The CHUCK & MARY SMITH MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP
A Legacy of Lifelong Music, Community and Support for Future Generations
A Personal Note From Ana Chuck, over the past few years, I’ve had the privilege of getting to know you, not just as a generous supporter of the College of Music, but as someone whose life has been shaped by music, community and love. It’s been a joy to hear your stories, learn about your journey as a trumpet player and jazz enthusiast, and see how deeply you care about helping students grow through music. What stands out most is how personal your connection to UNT truly is. From your time playing trumpet in the New Horizons Band with Dr. Debbie Rohwer, to your friendships with faculty like Alan Baylock and Rob Parton, to the many concerts and rehearsals you’ve attended, your presence has always been about more than just showing up. It’s about investing in the future of music and the people who carry it forward. From our conversations and what I’ve learned about Mary, it’s clear that both of you have been deeply committed to growing Denton through education, the arts and community. I hope this vision for your philanthropic impact feels like a meaningful way to honor that legacy, and that it excites you as much as it inspires us.
“Watching students benefit now gives you an idea of what your legacy looks like in perpetuity.” John W. Richmond, Ph.D. Professor of Music Education Dean
Creating a Legacy You made your first gift to the University of North Texas College of Music in 1986. Your continued support since then has been steady, generous and deeply appreciated. We are so grateful for your consistent and devoted commitment to helping students thrive in their musical journeys. You’ve expressed a desire to continue giving just as you have for many years. We’re honored to help you do that while also creating a legacy that will live on in perpetuity. We invite you to consider a dual gift structure that reflects both your ongoing support and your long-term vision. Immediate Support: A Five-Year Pledge • $2,000 annually for five years will establish The Chuck and Mary Smith Music Scholarship . • Enables you to see your impact now — supporting students as they pursue their musical goals. • Ensures your continued invitation to the Dean’s Camerata, celebrating leadership donors. • Builds the foundation for a future legacy gift through your estate. Legacy Support: A Gift Through Your Estate • A planned gift through your estate will establish The Chuck and Mary Smith Endowed Music Scholarship , ensuring your support continues in perpetuity. • Honors both you and Mary, providing annual support to future generations of music students. • Includes you in the UNT 1890 Society, recognizing individuals who have made lasting commitments through planned giving.
“Because of UNT and the generosity of scholarship donors, I’ve been able to attend this university and experience incredible opportunities. I’ve played in the One O’Clock Lab Band and performed with artists like Michael League, Billy Childs, Steve Davis, Rufus Reid. These experiences have shaped me as a musician and educator, and I’m now passing that knowledge on to my students — many of whom are excelling in all-state competitions and earning scholarships themselves. “I’m grateful to UNT and its donors for helping me become the teacher I’ve always hoped to be.” Anthony Casolari Jazz Bass Master’s Student
With Gratitude Chuck, thank you for taking the time to consider these meaningful opportunities to support the UNT College of Music. Your lifelong dedication to music, education and the Denton community is truly inspiring. It’s an honor to help shape a legacy for you and Mary — one that will not only impact future generations of music students but will also be something your children can take pride in and enjoy as a reflection of your shared values and lifelong love of music. I’m grateful for the chance to walk alongside you in this process and I look forward to continuing the conversation.
