DS Smith Maps Out Sustainable Future

BIR Releases Recycling Report

The Bureau of International Recycling (BIR), headquartered in Brussels, Belgium, has compiled an analysis that positions recycling as one of the key solutions to improved end-of-life management of plastics, which it introduced October14 during BIRWorld RecyclingWeek, a series of webinars running October 12-16. Persisting Problem The organization said the report es- tablishes the contribution of plastics to everyday life but also examines the envi- ronmental and economic harm that can be created at their end of life. “Essential- ly, what makes plastics useful is exactly what makes them harmful: They persist,” the report states, before explaining how recycling can play a major role in resolv- ing the problems associated with end-of- life plastics. An Important Contribution Describing recycling as“a systematically under-used form of waste management,” BIR uses the report to call on govern- ments to set up a favorable environment for plastics recycling and to increase the quality of recyclables collected. The orga- nization says ways to do this include ex- tended producer responsibility schemes,

by Greg Kishbaugh D S Smith, a provider of sustainable packaging, has launched its new sustainability vision and strategy, “Now and Next,” which maps out ambitious commitments and goals for the next decade.

“By taking a whole systems approach, we have a huge opportuni- ty to make significant progress against our environmental, social and governance responsibilities.” Through its two-phased “Now and Next” approach, DS Smith will continue to focus on the transition to a circular economy by part- nering with customers, communities, governments and influencers to keep materials in use, design out waste and regenerate natural sys- tems. It will continue to focus on CO2 reduction, protecting biodiver- sity and reducing water consumption. “As we respond to the changing world in which we live and operate, it is critical that our drive to redefine packaging continues to place circularity at the heart of our business,”said Miles Roberts, group CEO of DS Smith.“Our new strategy allows us to move beyond just having

The Recycling Partnership Issues 10 Recycling Grants The Recycling Partnership, Falls Church, Virginia, an- nounced October 8 that one year after hosting its inaugural Leadership Summit where representatives from 50 cities attended a two-day recycling summit, the organization is partnering with 10 of those communities to improve recy- cling. The Recycling Partnership said these collaborations and resulting grants will affect 1.3 million households by helping reduce contamination and capture more than 37 million new pounds of quality recyclables. The June 2019 summit, sponsored in part by the Pepsi- Co Foundation, the Walmart Foundation and Target, fea- tured how-to workshops and showcased best management practices for implementing new recycling infrastructure, fighting contamination and creating messaging to drive be- havior change. Participants were equipped with tools and resources to drive recycling transformation locally. Summit attendees represented 50 of the largest U.S. com- munities focused on improving curbside recycling pro- grams and recycling at multifamily properties. Combined, these cities included more than 45 million Americans, or 14 percent of the U.S. population. Leadership grantees in- clude the cities of Baltimore, Maryland; Detroit, Michigan; Houston, Texas; Omaha, Nebraska; Philadelphia, Pennsylva- nia; Portland, Oregon; San Diego, California; Tacoma,Wash- ington;Tucson,Arizona; andWashington, DC.

a strong circular business model ourselves to delivering more circular solutions for our customers and the wider society – replacing problem plastics, taking carbon out of supply chains and providing innovative recycling solutions.” “Our Now and Next Sustainability Strategy reconfirms our commitment to the circular economy and it sets out four new focus areas,” saidWouter vanTol, Head of Government, Community Affairs & Sustainability. “As a strategic partner of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, we have set ambitious targets in each area that deliver solutions for the short term and achieve greater impact in the future.” The strategy sets out four key pillars, alongside a contin- ued commitment to reduce CO2 emissions by 30 percent against a 2015 baseline, and care for its forests and biodiver- sity wherever it operates. The key areas of the strategy will drive sustainable growth at DS Smith through its ambitious targets: Closing the loop through better design — By 2023, it will manufacture 100 percent reusable or recyclable pack- aging and its aim is that by 2030, all packaging will be recy- cled or reused. “We have 700 designers constantly seeking ways to im- prove our packaging,” said Susana Aucejo, Surface & Barrier Director.“By 2023,we are committed to manufacturing 100 percent reusable and recyclable packaging. We have already made strides toward this goal with a level at 98 percent, and it is our aim that by 2023, 100 percent of our packaging is reused or recycled. “One route to our 2030 target,” said Robyn MacDonald, Solutions Consultant, Packaging Division,“may be offering our customers integrated closed loop services. Collecting their used cardboard and turning it into their packaging within just 14 days. Some of our customers are already ben- efiting from this service.” Protecting natural resources by making the most of every fiber — By 2025, it will optimize fiber use for indi- vidual supply chains in 100 percent of its new packaging solutions and by 2030, it aims to optimize every fiber for all supply chains. “We are always asking ourselves how we can do the same job or better using less fibre,” said Alan Potts, Design & In- novation Director, Packaging Division.“So by 2025, we will optimize fibre usage across individual supply chains for all our new packaging solutions and by 2030, we aim to opti- mize every fibre for every supply chain.” “By understanding specific supply chains, we can spec- ify performance requirements more accurately, enabling us to use less fibre in smarter ways,” said Elena Fleming, Innovation & Concept Development Manager, Packaging Division. Reducing waste and pollution through circular solutions — By 2025, it will take 1 billion pieces of prob- lem plastics off store shelves, take 250,000 vehicles off the road and work with partners to find solutions for ‘hard to recycle’ packaging. Meanwhile, by 2030 it aims to use packaging and recycling to enable the circular economy by replacing problem plastics, reducing customer carbon and eliminating consumer packaging waste.

“Our research and development teams have already helped solve the coffee cup challenge with capacity for 2.5 billion cups to be recycled in the UK. But, going further, by 2025 we will take 1 billion pieces of problem plastics off su- permarket shelves, take 250,000 [trucks] off the roads and work with partners such as Aquapak Polymers to find solu- tions for ‘hard to recycle’ packaging,” said Guy Lacey, Next Generation Technology Director. “Looking to 2030, our circular approach will continue with a focus on replacing problem plastics, reducing cus- tomer carbon and eliminating consumer packaging waste,” saidTom Campbell-White, European Strategic Development Director. Equipping people to lead the transition to a circu- lar economy — By 2025 it will engage 100 percent of its employees on the circular economy and by 2030 it will en- gage 5 million people on the circular economy and circular lifestyles. “We are engaging every one of our 30,000 employees in the Circular Economy,” said Ann-Louise Hancock, Head of Learning & Development,“and by 2030, we will extend this to 5 million people globally. Engaging the younger genera- tions is a vital part of this and through our partnership with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation we have developed lesson plans for schools and for universities.” “Our people are the foundation of our success,” said Julie Weastcott,Health & Safety Director,“and we continue to pri-

banning the use of prohibited chemicals in plastics, enforc- ing mandatory recycled-content quotas and establishing quality standards for recycled plastics. The report also identifies a need to bring together the whole plastics value chain to collaborate on the circularity of plastics. The report urges manufacturers and producers to work with recyclers on design for recycling, facilitating the sorting of collected scrap and ensuring higher levels of recyclability. Waste Management Releases Sustainability Report Waste Management (WM), Houston, Texas, released its 2020 Sustainability Report, which highlights the company’s progress toward its 2025 and 2038 sustainability goals, key performance indicators, recycling advancements and recent awards. Complementing the report, a new Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Resource Hub provides access to data related to performance, policies and initiatives. Centered Around Principles WM’s 2020 Sustainability Report highlights center around five of the company’s principles: WM’s people-first culture : According to the company, WM’s Commitments and Values are guiding principles to highlight what matters most: people, customers, environ- ment and a dedication to safety. Recycling :WM invested a total of more than $200 million in recycling infrastructure across 2018 and 2019 and pro- cessed a record 15.5 million tons of material for beneficial use in 2019. Solving waste together : WM helps customers man- age waste in environmentally responsible and valuable ways, the company said. Solutions include increasing use of post-consumer resin in products. In collaboration with Cascade Cart Solutions,WM is testing what it calls “the in- dustry’s first EcoCarts.” Providing long-term value :When landfills reach capaci- ty, they don’t reach the end of their useful life.WM converts some closed landfill land into beneficial assets, including recreational spaces, wildlife habitats and solar energy devel- opment projects, where eight sites collectively generate 60 megawatts of power. Mitigating climate change and reducing emissions : WM tackles climate change through reductions in green- house gas emissions from landfills, fleet and electricity use, and through recycling services. Over the past decade,WM has reduced its carbon intensity as measured by emissions per ton of waste disposed. WM said it is striving to reduce fleet GHG emissions per mile driven, working toward a science-based target to cut fleet emissions by 45 percent by 2038 against a 2010 base- line. By the end of 2019, for every 1,000 miles driven,WM had reduced its GHG emissions by 32 percent, and total GHG emissions by 36 percent for its collection and sup- port fleet.

In the past year, DS Smith met a number of sustainability milestones, including an 11 percent reduction in emissions in 2019 compared to 2015 on a like-for-like basis and 100 percent engagement in community programs across its sites employing more than 50 people. An international packaging company, it produced over 17 billion boxes in 2019/20 and is Europe’s largest cardboard and paper recycler, managing 6 million tons per year, mak- ing it a net positive recycler. DS Smith is one of only 16 Strategic Partners of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation – the recognized global authority on the circular economy. “At DS Smith, we’ve worked hard over many years to re- duce our environmental impact through lower carbon emis- sions, lower water usage and doing more with less,” said Miles Roberts, CEO. “But now I believe companies can go even further. We can use our skills, resources, and most of all our people to support society and work with others to find the answers to some of the world’s biggest sustainability challenges.” DS Smith is a provider of corrugated packaging world- wide, supported by recycling and papermaking opera- tions. A member of the FTSE 100, DS Smith focuses on creating innovative and sustainable packaging solutions, using a closed-loop recycling model – in which paper and corrugated is collected, recycled and then used again to make packaging materials. North American operations are headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, with 15 manufac- turing, paper and recycling facilities, totaling more than 2,000 employees.
