Sebastien Grech (Year 12) looks back at a turbulent time in which Dulwich musicians have learnt to embrace change and develop digitally

TIME TO

As the 2019 annual Dulwich Winter Concert drew to a close, no musician could have envisioned the extraordinary events the next year would hold, or their impact on the creative arts as a whole. The concert was a celebration of the stellar quatercentenary year that Dulwich Music had enjoyed. The Olympiad had been a fantastic showcase, allowing students from 11 schools to collaborate, while the Amsterdam Chamber Music tour was also a great success. 2020 was intended to offer yet more musical highlights, but plans were thrown into jeopardy when the country was placed under national lockdown. For Dulwich musicians, lockdown meant a complete change in the way they went about their day. Music exams were cancelled and live concerts were postponed. There was a shift to a digitally based approach, which has brought both blessings and frustrations. Many sectors and industries impacted by Covid-19 were forced to incorporate technology into their day- to-day activities, and music has been no exception.
