Dear Friends, On behalf of City of Irvine Senior Services, we wish you a happy and healthy new year! This year, I encourage you to set a New Years resolution you won't regret, giving back to the community. Irvine Senior Services offers a variety of volunteer opportuni- ties to match your interests, skills, and availability. Are you interested in helping ensure older adults receive a nutritious meal each day? Consider becoming a Rose Garden Café or Meals on Wheels volunteer. Do you want a flexible schedule? Volunteer drivers help drive older adults to non-emergency medical appoint- ments and can accept or decline assignments based on your availability. For more information contact volunteer@cityofirvine.org . Mark your calendars for 9 a.m. the third Thursday, each month to watch the Senior Citizen Council meeting. The meeting is now being broadcasted through ICTV and you can watch it live at home or come in person at 1 Civic Center Plaza in the Council Chambers. Other upcoming events include the Chinese New Year Celebration Wednesday, February 7, followed by Nowruz on Thursday, March 21. Both events feature entertainment and refreshments, while celebrating the new year. See page four of this issue of the Irvine Senior Connection for more information. I hope you have a fulfilling new year while enjoying the exciting events and programs Irvine Senior Services has to offer. For more information, visit one of our three senior centers or go to irvineseniors.org . Sincerely yours, Sandra L. Salcedo Community Services Manager

Hit the Reset Button
It's never too late to support healthy aging.
It is never too late to make improvements to help support healthy aging and Irvine Senior Services can help. Whether you are interested in enjoying a balanced lunch in the Rose Garden Café (see Page 29), attending an educational lecture to stay up to date on relevant topics (see Page 11), or trying a new fitness class to help you stay active (see Page 15), there are programs and services to meet your needs. For more information, visit irvineseniors.org or call 949-724-6900.
A new year means new beginnings. It's a chance to reflect, hit the reset button, and set goals to help you lead a healthier and happier life. Some may resolve to drink more water, while others may hope to give back to the community or spend more time with family. Another common resolution is to eat healthier. Good nutrition can help boost energy, con- trol weight, and prevent chronic diseases. The National Council on Aging provides these tips for picking healthy foods as you get older: • Know what a healthy plate looks like. The USDA implemented a simple way to help people see what a healthy plate looks like. My Plate shows you how much lean protein, fruit, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat dairy should be eaten with every meal. Learn more at ChooseMyPlate.gov . • Read the Nutrition Facts label. The healthiest foods are whole foods. When you do eat packaged foods, read the labels to find items lower in fat, added sugars, and sodium. • Use recommended servings. To maintain your weight, you must eat the right amount of food for your age and body. Talk to a healthcare provider to determine your proper daily nutritional needs. • Stay hydrated. Water is an important nutrient, too. Drink small amounts of fluids consistently throughout the day. Tea, coffee, and water are your best choices.
Find out more about Nutrition Services available to you. See Page 29.
