Celebrating Co-operation: A Greener Future Together

Scotmid joins forces with fellow co-ops to secure a 10-year green energy deal.

"We’re proud to join forces with Central Co-op, Lincolnshire Co-op, East of England Co-op, and Southern Co-op through this innovative Corporate Power Purchase Agreement. This collaboration strengthens our commitment to sustainability and ensures reliable, clean energy for our members and communities. By working together, we’re cutting our carbon footprint and helping the UK reach net-zero. This agreement showcases how co-operation and collective action can create real change for a sustainable future." - Craig Strachan, Scotmid Chief Financial Officer.

Karen Scott, Chief Executive

"2025 marks a global celebration of the strength of co-operation. Across this edition, you’ll see how that spirit lives in everything we do." Karen Scott

It’s a pleasure to welcome you to this new digital chapter of Jigsaw Magazine. As Society President, I often reflect on the journey we’ve taken together—how Scotmid has grown, adapted, and remained true to our co-operative principles. That feels especially relevant as we mark the International Year of Co-operatives 2025. This year is a celebration of how people can power lasting change. That’s something I see every day in our members, colleagues and customers—those who give their time to volunteering, support local initiatives, and keep co-operation at the heart of our communities. This magazine is a snapshot of those values in action. It’s also a reminder that our strength lies not just in what we do, but in how we do it— together in co-operation. It’s clear that when people come together, great things happen. Thank you for your continued support and for helping Scotmid stay rooted in purpose. Best wishes, Eddie

Moving to a digital format is a meaningful step for our Society—helping us reduce waste, improve accessibility, and stay connected in ways that reflect our co-operative values. This change comes at a particularly fitting moment, as 2025 marks the International Year of Co-operatives—a global celebration of the power of working together. Throughout this edition, you’ll see how that spirit of co-operation continues to guide and strengthen everything we do. That spirit has been especially evident in recent weeks, as we responded to the challenges caused by the Coop Group cyber attack and its knock-on effect on stock availability in our stores. I want to acknowledge any concern this may have caused and sincerely thank you for your continued support during this difficult time. While our systems were not compromised, the incident had a significant impact on our supply chain and trading. I’m pleased to report that our operations are now returning to normal.

Special mention must be made of our central and store colleagues for their resilience, hard work, and commitment during this challenging period. I’d also like to express my heartfelt thanks to our members and customers for your patience, understanding, and loyalty throughout. Thank you, Karen STAY CONNECTED for a chance to win £100* IMPORTANT NEWS - Our Money-Off Vouchers are going digital soon. Make sure you provide us with an email address to ensure you don't miss out! The International Year of Co-operatives civic reception at the Scottish Parliament, sponsored by Paul Sweeney MSP, was an inspiring celebration of the vital role co- operatives play in building stronger, fairer communities and more sustainable local economies across Scotland. Paul delivered a powerful message highlighting the essential contribution of co-operatives to Scotland’s future. Our CEO, Karen, and President, Eddie, shared Scotmid’s story and reaffirmed our commitment to making a meaningful impact through co-operative values. Rose Marley, CEO of Co-operatives UK, reminded attendees that IYC2025 is a global call to action—an opportunity to champion co-operative principles and drive lasting change. We are proud to be part of this movement and remain committed to supporting communities across Scotland as we look ahead to the International Year of Co-operatives and beyond.

eople-centred business

What exactly is a co-operative, and why does it deserve a whole year of recognition? A co-operative (or “co-op”) is a business owned and run by its members. These members might be customers, employees, local residents or a combination of groups. Everyone has an equal say in how the organisation is run and how profits are used. Unlike traditional businesses that put shareholder profit first, co-operatives exist to meet the needs of their members and reinvest in their communities. This people-first model is based on values such as: Democracy, Equality, Sustainability, and Community support.

Why 2025? Co-operatives are everywhere—from food stores and farms to housing, health care, and energy services. Globally, there are over 3 million co-ops supporting more than one billion people. The United Nations and global co-operative networks are using 2025 to highlight their vital role in addressing social and environmental challenges—from climate change to cost-of-living pressures. The theme for this year is about showing how co-ops are “Building a better future for all” by putting people, not profit, at the heart of business.

AGM 2025

Hundreds of members came together for the Society’s Annual General Meetings, which were held across three venues in Edinburgh, Larkhall and Inverness. Members were provided with updates on the financial performance of the Society, upcoming developments, and the great work being done to support our local communities. Members also received presentations from each of the Community Connect groups hoping to secure funding. There were 12 places available on the Society’s Regional Committees and 12 members had been nominated for those places, so the elections were uncontested. Details of those members elected can be found in the table opposite.

What happens at a Scotmid General Meeting? Scotmid holds Annual General Meetings (AGM) across Scotland. They are open to all members of the Society.

These meetings provide members with important updates on our financial performance, strategic developments, and community initiatives. They are also a chance to take part in our democratic process — by asking questions, voting on key issues, and helping to decide how funding is allocated to local causes. AGMs are a great opportunity to connect with fellow members, meet your elected representatives, engage with Scotmid colleagues, and hear directly from community groups and charity partners. The International Year of Co-operatives is the perfect time to reflect on the power of people working together for the common good. At the heart of every co-operative is a simple idea: we’re stronger together. That idea doesn’t just live in boardrooms or balance sheets—it lives in local parks, food banks, schools, care homes, and on our doorsteps. Whether it’s the neighbour who always checks in on others, the volunteer who gives up their weekend to run youth clubs, or the local campaigner working to create positive change— these are the heroes who embody co-operative values in everyday life.

We want to shine a light on heroes in our own communities. Do you know someone who: • M akes a difference through volunteering? • H as helped bring people together during tough times? • G oes above and beyond for their community? If so, we want to hear from you.

Tell us about your Community Hero Submit a short story (it could be just a paragraph or two) about someone you admire in your community—why they inspire you, and how they reflect the spirit of co-operation. Email us at: membership@scotmid.com Selected stories may be featured in our publications, social media or in stores. Together, we can celebrate the real people making our communities better places to live. Let’s show that co-operative values aren’t just principles—they’re people.

Scotmid at No. 10 Scotmid President Eddie Thorn joined co-operative and mutual leaders at a reception at 10 Downing Street on 9 June, where ministers reaffirmed their commitment to doubling the size of the UK’s co-operative and mutual sector. Hosted by Secretary of State for Business and Trade Jonathan Reynolds, Minister for Small Business Gareth Thomas, and Economic Secretary to the Treasury Emma Reynolds, the event brought together representatives from across the sector. The reception underscored a renewed government focus on supporting growth, innovation and investment in the social economy. A new Call for Evidence on Co-operatives and Mutuals was launched to help shape future policy and unlock the sector’s potential.

A new Business Growth Service was also announced, aimed at supporting organisations to start, scale or convert to co-operative models. While financial mutuals are not within the scope of the Call for Evidence, ministers acknowledged their value and confirmed that broader support is being explored. The announcement comes during the UN-designated International Year of the Co-operative, adding momentum to sector-wide advocacy and reform.

Double Win at the Sammies At the prestigious Sandwich & Food-to-go Industry Awards—known as The Sammies—Scotmid was honoured with a double award performance: • Convenience Retailer Award, recognising the excellence of our food-to-go offerings. • Business & Product Innovation Award, spotlighting our deployment of Symphony AI for smarter food-planning strategies.

Brian Boyle, Scotmid's Chief Operating Officer for Retail, commented: “Winning not one but two Sammies is a fantastic endorsement of the work our teams are doing… Food-to-go remains a key focus and growth area for us.”

Crime Prevention Retailer of the Year Our Leven Street store in Edinburgh was recognised as the Crime Prevention Retailer of the Year at the Convenience Awards 2025. The store's proactive measures—such as relocating spirits displays, introducing pictorial sleeves, body-worn cameras, and advanced CCTV analytics—have drastically reduced crime rates and enhanced safety for both customers and colleagues.

Debbie MacDonald, Lead Profit Protection Manager, said: “We are incredibly proud. By implementing smart, intelligence-led security measures, we have not only reduced crime but also created a safer environment for colleagues and customers.”

Our commitment to supporting local food and drink producers through our Scottish Favourites competition has delivered standout results—on shelves, in the press, and in communities across the country. Launched to spotlight Scottish brands and products, the judges selected six winning producers from across Scotland who have since been stocked in Scotmid stores and celebrated across national media.

The Scottish Favourites campaign didn’t just get products onto shelves—it made headlines across the country. With extensive media coverage, the campaign reached a combined audience of over 37 million people. This wave of national and trade media attention significantly boosted awareness of the winning brands. Karen Robinson, Founder and CEO of Three Robins, shared: “I was delighted that Three Robins was selected as one of Scotmid’s Scottish Favourites, expanding distribution of our oat milk range and allowing us to reach more households across Scotland.

I would highly recommend applying to any future Scottish Favourite initiatives as a great first step into convenience retail for other new food and drink brands.” Alex Equi, Brand Manager at Equi’s Ice Cream, added: “Winning the competition was a proud milestone for our brand. We’re proud to be part of such a strong celebration of Scottish food and drink.” Scotmid’s Scottish Favourites offers businesses a route into retail, practical marketing support, and visibility that can often be hard to secure independently. Amanda Naylor talks to us about the charity's work.

Volunteering matters because it creates a powerful ripple effect that strengthens communities. It is not just about doing something for others. It connects us to people, places and causes we care about. It brings support to where it is most needed. Volunteering is worth billions of pounds to Scotland’s economy, but the impact runs much deeper. It improves mental and physical health, reduces inequality, and helps people build skills for life and work. People often think of volunteers as generous individuals who give their time. While that is true, we should also recognise that volunteering brings real joy and fulfilment to the person doing it. Ask any regular volunteer, and they will likely tell you how much they value it. Whether it is feeling more connected to their community, improving their own wellbeing, or contributing to a cause they believe in, volunteering gives back in many ways. At Volunteering Matters, we have seen this in action for over 60 years. Whether it is an hour, a day or a regular commitment, the time given by volunteers can change lives. That includes their own.

Amanda Naylor OBE, CEO Volunteering Matters Amanda is a seasoned advocate for community engagement, drawing on extensive experience to highlight how volunteering unites people to tackle society’s most pressing challenges. Her work explores the transformative power of giving time, connecting individuals and communities through shared purpose.

"People often think of volunteers as generous individuals who give their time. While that is true, we should also recognise that volunteering brings real joy and fulfilment to the person doing it."

A look at our work in action We work alongside people, local groups and organisations to make a real difference through volunteering. Here are some examples of how we are supporting communities in Scotland.

We help tackle loneliness by encouraging friendships and giving people more chances to connect with others. For over 20 years, our Retired and Senior Volunteer Programme (RSVP) has been helping older people feel more connected and improve their wellbeing in Forth Valley and Glasgow. Whether it is reading with children in schools, joining a friendly knitting group, going on walks together or helping someone with small jobs around the house, RSVP volunteers give their time and energy to support others. Their communities feel the benefit.

One of our regular volunteers has been helping at Braehead Primary School in Stirling since 2010. He says, “It gets me out of the house and gives me something to look forward to every week. I have met new people and tried to make a positive difference in their lives.” Explore the range of ways we are supporting senior volunteers across Scotland. volunteeringmatters.org.uk/rsvp/

We help people stay healthy by supporting mental and physical wellbeing through volunteering and social activities. Our Action Earth programme has brought over 4,000 volunteers together to care for local green spaces and help nature thrive. Run with support from the National Lottery Community Fund and NatureScot, the programme sees volunteers choose their own projects, so the work always reflects what matters most to each community. From planting a community orchard in Wigtown to protecting the coastline in Thurso, people come

together to make a real difference. And by working on something hands-on and meaningful, volunteers not only help the environment but also felt the joy of doing something positive for their community. Click to find out more by listening to the Make Space for Nature podcast from NatureScot, which features Robert, Action Earth Engagement Manager, and Joe Knowles, who has been volunteering with Action Earth for 14 years.

We make volunteering easier for everyone by removing barriers that stop people from taking part. In Dundee, our Mentoring and Supported Volunteering project helps people who are facing challenges in finding work, getting into education or feeling part of their community. With the support of volunteer mentors and local volunteering opportunities, participants grow in confidence, learn new skills and gain real-life experience that can open new doors.

"I would highly recommend becoming a mentor with MSV to anyone who is passionate about making a positive impact and helping others realise their full potential. Volunteering to be a mentor can help you feel connected to your community in new ways and connect you with other volunteer mentors on the programme." – Orlaith, volunteer mentor with MSV Dundee. Stewart from Volunteering Matters shares a short explainer about the project and why he finds being part of it so rewarding.

We bring people together from different backgrounds and age groups to build understanding and stronger communities. Family Supporters Edinburgh is all about helping families across the city feel more supported and less alone. Our amazing volunteers offer practical help, a listening ear and friendly company to families going through tough times. Each family is matched with a dedicated volunteer who spends regular one-to-one time with them, working together on goals chosen by the family, for the family. It is about building trust, boosting confidence and making things a little bit easier, one step at a time.

“I started volunteering as I wanted to give something back to the community and help families who are struggling and need a friendly hand. Volunteering not only changed the lives of families, but also mine!” – Ewelina, Family Supporters Mentor Take a look at the project impact report for 2024/25 and see the difference it is making in the community.

Hallmark cards in stores now for Maggie's

Scotmid has partnered with Maggie’s and greeting card brand Hallmark to become the first retail store selling a unique and heartfelt collection of cancer support cards — helping customers show they care while supporting a vital cause. Developed by Hallmark in collaboration with Maggie’s, the six-card range was created to provide honest, compassionate messages for those living with cancer and their loved ones. Each card features thoughtful, emotionally resonant wording such as “I’m here for you”, “Treatment completed”, and “I loved you before cancer and love you now” — offering a powerful way to express support and solidarity during difficult times.

The collection is illustrated by Hallmark designer Lisa Ellson, who was inspired by her own cancer diagnosis and the loss of both parents. Her personal insight brings warmth and authenticity to each design, moving away from traditional ‘battle’ language and focusing instead on empathy and connection. As part of Scotmid’s 2024–2025 charity partnership with Maggie’s, 10p from every card sold in Scotmid stores will be donated to Maggie’s, helping to fund expert, free cancer support services through their network of welcoming centres across Scotland and the UK. Hannah Harding, Partnerships Lead at Maggie’s, added: “This partnership with Scotmid and Hallmark brings together compassion, creativity, and community. These cards offer a way to connect and comfort — and by purchasing them in Scotmid, customers are also helping Maggie’s be there for more people when they need us most.” The cards are available now, in Scotmid and Lakes & Dales Coop stores, offering a way to support loved ones with sincerity — while raising vital funds for one of the UK’s most trusted cancer support charities.

The cards come in six beautiful, creative, and sensitive designs.

How grief feels No two people grieve in the same way. The unique relationship you have had with the person who has died was known is not shared by anyone else. Some experts suggest 18 months to two years as the time when grief begins to ease, and become less intrusive, but everyone’s grief is different and there’s no fixed timeline for your feelings. There’s not really a right or wrong way to grieve. You may find that you: • Feel numb at first, or that things feel a little surreal

• Are on ‘automatic pilot’, managing life normally • Are overwhelmed with grief. • Feel some relief mixed in with the sadness, particularly if the person you cared about was weak or in pain before they died • Feel agitated and on edge, although this often settles to a feeling of sadness and calm over time. • Physical effects of grief can include crying, loss of appetite, poor sleep, aches and pains, tiredness, and loss of concentration.

Maggie’s is here for you We're here with you: in our 24 centres across the UK, on the phone and online. It’s always free and you don’t need an appointment – just come in.

Ways to start coping with bereavement There's no quick or easy way through grief, but the following tips may help on difficult days: • Eat, drink, wash and try to get some sleep. It sounds obvious, but taking care of yourself will help you begin to cope with grief. • Be aware that you may not be concentrating as well as usual, so pay extra attention if you’re driving or taking on a difficult task. Try not to resort to coping strategies involving drugs or alcohol. • Don’t ignore your own health needs. Bereaved people seem to be more at risk of infections, and stress-related illnesses. • Getting out in the fresh air, and taking some exercise can help clear the cobwebs, tire you out for the right reasons, and help reduce any sense of isolation • Looking after something living - a pet, a member of the family, the garden - can give a sense of purpose and satisfaction.

• Find some tranquillity by lighting a candle, reading, listening to music or relaxing podcasts, or taking a bath. Maggie’s offer workshops, groups and relaxation sessions which help relieve stress. • Birthdays and anniversaries can be particularly hard and may cause intense grief and sadness. Plan ahead for how you might deal with these occasions, perhaps take the day off work or spend time with family. • Not everyone will need or want counselling, but if your grief feels overwhelming, then talking to family and friends, your GP, bereavement groups, the hospice, local church or community groups can help. Or you can just come into your nearest Maggie’s for somewhere to talk with our cancer support specialists and psychologists. Find your nearest centre at maggies.org/centres. As soon as I walked in, a friendly volunteer offered me a drink. I met Eilidh, a cancer support specialist and told her my story. I ended up in a mess, I just wasn't coping at all. But I felt okay afterwards. It was a release, the pressure came off after I opened up. I made another appointment to come back. I’ve been back to Maggie’s every other Wednesday ever since, without fail. I didn’t stop when Lorna died. I see Jack, the psychologist, before I see Eilidh, and we have a good chat. What I have seen and had to deal with has scarred me for life. But to know the support is always there at Maggie’s, to go for a blether and have a cup of tea and a cake. I always feel so much better when I come out.”

Davy’s story Davy was supported by Maggie’s when his wife Lorna was diagnosed with an incurable brain tumour. “Lorna and I had been together since just before she turned 16. We've been

married 37 years, together for 39. In October 2020, Lorna was diagnosed with an incurable brain tumour. Neither of us could deal with this news that had just come completely out of the blue. A radiotherapist told me that if I was struggling, I should go to Maggie’s – which was just over the road.

Donations help provide essential support: £7 c ould pay for someone’s first chat with a Cancer Support Specialist. £15 could provide one-to-one financial advice. £30 could fund a session with a psychologist to reduce anxiety. All contributions mean more people will have access to the care they need when they hear, the words ‘you have cancer’.

Thank you for helping us make a difference. justgiving.com/campaign/scotmidmaggies

“Design a Garden” Competition Blossoms with Creative Winner

Young imaginations blossomed in Scotmid's "Design a Garden" competition, with 450 thoughtful entries from young people across our communities eager to share their design for our Head Office grounds. After careful deliberation, our panel of judges selected a standout design by Shona from Inverness. The judges praised the entry for its meticulous attention to detail, creative use of plant varieties, and an inspiring layout that perfectly balances tranquillity with accessibility and environmental engagement. In celebration of the International Year of Co-operatives 2025, the winning design will now be brought to life at Scotmid Head Office in Newbridge, Edinburgh. Once planted, it will serve as a living tribute to this momentous year—and a daily reminder of the power of community and creativity. Congratulations to Shona, their school, and everyone who took part—your passion and imagination have helped grow something truly special.

We’re proud to have launched our pilot Retail Apprenticeship Programme—a key step in our commitment to developing talent and supporting local employment. Last month, we were delighted to welcome our first two apprentices, who have now started their journey in our stores in Broxburn and South Queensferry. These apprentices will gain valuable hands-on experience while working towards a nationally recognised qualification, delivered in partnership with our learning provider, Babington. They’ll be supported every step of the way through structured learning and mentoring from experienced colleagues. This initiative is designed to build essential retail skills—from customer service to store operations—setting them up for long- term success with the Society. This pilot is an exciting part of our wider strategy to invest in the communities we serve by creating meaningful career opportunities and the longer-term ambition is to roll the apprenticeship program out to other regions. BLOOD CANCER WE NEED MORE STEM CELL DONORS

DKMS: giving second chances at life

DKMS, a leading blood cancer charity, runs the largest stem cell register in the UK with over one million donors. The charity promotes registration, ensures equal access to stem cell transplants, and researches to improve recovery rates for blood cancer patients. With over 12.5 million donors worldwide, DKMS has facilitated over 125,000 stem cell donations. DKMS spokesperson Deborah Hyde says, “Only one in three patients finds a stem cell donor within their family. The rest need a match from strangers, offering them a second chance at life. By joining the register, you could be that lifeline in someone's greatest time of need. While most will never be called to donate, those who are have the potential to save a life.”

In the UK, someone is diagnosed with blood cancer every 14 minutes. This includes conditions such as leukaemia, myeloma, sickle cell disease, and aplastic anaemia. Approximately 2,000 people in the UK are waiting for a stem cell transplant to treat these conditions. Therefore, there is a need for more individuals to join the stem cell donor register. Currently, 2.1% of people aged 16-65 in Scotland are registered with DKMS, a blood cancer charity, which is below the UK average of 2.4%. Joining the register is straightforward and painless, taking only a few minutes. Individuals aged 17-55 who are in good health can sign up with DKMS.

“I was one of the lucky ones"

Andy's Story In late 2023, Andy, a 53-year-old senior infrastructure security analyst with Scotmid, experienced blood loss during urination. His GP immediately referred him to a hospital in Edinburgh, where diagnostic tests confirmed he had leukaemia. Andy was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia, a condition more prevalent in adults that can progress rapidly and aggressively. "I was admitted and started on chemotherapy drugs the same day," Andy recalls. The beginning marked a challenging period. "The mental journey is just as tough as the physical one," he remarks. Nonetheless, Andy considers himself fortunate because the chemotherapy was effective, allowing him to undergo a stem cell transplant. In his situation, his elder

brother was identified as a compatible match and was able to donate at the age of 58.

Hear Andy's story

Andy is now a year post-transplant and undergoes medical evaluations every six weeks. He is keen to promote awareness about the process and significance of stem cell donation. “If you're on the donor register and match someone needing a transplant, 90% of the time it's similar to donating blood platelets at any donation centre,” he explains. Andy’s message to potential donors is simple: “More donors are always needed.”

How can you help?

Joining the DKMS stem cell donor register is quick and easy:

• A ll it takes is some quick and painless mouth swabs and a few health questions • A nyone aged 17-55 and in general good health can sign up with DKMS. (You’ll stay on the register until your 61st birthday). • Go to www.dkms.org.uk/scotmid to order your free swab kit. Complete it and send it back: you’re all set! • G ot questions? Email DKMS info@dkms.org.uk or send a message on social media: @dkms.uk @dkms_uk • N ot eligible to become a donor? Richard's Story “I’ve done something meaningful. Helping someone directly is incredible. It’s an amazing feeling,” says Richard, a partnerships manager.

outpatient sessions. “It was straightforward and comfortable,” Richard recalls.

The recipient, a 50 to 60-year- old man in the US, remains anonymous. “I got emotional knowing I could help him. I hope to meet him someday,” Richard says. Richard’s story inspired others. “After my talk at work, colleagues said they registered because of me,” he reflects.

Richard joined DKMS after his friend’s son, Jack, was diagnosed with blood cancer. He organised fundraising events and registration drives. “Jack finished treatment in February 2023,” he shares. In May 2024, another friend’s

wife was diagnosed with incurable blood cancer while pregnant. “The baby was delivered early and is doing well,” Richard adds. In August 2024, Richard learned he was a match for a patient. After medical tests and preparation with G-CSF injections, he donated over two

By joining the DKMS stem cell donor register, you too could offer someone with blood cancer a second chance at life. As Richard puts it, “The reward I got from the experience was enough for me. Donating my stem cells wasn’t about me; it was about that person on the other side.”

Rachael's Story Rachael, a 39 year old nurse from Fife, Scotland is mum to one year old Daisy. Last year, Rachael was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of blood cancer known as myelofibrosis, and was told she needed a stem cell transplant. A global search began to find a stranger who could give her another chance at life. Then, earlier this year, Rachael received lifechanging news. Not one, but two people were identified as compatible stem cell donor matches for her. These complete strangers, both based in America, said that they would be happy to donate their cells, and Rachael has just had her potentially life-saving transplant.

Did you know? • In most cases, donating stem cells for a transplant is a simple outpatient procedure, similar to giving blood platelets. • Y our blood group is not a factor in finding a stem cell donor match.

• W hen you join the stem cell register with DKMS, your swabs are only used for the purpose of testing to see if you are match – they are not shared with any third parties. • People from UK ethnic minority communities have lower

representation on the stem cell donor register, resulting in longer waits for patients with blood cancers or disorders from these backgrounds to find a suitable donor match.
