AI In Packaging (CONT’D FROM PAGE 32)

today, and I’m generalizing saying every, but it is almost everything you can buy — it doesn’t matter where it’s man- ufactured, in Milwaukee or in Germany, for the most part — they come with links to cloud-based endpoints. Meaning, right now, you don’t have to do any extra work as an OEM, apart from a bit of engineering work for some hours on our end, to send data from your machine directly into a cloud-based storage. And that, and the fact that everything we’ve been selling and most people have been selling in the last five to 10 years, has been connect- ed. It’s on the network. It means a lot of that information across the machine is more intelligent. Even sensors in the last four, five years have become more data-rich. So, a little prox switch, which is a one and zero for the most part. Nowadays, you can buy the same sensor for a small price, and you can get a gradient of how much input it’s getting. So, you could essentially look at it in detail, tell when that sensor is starting to go bad because of the same action producing less of a response. I think the fascinating thing, and the main reason AI is a big part of the machinery side is, we build machines and supply for every box plant. Different box plants may use the same machine in different contexts running different products. So historically, things like this have been poor because it isn’t one size fits all. So, you need some way of accommodating the fact that you and your specific use case are doing something different from somebody else. And in most cases, if I’m honest, you’re using the same machine differently month to month, year to year. You can’t just have a static thing that says, “this is good and this is bad.” The powerful thing about AI is it’s just built on learning. That’s the beauty of it. As long as it has all these ingredi- ents that people have been talking about around access to data and everything else, it can continue to learn, and it can continue to be specific to your use and be effective consistently. D’Angelo: Jeff, when we formed this committee last year, you had an idea that there might be some potential uti- lizing AI and data relative to your roll stock, but it ended up not going anywhere. Maybe you want to make some comments about that because there’ll be some dry holes, too, right? Putt: I had this great idea where I would take all the roll stock information that we had gathered over several years, dump it into a data warehouse, and have a kid who was a junior in high school who was a Python expert and one of the early adopters of AI work on it. Python is the programming language that is generally used behind the large language models and generative AI. So we tried and we fiddled around with it for months. But ultimately, you need to have the software programs that clean the data, that parse the data, that utilize it. It’s just raw data. It’s a bunch of zeros and ones. Nothing is
