Ellen’s Story

From October 2023 to August 2024, Nirmala Naresh, an associate professor in the Department of Mathematics, mentored Ellen Li, a high-school student enrolled in the math research mentorship program at UNT. Ellen’s research focused on the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in mathematics learning environments, specifically examining how AI tools influence learner engagement and mathe- matical comprehension among college students. Ellen’s journey began with completing the Institutional Review Board (IRB) training required for conducting research with human subjects, ensuring full compliance with federal regulations. She then conducted a literature review, focusing on productive learning in mathematics, AI’s role in mathematics education and outlining relevant theoretical frameworks. She then conducted a review by examining over 30 journal articles and learned to use interlibrary loan resources to access additional articles and data not available through public databases. She synthesized her findings to identify key themes and findings pertinent to the research topic. Next, Ellen used the interactive AI tool Khanmigo to solve a set of eight mathematics problems — four related to the history of mathematics and four aligned with the standard curriculum. This hands-on experience not only allowed her to gain a deeper understanding of mathematics concepts but also enhanced her ability to utilize the AI tool.
