HEALTH AND WELLNESS INITIATIVES IN THE SOUTHEASTERN PROVINCE The Southeastern Province continues to prioritize the health and wellness of its members through bold leadership, innovative programming, and a commitment to community-centered care. Spearheaded by Brother Antonio Martez, the province has played a vital role in aligning with Grand Chapter Initiatives that address both physical and mental well-being within our brotherhood. A key initiative embraced by the province is the "Are You OK?" campaign, designed to raise awareness about the mental health challenges uniquely affecting Black and African American men. Despite 21% of Black men reporting symptoms of mental illness, only 39% of our brothers receive the necessary services and care. This discrepancy is not only concerning—it’s a call to action.
Research shows that Black men are 20% more likely to experience serious psychological distress, often compounded by systemic racism and social inequities. Alarmingly, between 56% and 74% of Black males exposed to trauma may need mental health services. These realities highlight the urgent need for culturally responsive treatments and sustained support networks within our communities. Through awareness campaigns and partnerships, the Southeastern Province is working to break stigmas and encourage open, proactive mental health engagement among brothers.
The province has also supported Good Health Wins, a national initiative promoting disease prevention and health equity. Through this effort, the Southeastern Province received over $6,000 in grant funding, which has been used to extend health education and outreach efforts to both brothers and the communities we serve. Physical wellness is also a central focus. The Southeastern Province currently ranks third nationally in the fraternity’s National Fitness Channel, with 44 hours of logged activity and 37 active participants. This strong performance reflects a culture of accountability, support, and shared goals in promoting regular exercise and healthy living. From promoting nutritious eating habits to championing fitness and mental health awareness, the Southeastern Province is building a comprehensive approach to wellness—one that strengthens our brotherhood and uplifts our communities. Under the continued leadership of Brother Antonio Martez and the collaboration of committed brothers throughout the province, our health and wellness efforts are not just initiatives—they’re a way of life.
