Transformative Travel: Enriching Students and Attracting the Next Generation of Organists Malcolm Matthews, assistant professor of organ and harpsichord at the UNT College of Music, says that one of the highlights of his undergraduate study was a month-long exchange between the University of Rochester and the Hochschule für Musik Bremen. “An extended period of study is now possible with similar institutions with which we have memoranda of agreement, such as the Hochschule für Musik Würzburg,” says Matthews. “But with my connections, I would also like to lead studio trips. Listening to historic instruments is a great first step, but being on location and playing the organs in person can transform one’s playing and create indelible memories that inform one’s playing for decades to come. Even more humble trips, such as to conferences like EROI in Rochester, replete with its many varied organs in historic styles, will make a tremendous impact on UNT students.”

LAUREN SALAZAR, MEZZO-SOPRANO Graduate Artist Certificate Recipient

“The Graduate Artist Certificate program opened doors of opportunity for my professional singing career. It enabled me to travel to Europe for an up and coming summer opera program to study language, enjoy culture immersion, sing in several concerts, perform in Die Zauberflöte and meet with professionals in the industry. Additionally, I have performed several leading roles at UNT and I’ve worked vigorously with the opera coaches available to UNT musicians. It has advanced my artistry by allowing additional time for professional engagements outside of academia, including opportunities with Opera Arlington, Fort Worth Opera and the Dallas Bach Society. The GAC program in voice and opera is an incredible next step for artists who’ve finished their graduate study. I’m grateful for the lessons, coaching, contacts and artist skills I’ve gained.”
