Meet the Western Growers Leadership Program Charles Ferini, Harvest Manager, Betteravia Farms

Charles “Charlie” Ferini is a fourth-generation farmer from Santa Maria, Calif., where his passion for agriculture began early, riding around the ranch with his father and grandfather. He earned degrees in Agricultural Business and Crop Production from the University of Arizona before gaining hands-on experience working in melon harvest at Fisher Ranches in Blythe, Calif. In September 2022, Charlie fulfilled a lifelong dream by returning to his family’s business, Betteravia Farms. Since then, he has taken on both harvest and production roles, learning all facets of the operation.

It’s a family thing! I am blessed to be able to be a fourth-generation farmer and grow my passion for agriculture alongside my family. Every day I am thankful for the opportunity to complete this fulfilling work with such an amazing group and continue to grow the history and dedication that has spanned nearly 100 years.

Living the dream. So much of who I am today stems from my Dad (Rob), and Grandfather (Milo). Their dedication to their work and immense love for their family inspires me to work hard day in and day out. I could not ask for better role models. Here we are a few years back when they took a trip over to Huron to visit me and grab dinner at Harris Ranch when I was working in the melon harvest.

A love for nature. Traveling and the outdoors are two of my favorite things. I am always hiking and running, or if I’m in a new place, just snooping around and taking in the scenes. The list of places I want to travel to grows by the day. This last year I was lucky enough to travel to Switzerland and explore Valle Maggia where my ancestors originated generations before.

Find me in the fields! Most of my work experience has been as a harvest manager which keeps me on my feet walking fields day in and day out. Whether it’s melons or vegetables, it’s an easy way to get my steps in and watch the sunrise and sunset over beautiful fields.

Beardown! Attending Arizona athletic events is one of my favorite pastimes. I always try to make a trip for a few football games every year with old friends from school. From PAC-12 basketball tournaments in Vegas to football games at Utah, if my friends hatch an idea of a trip, I’ll gladly lead the charge.
