AI In Packaging (CONT’D FROM PAGE 28)

D’Angelo: Jeff, you mentioned a couple of programs that are being used in the design space now. Putt: If you want to use text to imagery, you have several available and more added every day. There’s Midjourney; DALL-E is through ChatGPT 4.0. And then AI is inside Pho- toshop and Illustrator and Acrobat now; there are genera- tive AI helpers that you can add back. You can do some of these repetitive tasks that you can take backgrounds out, add new backgrounds. But going back to what Jim saying, it’s only as good as your ability to prompt the generative AI in in the direction that you want. You have to know what you’re asking, and then you have to tell the AI in very specific terms what you want to see and what you don’t want to see, and what you want it to do and what you don’t. So, I find more and more I’m giving it instructions like, “Don’t say anything, just lis- ten.” Then “run this through and then tell me when you’re done.” Every time you ask it something, prompt something, it’ll give you a long list regurgitating what it understands you just said. So more and more, I’m telling it, just be quiet, sit there and listen. And then when I tell you, go ahead and give me the result of that. Video AI programs like Sora are getting better and bet- ter, so that video is going to be the next big area where AI makes a huge difference creatively. D’Angelo: David, what limitations and opportunities do you see for AI in the manufacturing process? Successes? Wiens: I think from an opportunity standpoint, you can look at the MIT report that came out in April. It shows that the vast majority of the real gains and successes are happen- ing in design and engineering in the generative AI space, in chatbots, in customer-facing, and internal communica- tions. A lot of the challenges and limitations come from integration with existing systems, data management, silo data, things like that. So, when you try to integrate these solutions fully, you almost always hit a roadblock. I think they said 57 percent of all deployments and manufactur- ing of AI stalled because of data availability. That’s a major limitation. There’s a major limitation in people’s ability to use the tools. Stable Diffusion is another one for video and photo de- velopment, but it takes more time and energy to get into it. Because we don’t really understand what the tools are about at a higher level in organizations, we’re not putting enough time and investment in our employees to give them the chance to explore and experiment. I think a lot of people are looking for the big solution that ties everything together without a lack of understand- ing that you’ve got to get these foundational things figured out first. And in that space, I think there’s a huge amount of ca- pabilities and potential to streamline, automate, and en- hance the workflows at that level before you even start to try to integrate these things in a more full, holistic way.
