I w a s thoroughly discouraged one Sunday morning! I had to tell the adult Sunday school class about it.” Strangely enough, those words from a leading minister introduced what has become one of the West Coast’s most successful evangelical television programs, “The Voice of Calvary.” This interesting statement was made by Dr. John (Jack) F. Mac Arthur, pastor of the Harry Mac Arthur Memorial Church of Burbank, California. “ I told the people that Sunday morning back in 1956,” Dr. MacAr thur related further, “ that of all reli gious television programs on the air there was not a single truly evangel ical one. I went on to say, not expect ing anyone to take me up on it, that if I had enough financial backing to be on the air for one month, I’d tackle it.” It was at the close of the service that a gracious lady, with a twinkle in her eye, came to Dr. Mac- Arthur with a challenge that couldn’t be overlooked. “You take that month, Dr. Jack,” she exhorted. “ I’ll lend the ‘Voice of Calvary’ the money.” A few short weeks later, November 25, 1956, the program was on the air in Los An geles. “The only time open was ten o’clock Sunday evening, an hour when most people are seeking entertainment.” Dr. MacArthur explained, “ I thought that we had to be ‘special,’ but the Lord clearly showed us that we should be evangelistic rather than ‘special.’ During this time, we have endeavored to reach the multitudes of people who would never darken the door of a church; those outside the realm of the Gospel’s reach.” The Lord has won derfully blessed the simple humble efforts which have been put forth; a lasting spiritual ministry has been imparted. A large number of letters clearly indicate that souls have re ceived Jesus Christ as Saviour through this medium. Today “The Voice of Calvary” is on five television stations in key areas of
