Shell- shocked
Where do we trade In these resources? To hang ourselves from the gallows - Deter nature’s true course. Confined to my own little corner, Praying piously to be absolved. Cynics circle, snap and snack With bloodied gum and slack jaw. I do fear the minister even when they bare truth - In the school of life I learnt to write No thing as absolute. Honey is Sweet I do not assert Dare I say Though, It seems so... They go, Cavalry of Wooden Stallion Our heroes proceed to mount, Unrest within the battalion; Martyrs are sniffed out. The hollow knock of changed men Rings loud and clear. And so return to manichaeistic Duel draws Ever near.

We were all smiling. Crazy isn’t it. Smiling . Columns of men, stretching from the horizon right into that cramped admissions room. I still remember it now: the walls were a faded green, paint peeling off here and there. Three men sat behind a desk, in green uniform, badges hanging from their chests, grinning as we all eagerly stepped up; to their right was a weighing scale, which squeaked every time a man got on it. One of the generals at the table would stand and read out the man’s weight to the other generals, who would scribble on their documents. You were reduced to nothing but a
number, a code that butchered your individuality. You were just like the rest of them: all numbers, not people. A lot of them looked far too young. You see, many lied about their age, got drafted and were left unquestioned. Stanley Barker, a young chap no more than 16 years old, who lived next door to me, rushed out of his house on admissions day and was one of the first to sign up. None of us knew what we were getting into: the resounding encouragement and propaganda was enough to sway us. I still remember leaving for France:
