Books ArePortable Magic Remember being read to as a child? M y mother read aloud to me, and one of my favorite books was Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White. But what I remember most was the sound of her voice, the rhythm of the words and what it felt like leaning into her, while she read aloud to me. The pages of those books she read transported us to faraway places—real and imaginary—and taught me about life and oPened my mitnd to all the possibilities. So when I became a mother, I began reading to my kids. And now I’m reading to my grandchildren every chance I get. As for my mom, now a great-grandmother, she still takes great joy in reading to the kids whenever she visits. Remember to take time every chance you get—eat, play, read. Reading helps build language and thinking skills, develops a child’s imagination and empathy for others, achieve better in school, and it’s a great way to spend time together. And best of all, reading aloud to your child makes memories that will stay with you for a lifetime. That’s what my mother was doing years ago when she took the time to read aloud to me.

CELEBRATING THE HALL OF FAME OF NORTH BAY BUSINESS
Best of the North Bay Hall of Fame 2025
“i t was a pretty darned good feeling,” baseball legend Cal Ripken said, in typical understatement, about his 2007 induction into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame. For inductees into our Best of the North Bay Hall of Fame, we like to think “pretty darned good” is merely a starting point. These are the local businesses that have earned first or second-place awards in our annual readers’ poll more than 15 times (since we began an official count in 2002). These companies have so consistently been acknowledged for outstanding service by our readers, we feel they deserve special recognition. We launched the Hall of Fame during our 2024 contest. It being our first induction year, there was an expected backlog of honorees—15 of them, in fact—who had topped 15 wins throughout the years. In fact, Redwood Credit Union, John Ash & Co. and Exchange Bank have all racked up more than 30 awards—we may one day need a Hall of Fame for the Hall of Fame, but we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it. This year the induction list is more right-size (as they say in the corporate world), with two deserving honorees: Pisenti & Brinker accounting firm and Balletto Vineyards winery crossing the threshold of 15 wins. Winning consistently is difficult and rare—achieved by only the best in their respective fields. Richard Petty won 200 races in the NASCAR Cup Series. Tennis great Novak Djokovic
has won 24 Grand Slam singles titles. Sam Snead and Tiger Woods are tied for the most PGA Tour wins at 82. Winning once or twice is highly commendable. Winning 82 times is truly remarkable. So congratulations to Balletto Vineyards and Pisenti & Brinker—you join a special rank of North Bay companies that have earned customers’ and clients’ long-term trust and loyalty. Hall of Fame status remains active for two Best of the North Bay contests—during which time inductees are elevated from the category in which they’ve won the most awards (but are still eligible in other categories) and honored in the Hall of Fame pages of our Best of the North Bay issue [see pages 12 to 16]. After two years, HOF honorees return to regular competition. Walt Disney, who knew a thing or two about nurturing a long-lasting business, summed up his philosophy by saying, “Whatever you do, do it well.” “Do it so well that when people see you do it, they will want to come back and see you do it again,” he continued. “And they will want to bring others and show them how well you do what you do.” More than anything, our Hall of Fame businesses encapsulate the very essence of Disney’s wisdom. They do what they do well—so well, it can’t be ignored. Not by the Best of the North Bay awards, anyway. Time and time and time again. — Jason Walsh, editor

HALL OF FAME ACCOUNTING FIRM
P ISENTI & BRINKER LLP “One of our most valuable assets is our people.” —Joshua Moore
By Jason Walsh M aintaining a “local firm feel” while expanding one’s client base can be a Bay. In fact, the accounting firm surpassed 15 awards in NBb’s readers’ poll—and is one of our 2025 inductees into the contest Hall of Fame. P&B has operated for the past 60 years on the premise that clients trust them to deliver the highest level of service in a careful, confident and professional manner. “We have a thriving business community, so we want to provide value-add services that meet their needs—for the business as well as the owners,” says firm partner Joshua Moore. “We align with like-minded companies that we can partner with to meet the growing demands of our clients.” Employee retention is a priority at the firm, as it challenge—but Pisenti & Brinker LLP has managed to do just that throughout its many years of honors in Best of the North emphasizes a sustainable work force that is highly trained, leans into new technologies and stays with the company for the long haul. “Planned burn out and attrition due to over-work is not what we want,” says Moore. “We pay close attention to changes in our industry to stay relevant to a modern workforce to ensure we can continue to deliver high quality deliverables for our clients.” Fostering a thriving workforce takes time and attention. “While we take our work very seriously, we also find ways to celebrate success,” Moore says. “We celebrate as a team multiple times a year, so the owners can express their gratitude for the tireless and dedicated work of the staff. One of our most valuable assets is our people.” Never a firm to rest on its laurels, Moore says exciting changes are always on the horizon. “We want to continue to support the strength of our firm that has been built on trusting relationships,” he stresses. “We are looking to join forces with other like-minded firms to enhance valuable resources offered to clients.” With more than 15 first- or second-place honors in the Best of the North Bay contest, Pisenti & Brinker enters our Hall of Fame as a clear reader favorite. Moore says the company was honored to receive the recognition. “It’s

a reflection of the commitment we have to our community, our staff, our businesses and their owners,” he says. v

B ALLETTO VINEYARDS “Many of our employees have been with us for over 30 years and some overe 40.” —John Balletto
By Rosie Padilla T here are few business owners who can say they founded their company at age 17. However, John Balletto can. Upon his father’s untimely death, he pushed his needs aside and stepped up for his family. In 1977, he and his mother Hazel established Balletto Ranch, where they planted vegetables on their 5-acre farm. Over time, the Balletto family continued expanding the farm to plant more and more vegetables. According to the winery’s website, by 1994 the ranch had grown to be the largest vegetable farm in Northern California. Due to the growing water shortage at the time, the family decided to switch gears from vegetables to grapes, which turned out to be a blessing in disguise—as we now have the scenic estate and winery that is Balletto Vineyards.

induction this year into our contest Hall of Fame in the Pinot Noir category. “We have more than 20 different vineyards on over 850 acres that we get fruit from, and we are able to pick the blocks that we want for our Balletto label,” says John. “We only use 10% for us and sell the balance to over 40 wineries.” Balletto Vineyards continues to expand and stay creative with each coming year to ensure quality wine and entertainment for locals and tourists alike. John says the winery will be adding a new varietal in 2026, a riesling. In addition to producing the new varietal, Balletto Vineyards is opening a hospitality center to facilitate more events and garner even more visitors to both the winery and, hopefully, Sonoma County as a whole. Beyond valuing their customers, John and Terri make sure their team is taken care of—after all, its employees have helped make Balletto what it is today. “We provide housing for over 75% of our employees and we have a 96% retention rate,” says John. “Many of our employees have been with us [for] over 30 years and some over 40.” Balletto Vineyards continues to strive for greatness, starting with team support and ending with a delicious glass of your favorite varietal. “Sonoma County is one of the top 10 areas in the world to grow world class grapes and make spectacular wine,” John says. “To be in the Hall of Fame is just a tremendous honor.” v
After the vegetable farming land was converted to vineyards, John and his wife Terri began selling their grapes to local wine producers. Eventually the Ballettos decided to utilize the fruits of their labor and began the journey into winemaking. Balletto Vineyards is now one of the few wineries in the Russian River Valley that is estate grown and bottled, according to John. Over the years, Balletto Vineyards has tallied more than 15 wins in NBb’s Best of the North Bay readers’ poll, earning

BEST OF THE NORTH BAY HALL OF FAME PAST INDUCTEES
Hall of Famers
T he Best of the North Bay Hall of Fame is an exclusive club of contest award recipients who have been honored more than 15 times in the years since we began keeping official track in 2002. Our 2025 inductees—Balletto Vineyards and Pisenti & Brinker accountants—crossed the threshold into the hallowed hall this year. Last year, we celebrated our inaugural HOF induction class. Due to 2024 being the debut of a new level of veneration in the contest, there was an ample backlog of qualifying businesses for the hall—15, in fact. Some of those contest success stories have far-surpassed the more-than 15 awards needed for entrance, tallying upward of 30, even 40 awards over the years (looking at you, Redwood Credit Union). As per our Hall of Fame guidelines, member businesses are inducted in the category in which they’ve won most often—and elevated from competition in that category for two contest years. Here’s a look at last year’s inaugural Hall of Fame inductees. Congratulations to these reader-favorite businesses on their second year in the hall—and good luck in next year’s regular contest. CELEBRATING THE BEST OF NORTH BAY BUSINESS
OUR 36 TH ANNUAL READERS’ POLL
“I want the best of both worlds,” Van Halen famously declared in the band’s hit from 1986. Well, if Sammy and the boys were voting in our 2025 Best of the North Bay contest—and don’t think the Red Rocker hasn’t, he’s got longtime Marin connections—they’d be pining for the best of 58 worlds. That’s how many business categories we’re celebrating this year. It’s a banner year for our 36th annual contest. As the magazine enters its 50th year in publication—we launched as Sonoma Business in 1975—we’re upping our Best of the North Bay game. This year, we’ve added a whopping 22 new categories to the readers’ poll—a chance to venerate several trades providing staple services in the region. Think plumbing, HVAC, flooring, etc. We’ve also added a couple of restaurant categories, a chance to vote for “best place to work” and more.
There are so many various economy-driving businesses in the area, expanding our award footprint makes for a more fun contest. It’s also a more helpful contest for readers deciding where to spend their money—all things being equal, the endorsement of thousands of your neighbors can be a dealbreaker. The following pages tally this year’s winners, with short writeups on all the 2025 honorees and slightly longer pieces dedicated to businesses who’ve earned multiple awards (at least one being a first-place finish) this year. This year’s contest received 1,700 ballots, with more than 50,000 individual votes cast—an all time high. Congratulations to this year’s winners! And don’t forget: Voting for next year’s contest will begin in January. It’s never too early to get the campaign going. —Jason Walsh, editor

BEST SPARKLING
I RON HORSE VINEYARDS
T he crisp, coastal, cool climate that lingers through the western edge of Sonoma County conveniently helps many wineries alongside the Russian River Valley. The microclimate that makes its way into Sebastopol plays a central role in assisting one winery’s production of the various sparkling wines for which it’s known. Iron Horse Vineyards was founded in 1976 by Barry and Audrey Sterling. Originally from California, they had moved their family to France in 1967. According to daughter Joy Sterling, partner and CEO at Iron Horse, it was while living in France that her parents were introduced to the world of wine and its pleasures. Having been inspired by that experience, the Sterlings began looking for a vineyard in France. However, instead, they returned to California and stumbled upon a property called Iron Horse. And the rest is history. This year Iron Horse Vineyards has been honored as Best Sparkling Wine in NorthBay biz’s 2025 readers’ poll. “[We’re] elated and deeply appreciative!” says Sterling. She believes consumers find their sparkling wines appealing because they’re delicious, fun—and because they’re the drink of optimists. As for the future, Iron Horse Vineyards has lots to celebrate. In 2026, By Jessie De La O
Sterling says the winery is marking several milestones: the winery celebrates its 50th anniversary; it’s the 30th work anniversary of winemaker David Munksgard; and Sterling’s mother, Audrey, celebrates her 95th birthday. “We’ve got every reason to celebrate! It’s exciting!” v

BEST CHARDONNAY AND BEST ROSÉ
M ACROSTIE WINERY & VINEYARDS
By Summer Young
I t is often said that great wine is made in the vineyards. “A vineyard with unique geographic and climatic influences is key,” says Heidi Bridenhagen, winemaker at MacRostie Winery & Vineyards. “It creates a specific expression and unique aromas and flavors. The next step for me is [to make] a clean and focused wine. I want to showcase what the vineyard site and growers have spent the whole season and sometimes a lifetime cultivating.” MacRostie Winery & Vineyards focuses on creating cool- climate pinot noir and chardonnay wines. For the last three decades, owner Steve MacRostie has forged trusted partnerships with the region’s finest growers, including more than 30 chardonnay vineyards and 15 pinot noir sites. Combined with MacRostie’s own vineyards, this provides access to a remarkable level of diversity. Macrostie makes several chardonnay wines, but the most popular remains its flagship Sonoma Coast Chardonnay. This wine has been produced since the winery’s founding in 1987 and is distributed throughout the United States and Canada. The wine

the grapes picked for the saignée portion are fruitier, richer and darker in color. The blending of these two techniques creates a beautiful pale pink rosé of pinot noir with fruity fresh strawberry and watermelon aromas and a crisp, bright refreshing palate. The careful consideration that goes into each wine has earned MacRostie the title of not only Best Chardonnay but also Best Rosé in this year’s readers’ poll. Beyond its first-place finishes, the winery has earned two second-place Gold awards, one in the Tasting Room category and head winemaker Heidi Bridenhagen received one in the Winemaker category. These two wines and many more can be enjoyed at the renowned MacRostie Winery Estate House in Healdsburg. Since opening a decade ago, the Estate House has earned acclaim as one of the most unforgettable wine destinations in Sonoma County and a benchmark for wine country hospitality. Located off Westside Road, the winery sits on a hill surrounded by picturesque views of MacRostie’s Thales vineyard. The Estate House offers a variety of indoor and outdoor seating options, all with idyllic views of the property. There, guests receive a personalized tasting based on what type of wines they most enjoy. Though every bottle is different, each captures a unique expression of time and place in the vineyard. v

Bridenhagen says that color is the most distinctive quality of a rosé, so she spends a considerable amount of time during harvest ensuring she gives the juice just the right amount. The rosé is produced with 50% direct-to-press method and 50% saignée method. The direct-to-press grapes are picked at a lower sugar and higher acid, while

BEST PINOT NOIR
M CCARTER CELLARS
By Ismael Ramos
W hen one thinks of the North Bay, what often comes to mind is: Wine Country Destination. In an area known worldwide for its variety of wines and vineyards, it can be challenging to stand out among the competition. Yet, McCarter Cellars has been able to do just that. This year McCarter Cellars earned the title of Best Pinot Noir in the 2025 Best of the North Bay readers’ poll, and tacked on a second-place Gold award for its rose. Founder and winemaker Dennis McCarter believes several factors contributed to the winery’s readers’ poll success. “The amount of time I’ve been making wine, the amount of awards garnered, community involvement and diversity in industry,” tallies McCarter. “We strive for premium level wines using different oak treatments and are willing to experiment with varietals.” Adds McCarter: “Like the music I play, I put some soul into the cellar.” McCarter started making wine as a hobby in his garage in 2017. This passive interest rapidly became an obsession that hasn’t stopped—even after becoming a pro winemaker
Dennis McCarter has parlayed his winemaking hobby into an award-winning career.
in 2022. In McCarter Cellars’ first three years of official production, it has collected numerous awards for its world class wines. According to the winery’s website, it has always been Dennis McCarter’s dream to produce extraordinary wines from Sonoma County. “Thanks to the depth and flavor of locally grown Sonoma County grapes, our winery now specializes in the production of ultra-premium wines that showcase the remarkable quality of the region.” The legacy of Sonoma County can be found in the McCarter Cellar wines—especially in its pinot noir. Pinot noir has been around since the 14th century—so what could McCarter Cellars possibly be doing to make its pinot so unique and innovative? “[We] experiment with different varietals and different oaks, different methods, whole clusters of oaks to add layers of texture and blend,” says McCarter. “Winemaking is largely the same today as it was 1,000 years ago. Each winemaker puts a part of themself into their wine and that is where the creativity in winemaking lives.” With hints of cotton candy, pomegranate, raspberry and a delicate
touch of baking spice, this award-winning pinot noir is perfect for all levels of wine enthusiast, and a great introduction to McCarter Cellars and what it has to offer. This year McCarter Cellars has won two first place awards in the Best of the North Bay readers’ poll. The winery earned the title of Best Pinot Noir and Dennis McCarter secured the title of Best Winemaker. [See p. 27] McCarter believes people would be surprised to learn his winery is one of the few black-owned wineries in the United States. “Out of 10,000 wineries in the U.S. less than 1% are black owned. But that is not the reason I got into the industry. I have a passion for wine and the industry that drew me in.” Though it might not be the reason he got into the industry, he doesn’t shy away from using his platform to help bridge connections between communities. BEST CABERNET SAUVIGNON
S ERRES RANCH
By Janet Perry
I t’s no surprise to see the award for Best Cabernet Sauvignon go to Serres Ranch. The Serres family has been farming their land in the Valley of the Moon for a century. Its microclimate provides Serres Ranch with the perfect terroir for growing world-class grapes for red wines. The family works with the land to grow varietals that love the unique warm climate created by geothermal activity under the ranch. They believe in responsible stewardship and protecting the land for future generations. Serres Ranch was certified sustainable in 2015, and the family’s farming practices help bring vitality to the land, its habitats and ecosystems. They also strive to be good community members and understand the importance of supporting other local businesses. Family member Taylor Serres Murnig, wine company director, says they are grateful and honored to be chosen as the Best Cabernet Sauvignon in Sonoma County. “As a fifth-generation farmer in Sonoma County, being recognized for our hard work and dedication to our land and vines means more than you know,” she says. “Producing sustainably farmed grapes and wine allow for our family to provide the most wholesome product

BEST ZINFANDEL
By Rosie Padilla W ILSON WINERY
“Z infandel gained world-renown largely thanks to the Dry Creek Valley, and Wilson [Winery] strives to honor the character and nuance of the varietal across every vintage,” says the winery’s DTC Sales Manager Shane Tracy. Wilson Winery’s zinfandel dominated NBb’s readers’ poll this year and earned the winery a first-place award. The vineyard was founded in 1993 and has continued to expand along with the Dry Creek Valley region, but the team continually aims to provide the hospitality and care of a smaller winery. Tracy says that pouring their award-winning wines with warmth and friendliness is a must—because, after all, they are serving the community they have grown with. “[It] is the foundation of what we do,” says Tracy. Winemaker Diane Wilson and cellarmaster Juan Medrano work with new techniques to ensure quality wines that maintain the heart and integrity of the varietal. Along with cultivating award-winning wines, Wilson Winery also develops Wilson Artisan events where guests can explore the whole family of wineries—there are 11 in total. “Beyond the wines themselves, we feel strongly that our goal is to be the place people want to visit. There’s no shortage of great

BEST WINEMAKER
By Ismael Ramos D ENNIS MCCARTER, MCCARTER CELLARS
B eing voted Best Winemaker by readers and residents of “wine country” must be an unbelievable feeling— and it certainly seems that way for Dennis McCarter. “For the amount of time I’ve been doing this, it is surreal to be voted Best Winemaker,” he says. “I am glad my mom is alive to see it. A dream that started in a garage making home wine 15 years ago has led me to the path I am on today.” Founding McCarter Cellars in 2022, he attributes his love for wine from a food-and-wine pairing course he took at Santa Rosa Junior College. “Wine elevates food, food elevates wine. Wine brings people together,” says McCarter. With so many talented winemakers in Sonoma County, it’s not easy setting yourself apart. For McCarter, the key is both complicated yet simple—produce wine from the soul. “I put my soul into it. I taste my wines at least monthly through the process. Keep wines topped to prevent oxidation, check lab values and make adjustments as necessary. I taste it through all phases of fermentation and aging,” he says. It’s this attention to detail that has garnered McCarter

numerous awards and accolades. Just like a fine wine, our Best Winemaker, Dennis McCarter, gets better with age. v

BEST LOCAL BREWERY/SPRIRITS
R USSIAN RIVER BREWING COMPANY
By Alex Russell
Y ou may be surprised to learn that Russian River Brewing Company, a stalwart of local producers, actually started as part of the wine industry. “Russian River Brewing Company was founded by Korbel Winery in 1997,” says Natalie Cilurzo, who today co-owns the brand with her husband and brewmaster Vinnie Cilurzo. “We assumed ownership of the brand, all recipes that my husband created while working there, and opened our brewpub in downtown Santa Rosa on April 3, 2004.” A second location, in Windsor, opened in 2018. The company is perhaps best known for Pliny the Younger, an annual release that draws aficionados from across the globe. “Visitors make the pilgrimage from all over the world to both our brewpubs each year during the two-week release,” says Cilurzo. “Last year, our 20th annual release contributed $8.6 million to the local economy.” It’s also often recognized for its hoppy IPAs and sour barrel-aged beers. Cilurzo continues, “Pliny the Younger is a seasonal favorite, but Pliny the Elder, Blind Pig IPA and STS Pils are some of the most popular flagship beers.” Going forward, Cilurzo says the company (which employs about 180 people) will “remain focused on using the highest quality ingredients, reinvesting in our business, providing great customer service and taking care of our team.”

Final thoughts? “I love the community in which we live and work,” she says. “I also love the beer industry and the many friends we have made over the years. … And thank you for voting us Best Brewery in this year’s readers’ poll!”. v

BEST TASTING ROOM
BEST TASTING ROOM P ARADISE RIDGE WINERY
By Rosie Padilla
P aradise Ridge Winery is a returning winner to the Tasting Room category in NBb’s annual readers’ poll, and the proof is in the view. Located on the hills of the Fountaingrove neighborhood of Santa Rosa, the winery is positioned to give customers a breathtaking view of the Russian River Valley. The winery manages to maintain an exclusive ambiance by selling wine direct to consumers. Proprietor Rene Byck told NBb that Paradise Ridge only makes about 2,500 cases of wine a year, produced from the estate vineyard. After the 2017 wildfires, the team
at Paradise Ridge decided to prioritize sustainability and utilize regenerative farming. This has been integrated into the business in myriad ways—only using natural herbicides and pesticides, the re- introduction of sheep to the property, and the implementation of biochar to encourage biodiversity, among other initiatives. General Manager Casandra Karkos Klein says innovation continues to be a priority for the winery and it doesn’t end at sustainable farming. “We are also working on new ways of making the tasting room more inclusive and distinctive—creating memorable experiences and drink options for everyone, not just wine enthusiasts,” says Klein. The incredible views are not the only appeal. The property is also

adorned with various immersive sculpture exhibitions that pay homage to the local community—both permanent installations and rotating exhibits. Paradise Ridge Winery strives to blend nature, wine and art to create a unique wine-country experience. In honor of Byck’s parents there will be a new sculpture show called “Return to Paradise” making its debut June 15. “We have a historical exhibit about the first Japanese winemaker in the world, Kanaye Nagasawa. He settled here in Fountaingrove and became known as the Grape King of California,” says Byck. As Paradise Ridge looks to the future, Byck shares a couple of upcoming releases, including the first ever oaked sauvignon blanc and stainless-steel chardonnay. Several short-term vacation rentals, known as farm stays, have been added to the property so visitors can stay on a working ranch/vineyard. When asked about her initial reaction to winning Best Tasting Room (plus second place Gold awards for zin and chardonnay), Klein says she felt gratitude. “To do what we do every day, with continued passion and commitment to community, it’s an honor to be recognized for what we do and create.” Adds Byck: “We [are] super excited and proud to have the readers vote us Best Tasting Room. [It] was recognition of all the hard work we have put in after the fires and COVID.” v

BEST BAKERY
S ARMENTINE
By Alex Russell
F rench-born Alexandra Zandvliet discovered the art of breadmaking after a 2012 move to California left her yearning for the flavors of home. “Armed with cherished memories of perfect baguettes, I began my journey in September 2013, gradually inching closer to recreating that iconic French flavor,” she writes at sarmentine.com . Sarmentine began as a cottage kitchen in 2016, and the first brick- and-mortar bakery opened in August 2021 in Santa Rosa. Today, you can find Sarmentine in Santa Rosa, Petaluma and Sebastopol. “We specialize in handcrafted, traditionally made French bread, pastries and viennoiseries,” says Zandvliet. “This includes naturally leavened baguettes and bread loaves (with our French sourdough), buttery croissants and delicious pastries all made with local organic ingredients.” This dedication to wholesomeness has earned the bakery a “snail of approval” from Slow Food USA. It’s a recognition given to food and beverage establishments based on evaluations focused on the following six areas: sourcing, environmental impact, cultural connection, community involvement, staff support and business values. Zandvliet, who is both baker and COO, has been joined on this journey by her husband, Louis (CEO), and partner Manon Servouse (CMO). “Alexandra loves the craftsmanship behind true artisan baking— working with her hands, transforming simple, high-quality ingredients into something that brings people joy,” says Servouse. “I also love the
