’s Parchment Party producing a dominant eight-length victory in the sloppy conditions. Despite expectations that connections might decline the trip down under, he travelled to Australia and made history as the first American- trained runner in the race. Attention then turns to the UK and the historic Ebor Handicap (2816m) at York on August 22. The race was given golden ticket status in 2023, but has produced strong Melbourne Cup contenders prior to that. Champion Irish trainer Willie Mullins ’ Absurde won the first golden ticket on offer for the Ebor and took up the challenge of bringing the gelding down for the Cup, finishing a credible seventh in the Cup, before subsequent runs of fifth in 2024 and eighth in 2025.

GOLDEN TICKET
New to the golden ticket schedule in 2026 is the Group 2 Prix Kergolay (3000m) at Deauville. While newly recognised as a qualifier, the race has a proven history as a Cup pathway. Americain (2010), Dunaden (2011), and Protectionist (2014) all contested the Kergolay before claiming Melbourne Cup success, with the first two completing the Kergolay–Geelong Cup–Melbourne Cup progression. THE SPRING PATHWAY BUILDS Back in Australia, the road to the Cup ramps up into the spring. The Group 3 Lexus Archer Stakes (2500m), run on Crown Makybe Diva Stakes Day (September 12), continues its long history as a ballot-exempt race dating back to 1979. First run in 1869 and moved to September in 2024, the race has produced two Cup winners this century — Brew (2000) and Shocking (2009). On TAB Turnbull Stakes Day, the Group 3 Lexus Bart Cummings (2500m) offers another golden ticket. Named after the legendary trainer who won 12 Melbourne Cups, the race has become a key lead-up, with each of the past ten winners progressing into the final Cup field. MAJOR LEAD-UP RACES The Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) remains the premier lead-up, sitting just over two weeks before the Lexus Melbourne Cup. In 2025, Half Yours became the thirteenth horse to complete the Caulfield Cup– Melbourne Cup double.
After winning a golden ticket throught the Grade 2 Belmont Gold Cup at Saratoga USA, the big American Parchment Party became the first horse trained in the US to run in the Cup. (Image credit: Pat Scala/Racing Photos)

GOLDEN TICKET
Local stayer Torranzino claimed the first golden ticket exemption offered through the Geelong Cup, running a gallant fifth in the Lexus Melbourne Cup two weeks later. (Image credit: Pat Scala/Racing Photos)
Two additional races now hold golden ticket status, the Group 3 Geelong Cup (2400m) and the Group 2 Moonee Valley Gold Cup (2500m), the latter to be run at Flemington in 2026 due to the major course redevelopments being conducted at the Moonee Valley site. The Geelong Cup continues to be a proven pathway, with Media Puzzle , Americain , and Dunaden all completing the Geelong–Melbourne Cup double. In its first year as a golden ticket race, Torranzino won at Geelong before finishing a strong fifth in the 2025 Lexus Melbourne Cup. The Moonee Valley Gold Cup, first run in 1883, has also produced notable Cup performers. Okita Soushi finished third in the 2024 Lexus Melbourne Cup after winning the race, while Kingston Rule (1990) remains the most recent horse to complete the double. THE COX PLATE FACTOR The Group 1 W.S. Cox Plate (2040m) will be run at Flemington in 2026, marking a rare shift from Moonee Valley. Five horses have completed the Cox Plate–Melbourne Cup double, most recently the great Makybe Diva in 2005 during her historic third Cup triumph. Other champions to achieve the feat include Saintly , Rising Fast , Phar Lap , and Nightmarch . In modern times, few attempt the demanding double, with Sir Dragonet the most recent, finishing sixth in the 2020 Lexus Melbourne Cup. Makybe Diva’s 2005 campaign remains the benchmark. Her dominant Cox Plate victory paving the way for a final career start that delivered a third Melbourne Cup and secured her place among racing’s immortals.

WINTER RACE SERIES
Established by the Victoria Racing Club in 2009, the Winter Race Series brings together races like the Listed VRC-CRV Winter Championship Final (1600m), which had been run since 1979, and a number of other finals for horses young and established, both sprinters and stayers. To qualify for Flemington Finals Race Day on Saturday 4 July, which offers over $1.5 million in prizemoney, horses must earn their way into the finals by competing in heats right across Victoria. Horses that finish First and Second in nominated heats will be exempt from the ballot in the respective final.
Who will be the next star to emerge?
12
WINTER RACE SERIES
CRESWICK SPRINT SERIES Designed for three-year-old sprinters, the Creswick Sprint Series features heats over 1000m to 1200m at Flemington, Caulfield and Mornington. The series honours Sir Alexander (Alec) Reid Creswick (1912–83), a long-serving VRC Committee member (1959–83) and Chairman from 1969 to 1977. His family’s association with the Club dates back to 1864, when his great-great-grandfather Henry Creswick was a foundation committee member. Sir Alec was a passionate horseman. Master of the Melbourne Hunt Club, a leading polo player, and head of the Equestrian Federation of Australia, who strongly
supported Australia’s Olympic equestrian efforts. He also bred and raced top- class horses, including champion filly True Course. The series culminates in the $175,000 Listed A.R. Creswick Stakes (1200m) on Flemington Finals Race Day. SANTA ANA LANE SPRINT SERIES
Named in honour of five-time Group 1- winning sprinter, Santa Ana Lane, this open-age sprint series celebrates one of Australia’s most accomplished modern sprinters.
Trained by Anthony Freedman, Santa Ana Lane earned more than $8 million in prizemoney, with elite victories across four states, including the VRC Sprint Classic (1200m) at Flemington. Santa Ana Lane now enjoys retirement at Living Legends in Oaklands Junction. The series attracts high-quality winter sprinters, with heats conducted up Flemington’s famous straight as well as at Caulfield, Sandown, Warrnambool and Swan Hill. It concludes with the $175,000 Listed Santa Ana Lane Sprint Series Final. TAJ ROSSI SERIES
Aimed at later-developing two-year-olds suited to the mile, the Taj Rossi Series is named after the outstanding Bart Cummings-trained colt. Purchased for $18,000 at the 1972 Adelaide Yearling Sales, Taj Rossi quickly rose to prominence, producing a remarkable three-year-old campaign. After showing promies with early wins in Adelaide and Melbourne, he went on a
stunning run, winning six of seven starts, including the Ascot Vale Stakes, Moonee Valley Stakes, Cox Plate, Victoria Derby, George Adams Handicap and Sandown Guineas. His performances earned him the 1973–74 Australian Racehorse of the Year title. Later retired to stud, Taj Rossi sired VRC Oaks winner Taj Eclipse. The series final is run over 1600 metres on Flemington Finals Race Day.
13
WINTER RACE SERIES
VRC-CRV WINTER CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES This open-class mile series features heats at Sandown, Swan Hill, Caulfield and Flemington, bringing together in-form gallopers across distances of 1400m to 1600m. The series culminates in the $200,000 Listed VRC–CRV Winter Championship Series Final on Flemington Finals Race Day. BANJO PATERSON SERIES
This series is for open stayers and is named in honour of revered author and poet Andrew Barton ‘Banjo’ Paterson, who had a lifelong love affair with horses. Polo matches, picnic races and riding his own pony were all part of his early life in country NSW. After moving to Sydney and qualifying as a solicitor, he began submitting poetry to The Bulletin under the pseudonym “The Banjo”, the name of a racehorse his father had owned.
His various careers included jockey, horse trainer in the Middle East during WWI and racing journal editor, but it’s his wonderful bush ballads and poems – such as The Man From Snowy River – that truly reflect his equine passion.
In 1886, he published A Dream of the Melbourne Cu p; the first of many racing ballads, including Old Pardon , the Son of Reprieve , The Open Steeplechase , Rio Grande’s Last Race and The Wargilah Handicap . NEXT GENERATION SPRINTER SERIES Introduced to highlight emerging two-year-old talent, this series provides valuable experience on Flemington’s unique straight course. Heats are held at Flemington, Caulfield, Sandown and Swan Hill, with the $150,000 final to be run down the Flemington Straight Six, helping develop the next wave of elite Australian sprinters. LEILANI SERIES
This fillies and mares series honours Leilani, one of Bart Cummings’ most admired champions. Winner of the 1974 AJC Oaks, she enjoyed a dominant four- year-old season, claiming the Turnbull Stakes, Toorak Handicap, Caulfield Cup and Mackinnon Stakes before finishing second to stablemate Think Big in the Melbourne Cup. She continued her success the following
autumn, winning the Orr Stakes, St George Stakes and Australian Cup. Leilani won 14 of her 28 starts and was so highly regarded by Cummings that he named his Sydney stable, Leilani Lodge, in her honour. *The Leilani Series was combined with the former Rivette Series in 2023. SILVER BOWL SERIES Targeting three-year-old milers, the Silver Bowl Series includes heats over 1400m to 1600m at Flemington, Caulfield and Sandown. The series concludes with a $150,000 quality handicap over 1600m on Flemington Finals Race Day.

races, including both the Victoria Derby and Australian Derby, and was crowned Australian Racehorse of the Year in 1993–94. His Flemington successes included two Lightning Stakes victories.
