even on a Surface with a broken screen. This year she has taken on the role of Head of Upper School Mathematics, and managed all the challenges of a difficult year with grace and poise. During her time in the department, Emily has taken on the monitoring of new colleagues and trainee teachers. She has looked after them with care and diligence, imparting her love of the subject, and her calm, measured approach has always put them at ease. Throughout her time at Dulwich, Emily has served as a tutor in the Upper School, building excellent relationships with the students in her form, enabling them to flourish and develop independence. Emily has made extensive contributions to the wider College life, most notably through her weekly Community Action gardening project. As part of the community service day for the College’s 400th year, she led a larger group in an extensive project in Dulwich Park. Emily will be massively missed by the Maths Department. She is someone who thinks incredibly hard about teaching as a craft, and she is always determined to innovate and focus on what is the most important for her students. We wish her the very best as she moves to the Perse School in Cambridge.

Andy has been with the Physics Department for two years, having trained with us via the SCITT programme after leaving a career as a civil engineer. He was instantly a good fit, and we were very lucky to add him to our team. In his training year he demonstrated a natural teaching ability, learning very quickly, and he now exhibits qualities of a teacher you would not imagine has only been in the game for two years. In his NQT year, Andy accompanied the Year 12 physicists on a trip to CERN, assisting with the International Young Physicists’ Tournament. He devoted many hours to helping students with their projects after school, consistently demonstrating his passion not only for the subject, but also for seeing his students flourish. To gain wider experience at the College, he took on the role of covering a Day Housemaster position, going on to become the permanent Housemaster for Marlowe.

Throughout this academic year, Andy has gone from strength to strength. His pragmatic outlook has enabled him to remain grounded during the stressful remote-learning periods, and to continue to deliver excellent online lessons. Andy works tremendously hard to keep himself ahead of his students and is always planning and improving resources to deliver the best content. He also delivered the A level plus Engineering option, which saw him share his knowledge of the field with aspiring engineers, an experience the students greatly appreciated. Andy also took on the added responsibility of mentoring other trainee teachers this year, sharing the lessons he has learned and helping them develop their teaching practice. Dulwich College Singapore is incredibly lucky to be adding Andy to their Physics team. His dependability is second to none and we all wish him the best of luck!

Jordan jumped headfirst into the PE Department in September 2018 after establishing a fantastic reputation in his first teaching job, up north at Sedbergh. His experience and enthusiasm for rugby was as advertised, but it was soon apparent that Jordan was multi-talented and would be contributing to all areas of College life. He has been a committed form tutor, a Visiting Tutor in The Orchard, taught Physical Education A level, taken rugby and football teams, assisted with the High Performance Programme as well as being Master in Charge of tennis and racquet sports. His energetic teaching style is infectious and the boys, whether Year 3 or the 1st XV, thrive on his insistence that they ‘bring the noise’ at all times.

His biggest challenge at Dulwich has been coping with the tropical microclimate of the tennis courts compared to his native Northern Ireland, and he and James Hanks are the only staff members known to carry factor 30 sun cream in the Lent term. Jordan also jumped headlong into all social occasions and will be remembered fondly for being great company on tours, his appreciation of Bruce Springsteen tribute acts and his spontaneous breaking into song at birthday parties. The relatively short time he has spent here far belies his impact. He now returns to the temperate climate of Sedbergh having covered every inch of the campus as well as every road in Greater London as part of his Ironman marathon training. We will cross paths with him again every March at the Rosslyn Park 7s. He can bring the noise, and we will bring the sun cream.
