A Name of Two Halves
Some companies begin life with one name and then change to another. In this article, we will be looking at three of my favourite examples.
DIMENSION SIX (NIKE)
Nike is number three on the list for its old name,‘Blue Ribbon Sports’. Now, back in 1964, when the company went by this name, the founder, Phil Knight, was going on an around-the-world trip. Knight came across a statue of Nike, the Greek goddess, during his travels. The statue’s culture inspired Knight, so when there was a discussion about changing the brand’s name back home, he suggested the name Nike! This was not a favourite but was agreed to be better than the other option, Dimension Six. By 1971, Nike was adopted along with the iconic logo, leaving Blue Ribbon Sports and Dimension Six in the dust.
Nike has recently issued some limited edition shoes featuring the original branding, including the Falcon and Dimension Six designs
