Success of your organization depends on how much time you invest in knowing your employees

H

ave you ever watched an episode of “Under- cover Boss”? CeO’s,

that they find themselves in, and minimal appreciation for how each position and person fits neatly into the puzzle that they call their organization. Funny outtakes of raw failure bring the show it’s charm, but it is the personal discovery stories that bring many bosses to their knees. The moral of the episode is that each and every person in your organization has a story – a collection of puzzle pieces of personality, upbringing and life circumstances. The ultimate success of your organization depends on how much time you invest in know-

ing your employees and co- workers and how their pieces fit into your business puzzle. All too often we assume that the manner in which we com- municate “is what it is”. In other words, our style is fixed. We give little thought to how we might improve our ability to communicate and howwe might adapt our behavior to improve relationships with those around us. The price of failed commu- nication and unsuccessful rela- tionships can be significant. What is it worth to you and your business to increase your intuitive understanding of how to work with the fundamental personality elements that drive your workers? What is it worth to you to find out if your team’s elemental composition is skewed toward one or two of the personality elements? What an “aha” moment it be- comes when you realize that is why your results are tilted that way as well! Most personality type as- sessments today are based on the fourfold personality types. DISC, The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (R), a more recent, Director, Socializer, Thinker, Relater, or the ancient, Phleg- matic, Choleric, Sanguine and Melancholy. In each, a person has some bent and frequently some mea- sure of the other elements. While these fine assessments are academic and detailed, if you aren’t able to quickly recall and assess the elements at play in a given scenario, howwill you be able to apply it? Path elements Profile, by Laurie Beth Jones is a personal- ity assessment tool that utilizes the elements of nature - earth, Water, Wind and Fire to help teams gain insights into the values and the needs of their team members and ultimately make each team member more persuasive at getting their own needs met. The elements are fun, simple, and easy to remem- ber and apply. PeP works! It is immediately applicable in the area in which most of us live - relationships. I can’t promise that aware- ness of your own style, and the ability to recognize and adapt to others, will result in perfect relationships, but just imagine the possibilities that more ef- fective communications might bring.
