BALANCE & DIZZINESS: HOW YOU CAN FURTHER PREVENT FALLS

Falling is one of the highest day-to-day risks for individuals 65 and older. With as many as 30% of falls resulting in a moderate to severe injury, it’s not uncommon to see a single fall as the beginning of a vicious cycle

Control Your Environment • The majority of falls occur in the bathroom. Consider setting up a shower bar and floor grip pads, even if you don’t feel unsteady right now. Make the change before you need it. • Many people are hesitant to start using an assistive walking device. There may be bad days when you may feel off-balance or dizzy. Even if you don’t use a mobility aid every day, it is good to have one around. If you are concerned about getting tired or weak during a walk, a rollator walker can double as a convenient seat. Keep Moving! Regular exercise can ensure that your body maintains the strength and conditioning necessary to stay upright. Balance deteriorates more quickly than strength or flexibility. If you don’t use it, you lose it! Talk to your primary care provider before starting an exercise routine. Reach Out! Treat falls seriously. If you or a loved one experiences a fall, please don’t shrug it off. A fall can mean that there’s an underlying issue that you may not even be aware of. If you’re feeling unstable or dizzy when walking around, don’t hesitate to seek help from a Physical Therapist. We can help improve your overall balance and stability challenges you may face in your daily life.

Falls are not inevitable and, in the vast majority of cases, are easily preventable. Here are some tips to help prevent falls and keep yourself safe at home.

Warm-Up Before You Get Up Sometimes, you can get lightheaded or dizzy when first standing up after sitting for a while, due to blood pooling in your feet. When you get up too quickly, your body doesn’t have enough time to get the blood up to your brain before you stand up. You can help this by marching your feet or kicking your legs before you stand up to help your blood circulate. Keep Your Home Free of Tripping Hazards • Keep a clear walkway throughout your home. Make sure there are no objects or furniture that you have to step over. Make things easier on yourself. • Rugs should lay flat. A rug pad will help if your rug tends to bunch up, or side • Keep an eye on your pets. Know where they are so that they don’t become a tripping hazard. Consider using a baby gate if they like to stay under your feet on the stairs. By R. Dawson Marshall, PT, DPT

1. How did you decide to become a physical therapist and what motivates you to work with patients? Growing up, I always played sports and was active. I personally cannot sit behind a desk all day and liked being in a gym environment. I am a big believer in movement as one of the best medicines and I enjoy helping others get back to what they enjoy doing. It is rewarding seeing patients progress and express gratitude for helping them return to what they love to do.

1. How did you decide to become a physical therapist and what motivates you to work with patients? When I was in high school, I tore my ACL playing soccer. I had surgery in my junior year followed by many months of PT. This was during the time that I was applying to colleges and thinking about what I wanted to do with my life. Spending

so much time with my physical therapist and seeing how much PT affected my recovery and ability to get back to playing sports opened my eyes to what a wonderful career it could be. Helping to be a part of patients’ recovery, whether it be from surgery, an injury, or chronic pain, is definitely what motivates me to come to work every day. 2. In your words, what makes Excel Physical Therapy different from other physical therapy clinics? Having the time to spend with my patients is the biggest stand out factor about Excel Physical Therapy. It is what drove me to this company and what keeps me here. Being able to give individual attention to a lower caseload allows me to be more involved in patient care and see positive results faster. 3. What was your most memorable patient experience? A few years ago I treated a female patient in her early twenties who had a nerve injury occur at birth that affected her right arm from the shoulder down to her hand. She never had any treatment for it prior and presented with significant range of motion and strength deficits. Her shoulder, elbow and wrist, affecting her ability to lift and carry her young child as well as simple tasks such as hand writing. Since this injury happened at birth I was unsure how much I was going to be able to help her at that point. Over the course of 2 months, she was able to achieve a functional amount of range of motion as well as strength improvements that allowed her to take care of her child as she needed to. Both of us were unsure if PT was going to be helpful when she started and we were both so pleased with the progress she made, it just renewed my faith in the power of PT! 4. If you could be any animal, what would it be and why? I would choose a bird of some type, so that I could know what flying feels like. It would also eliminate traffic and airports from my life! In honor of my favorite team, I’ll go with an eagle. 5. If you could describe yourself in one word what would it be and why? I would describe myself as reliable, in both personal and professional relationships. My friends and family know they can depend on me if they need me, and same goes for my co-workers and patients. 6. What do you like to do in your off time, outside the clinic? My favorite thing to do outside of work is spend time with my family at my parents’ shore house in West Wildwood, NJ. It is even more special now after getting engaged there this past summer! In the off-season, I like to explore Philly’s amazingly diverse restaurant scene.

2. In your words, what makes Excel Physical Therapy different from other physical therapy clinics? I love that Excel uses a low-volume treatment model. It allows for more one-on-one time with each patient and, in my opinion, leads to better outcomes. You are able to truly listen to patient’s concerns and problems and address them accordingly. 3. What was your most memorable patient experience? My most memorable patient experiences are a collection of the different people I’ve met over my career. I try to make sessions as enjoyable as possible by getting to know each individual on a personal level. Anytime I return a patient back to their prior level of function is a great experience and always topped off when I see them outside the clinic and I am thanked for helping them.

4. If you could be any animal, what would it be and why? A dog because they are without a doubt the best animal and are always happy.

5. If you could describe yourself in one word what would it be and why? Adventurous (besides heights), I have travelled around the world by myself and I am always down for new experiences (besides bungee jumping or skydiving). 6. What do you like to do in your off time, outside the clinic? I spend a lot of time outside, working out, and traveling. I love traveling to new countries and experiencing different cultures. My favorite destinations have been Switzerland, New Zealand, and the Philippines. One of my life goals is to go to a new country every year and hopefully COVID will be under control in 2021 so I can resume my travels.
