The Big Bike rolls through P-R towns This is part of what the Big Bike Ride is all about according to AshleyManwell, Eastern Ontario regional coordinator for the Heart & Stroke Foundation.

Thursday morning was overcast and threatening rain when the family and friends of Joe Murphy showed up at the Hawkesbury Legion parking lot for the Big Bike Ride. The threat soon became rea- lity not longer after they mounted up and pedalled off as a mini-monsoon flooded the streets of town. But that did not stop theMurphy clan and their friends, making up TeamHawkesbury Toyota. Even though the drenching rain in the end forced them to turn back early and return to the Legion parking lot, they still took comfort, and pride, in the fact that they raised more than $3000 in memory of Joe Murphy, a former Toyota employee, to support the work of the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada.
While the annual Big Bike Ride inHawkes- bury and other communities throughout Ca- nada is part of the foundation’s fundraising program, the event also helps to promote heart disease awareness to the public and it gives many businesses, clubs, and other organizations a valuable tool to help unite their employees. “The real fun part of it is,” said Manwell, “that it’s a team-building activity.” The Big Bike Ride has become an annual event for either the spring or summer in the Prescott-Russell region. Mid-July saw teams pedal the Big Bike around in Rockland, Cas- selman, Vankleek Hill andHawkesbury, rai- sing money, public awareness and team spirit for the Heart & Stroke Foundation and their communities.

La coupe Stanley de passage à Saint-Pascal L’entraîneur adjoint des Pingouins de Pittsburgh, Jacques Martin, amènera la coupe Stanley dans son patelin de Saint-Pascal-Baylon, le 8 août prochain, au terrain de balle du village. Les amateurs de hockey pourront rencontrer Martin, qui a remporté une première coupe Stanley le 12 juin dernier, le couronnement de près de 20 ans de carrière derrière les bancs de la Ligue nationale de hockey. C’est en août 2013 que l’entraîneur s’est joint aux Pingouins, moins de deux ans après son congédiement par le Canadien de Montréal. En 1294 matchs, il a remporté 613 victoires et a participé aux séries éliminatoires à 12 reprises. Le 8 août, il sera tout sourire avec la coupe Stanley de 15 h à 19 h à Saint-Pascal.
