F rench-born Alexandra Zandvliet discovered the art of breadmaking after a 2012 move to California left her yearning for the flavors of home. “Armed with cherished memories of perfect baguettes, I began my journey in September 2013, gradually inching closer to recreating that iconic French flavor,” she writes at sarmentine.com . Sarmentine began as a cottage kitchen in 2016, and the first brick- and-mortar bakery opened in August 2021 in Santa Rosa. Today, you can find Sarmentine in Santa Rosa, Petaluma and Sebastopol. “We specialize in handcrafted, traditionally made French bread, pastries and viennoiseries,” says Zandvliet. “This includes naturally leavened baguettes and bread loaves (with our French sourdough), buttery croissants and delicious pastries all made with local organic ingredients.” This dedication to wholesomeness has earned the bakery a “snail of approval” from Slow Food USA. It’s a recognition given to food and beverage establishments based on evaluations focused on the following six areas: sourcing, environmental impact, cultural connection, community involvement, staff support and business values.
