INTRODUCING JACK CANNON

In the past year, our team has provided our clients with tremendous, life-changing results. I firmly believe that we were able to achieve those results because we aggressively and meticulously prepare each case for trial. We are now entering a new phase at our firm. We are growing to meet a larger demand for our services. We are thrilled,

privileged, and grateful to announce that attorney Jack Cannon has joined our firm of counsel. Jack and I have worked together as colleagues for the past 15 years. About 10 years ago, Jack and I tried a trucking case in Will County that set the record for the largest verdict in the county’s history. The case set a national precedent for

holding logistics companies responsible for injuries caused by their agents. Jack has achieved record verdicts in numerous counties in Illinois. Throughout his career, Jack has been a zealous advocate for seriously injured workers and their families. In recognition of his great work, Jack was elected by his peers to be president of the Illinois Workers’ Compensation Lawyers Committee (WCLA) in 2017. Jack’s abilities as a trial lawyer, however, are surpassed by his qualities as a family man and person. Jack’s word is his bond. I haven’t met a lawyer who doesn’t have the highest respect for Jack Cannon. Jack truly cares about others and puts their needs before his own. Jack and his wife, Stacey, are proud parents to their three children. When he’s not in the office, Jack enjoys cooking with his wife, reading, and watching soccer matches. He is also a color commentator on ESPN for Loyola University soccer games. We are here to serve you, our clients and friends. We will constantly improve our level of service. Stay tuned for further developments.

Have a great Christmas season, everyone!

DELIVERING FOOD AND SHELTER FOR LOCAL FAMILIES:

During this holiday season, and especially New Year’s Eve, many of us will be using Uber or Lyft to get to parties, events, and family gatherings. These are just a few things to keep in mind during this busy time of year. We hope everyone has a safe Christmas and New Year’s Eve! Any time you are involved in a crash, your potential case begins immediately. In other words, the clock starts ticking. It is no different if you are a passenger in an Uber. Here are a few things to keep in mind if you’re ever injured in a crash while riding with Uber, regardless of who is at fault. 1. SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION. We always tell our clients to focus on recovering from their injuries during the entirety of their case. That advice is no different in the immediate aftermath of a crash. If you are seriously injured, call 911. Even if you are taken to the hospital straight from the crash site, an experienced attorney will be able to investigate the crash and gather all the necessary information to prosecute your case. DuPage PADS (Public Action to Deliver Shelter) has been offering hot meals and a safe place to sleep for the homeless members of the surrounding community for over 35 years. PADS also provides career services to help candidates find and retain quality jobs. Our own Ashleigh Zurek’s dad, Matt Zurek, is the St. Joan of Arc PADS Coordinator. When St. Joan of Arc hosts a PADS night, Matt needs to make sure that there are enough volunteers. Matt regularly pulls fifteen plus hour shifts to keep things running smoothly. Our team at SLG has committed to volunteering at PADS in 2020. We’d love it if you joined us. Do you want to make a difference in our community? PADS needs our help every month. To volunteer, email volunteer@dupagepads.org. Thank you for considering this opportunity to serve. DUPAGE PADS

YOUR UBER DRIVER JUST CRASHED — NOW WHAT?

2. BE CAUTIOUS WHEN REPORTING AN UBER ACCIDENT. Uber will attempt to begin their investigation immediately. They typically ask that you report the accident via the application or online. They will gather all available information from their driver and from the third party. Like any other insurance company, Uber will attempt to limit their liability as much as possible. In this case, reporting an accident too soon can work against you. It pays to be patient in these situations and seek treatment for your injuries. Many times, we have also seen that the true extent of our client’s injuries was not known immediately after the crash. 3. CONSULT WITH AN EXPERIENCED ATTORNEY. Making a claim against Uber can be confusing. They will tell you there are different coverage limits depending upon the situation. Whether you are injured as a passenger during a ride or as a pedestrian crossing the street, an experienced attorney

can help determine how much coverage may be available to you. Your attorney will take the stress of dealing with Uber and their insurance companies off your shoulders, so you can focus on healing.

APPS THAT WILL MAKE YOUR LIFE EASIER IN 2020

A couple years ago, I shared a few apps that have made my life easier. Since then, I’ve been introduced to some other great apps. I hope they will make your life easier, too. SPLITWISE For those of you familiar with my wife, Caitlin, you know she loves to travel. Whenever she travels with her friends, they use the Splitwise app to sort out all of the communal costs of the group trip. I experienced the convenience of Splitwise when Caitlin and I traveled to Europe with our friends in September. Here’s how it works: Whenever someone pays for a trip cost (dinner, rental car, Airbnb reservation, etc.), they log the cost into the app. You can select the trip members for each cost. So, if half of you go to a nice dinner and the other half go to a show, you can log the dinner costs to only be split by the dinner attendees, and likewise for the show.

At the end of the trip, when all the costs are logged, you hit the “Settle Up” button. The app then calculates who owes who what. The app also works with many payment apps and sends a request to them to settle the costs. I definitely enjoyed the ease of not having to do any calculations and not having to constantly run to the ATM to square up with cash. SUMMIT: DAILY PLANNER To be the most efficient with my time away from work, I have found that I need to outline what tasks I have to do and when I will have time to do them. Recently, the Summit app has helped me stay on track with my nonwork things that I need to get done. The app is probably best described as a hybrid to-do list and calendar. Inside the app, I can lay out all of the things I need to get done in a given week (or month). Then, I look at my work calendar and assign each task for a particular day when it looks like I have enough time to get it done. So, if I know I will

be out of town for depositions on a Monday or Tuesday, I can assign workouts or grocery shopping to other days that week. For me, it keeps me honest. Plus, the app allows me to easily reassign tasks for a different day if life gets in the way of my plans. – Pat Cummings
