Boaz to be more confident and experienced this fall
By Brandon K. Pierce The Sports Ledger The Boaz Pirates overcame a 1-7 start, and rallied for three late season wins, to finish fourth in Class 5A Region 7 last fall. The program also reached the opening round of the state playoffs and finished with an overall 4-7 record. This year, Boaz hopes to be better, and according to head coach Jeremy Sullivan the players have been working to get bigger and stronger. This includes improvements in both
played significant roles last season. Sullivan also noted he has three running backs that will be able to compete this fall. “Most of our experience is back on offense,” he said. However, the team’s main significant loss to graduation was receiver Gavin Smart. Defensively, Boaz will return five starters. However, some players have moved to different positions. “We feel like we’re on a good path,” said Sullivan.
the weight room and in nutrition. Overall, Sullivan said the kids have done a good job this summer and he hopes they will have more “confidence” this year to build from the success the program had late last season. “I am looking forward to getting it started,” added Sullivan. The Pirates will set sail this fall with about 60 players on the roster. This includes eight starters on offense, including two that
“What I want us to do is be as prepared as we can for every game,” he added. The Pirates are already preparing for the 2023 season opener, which will be against Jacksonville on August 25. Boaz will open road competition at Marshall County rival Albertville the following week on September 1. Sullivan said the county rival match-up against the Aggies is “always going to be very competitive and tough.”
The Pirates coach several other county schools will be competitive this fall, including Guntersville, Arab and Douglas. “I think they will be a also believes contender,” he said about Douglas, which will be the Pirate’s final region game of the year on October 27. Boaz will be competing again this fall in Class 5A Region 7 and Sullivan thinks that all region games are also going to be “very competitive.”
In addition to the the Pirates other Class 5A Region 7 matchups include Scottsboro, Guntersville, Arab, and Sardis. Boaz was originally set for a Region game against Crossville, but the Lions program will not be competing in varsity football this fall. However, Sullivan was able to find a non-region replacement game for that week, which will be on September 15 at Cleburn County. Douglas Eagles,
