Mr. Daniel Rose (left) shows Dr. Louis T. Talbot a book with the picture of one of the "Jesus Saves" signs. Below is Miss Annabel Ramage, donor of one of the large signs.

Mrs. Jean Thomas in the diary she has kept since she took residence in Horton Hall, September 18, 1935. This diary is sometimes referred to as BIOLA’s “Book of Knowledge” since it contains so much information that would otherwise have been forgotten. According to the “Book of Knowledge” both services of dedication created quite a stir as curious passers-by joined friends and staff members of the School and Church in front and on top of the buildings for the services. Mrs. Thomas remembers that she almost slipped from her point of vantage — the open window of her room on the tenth floor of Horton Hall. She recalls seeing people peering from office and apartment windows for blocks around, listening to the gathered congregations raise their voices to proclaim in song the same message blazing in neon from the roof tops: “We have heard” the joyful sound: Jesus Saves, Jesus Saves. Spread the tidings all around: Jesus Saves, Jesus Saves. Bear the news to every land, climb the steeps and cross the waves; Onward! — ’tis our Lord’s command; Jesus Saves, Jesus Saves.” Through the years many heartwarming stories of the effective witness of these two beacon lights of God’s grace have been told. Those who travel our airways have seen the lights as far as 75 air miles from Los Angeles and have been assured and comforted by their message, as well as guided by their beams toward their immediate airport destination. Men and women, discouraged, lonely or sad — some even contemplating suicide, have told of being drawn by the message of the neon signs to attend the services of the Church, where they have found the Christ who is able to save to the uttermost all that come unto God by Him. Miss Ramage remembers having heard the late Hebrew Christian, David Sanders, tell of being encouraged to attend his first service in the Church of the Open Door because he was curious to know the meaning of the message proclaimed by those signs. After his conversion, Mr. Sanders served the Lord for 19 years as Associate to Mr. Daniel Rose, who, since 1936, has been Director of the Jewish Dept, of the Institute and Church. Both the Church and School are grateful to the donors of these Gospel messages in neon. They join Miss Ramage and Mr. Rose in prayer, that, until the day of His appear ing, the Lord will continue to draw lost souls unto Himself by the message so eloquently summarizing the love story of the entire Bible in the two little, but all- powerful words: JESUS SAVES.

From a neighboring 13-story building, the busy area of Los Angeles can be seen. Signs are located atop the historic structure.
