wr o t e , in a letter to Ph i l Kerr: “Early in the s p r i ng of 1905 my hus band and I were sojourning kr^j in Elmira, New York. We con- \ j traded a deep friendship for a

1'h" Kerr couple by the name of Mr. and Mrs. Doolittle, — true saints of God. Mrs. Doolittle had been bedridden for nigh twenty years. Her husband was an incurable crip ple who had to propel himself to and from his business in a wheelchair. Despite their afflictions they lived happy, Christian lives, bringing in spiration and comfort to all who knew them. “One day while we were visiting with the Doolittles my husband com mented on their bright hopefulness, and asked them for the secret of it. Mrs. Doolittle’s reply was simple: ‘His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.’ The beauty of this simple expression of boundless faith gripped the hearts and fired the imagination of Dr. Martin and me. The hymn ‘His Eye Is On The Spar row’ was the outcome of that experi ence, singing itself to us that very afternoon in its complete form.” The following day she mailed the poem to Charles H. Gabriel, who wrote the music and sent it on to Charles M. Alexander in England, where it was first sung in Royal Albert Hall in the Torrey-Alexander revival services. I HEAR THY WELCOME VOICE The author, Lewis Hartsough, was a Methodist minister, editor of a num ber of Methodist hymnals. Ill health sent him to the Rocky Mountain states, where he organized rural Sun day Schools for the American Bible Society. He wrote “ I Hear Thy Wel come Voice” while conducting a re vival at Epworth, Iowa, in 1872. He was bom in Ithaca, New York, in 1828. Southern California residents and visitors are reminded of the special MUSICALES directed by Phil Kerr. Every Monday night at 7:30 P.M. in the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, and the second Sunday afternoon of each month in the^ new auditorium of the BIOLA Campus in La Mirada at 2:30 P.M. Always a rich inspiration in musical testimony.
