IT’S TIME TO UNPLUG

THE KONECKY JOURNAL

FEB/MAR 2023

Put Your Phone on ‘Do Not Disturb’

hen you’re out on the town, at a restaurant, driving, or spending time with your friends and family,

The more I unplug, the more I notice how many others are still plugged in — especially in my line of work. Many of my personal injury clients’ car accidents occur because the at-fault driver was distracted by their phones. It’s heartbreaking to hear how many collisions could’ve been prevented if people weren’t using them. While driving, you may see many motorists with phones in front of them or on their steering wheels. They may be going under the speed limit or swerving into different lanes as they try to multitask. But no text or post on social media is more important than paying attention to what’s happening around you on the road. I want you to know that I’m not perfect — I have moments where I want to check my phone while driving, at work, running errands, and spending time with family and friends. I struggle with trying to unplug like many of you do — it’s something that I am working on daily. One of the strategies I use to practice mindfulness, embrace silence, and unplug is through meditation. Meditating is more difficult than people think. It’s a challenge to silence your thoughts and not focus on your body’s signals. It’s hard to put into words the benefits meditation and mindfulness have. So I highly recommend you try it sometime — it will help you develop a new perspective. Like you, I still have a hard time unplugging from time to time. It’s challenging to break a habit and create a new one. But anything is possible with patience, practice, and trial and error. So, in honor of National Unplug Day on March 3, 2023, step away from your phone and live in the moment. You’d be surprised by the many benefits it has to offer.

have you noticed the increasing amount of people who have their heads buried in their phones?

While I’ve always been aware of this situation, I began to think about it more

and more after reading “Golden: The Power of Silence in a World of Noise” by Justin Zorn and Leigh Marz. This book highlights the importance of practicing mindfulness and navigating through a world full of noise.

The term “noise” refers to the constant thoughts in our minds and the items we see on social media

We have the world at our fingertips — but this power seems to be doing more harm than good.”

that consumes our attention. The authors use a combination of history, scientific studies, business practices, and spirituality to highlight how silence can impact our bodies and minds. We have the world at our fingertips, but this power seems to be doing more harm than good. Unplugging from our electronics

and silencing our lingering thoughts can benefit our physical health, provide mental clarity, create sustainability, and allow us to connect with those in our community more often. Today, I see too many people plugged into their phones, which encourages me to unplug even more. The pings, buzzing, and other alerts my phone constantly sends are too distracting. So, I decided to silence everything all together. Whatever notifications I have on my phone can wait. I would much rather connect with those around me — my team, clients, and loved ones.

Spending Valentine’s Day With the Family? TRY OUT THESE ACTIVITIES Valentine’s Day demands most of the attention in February. This holiday is designated for couples to share their love and do things they greatly enjoy together. While this usually consists of dinner dates, a movie, and possibly even some dancing, some parents have a difficult time getting away. Maybe they can’t find a babysitter, or one of the kids is ill, causing them to cancel plans. You might think there’s no point in celebrating the holiday if you can’t do so with just your significant other, but you can turn Valentine’s Day into a family-friendly event. Here are a few activities to try if you’re spending Valentine’s with the kids this February. Write love notes to each other. Valentine’s Day is all about love, so what better way to celebrate it than by sharing your love with those closest to you? This can be a fun and educational activity for your kids as you can help them with their spelling and grammar.

Have a fancy dinner.

You don’t need to go out to have an extravagant Valentine’s dinner. You can make one at home by incorporating the

same ingredients as the dishes you would get at a restaurant. Or you can order from your favorite restaurant and pick it up. Use a fancy

tablecloth, light some candles, and have fun with it. Don’t forget to include a special dessert; you can even make mocktails to amp up the fun.

Finish the night with a movie.

Valentine’s Day is often one of the busiest nights of the year for movie theaters, but you don’t have to go out to enjoy a movie during the holiday. Head to your favorite streaming service and find some family-friendly romantic comedies to watch together. “The Princess Diaries,” “Lady and the Tramp,” and “Gnomeo and Juliet” are all great options.

company to reach out to you and request a statement — they could use and hold anything you say against you. Instead of talking to them, refer them to your attorney or insurance company. Using Your Social Media Against You After an accident, most insurance companies will collect public information by going through your social media accounts looking for photos, posts, stories, comments, and locations. Nothing will hurt your case more than posting pictures when it shows your injury isn’t affecting you and your everyday life. Therefore, it’s best to refrain from posting anything that could hurt your case or to make your accounts private during the duration of your claim. However, never provide an account for the other party’s insurance provider. There is no need for the other driver’s insurance Offering Low Settlements When you first hear from an insurance company and they offer you a settlement amount, most of the time, the offer will be extremely low. Therefore, it’s crucial that you don’t accept their offer — your injuries are worth more than what they give you. They almost always offer you a fraction of what your case is actually worth. It’s best to play the waiting game and be patient when dealing with settlement offers. The longer you wait, the bigger your settlement could be (with the appropriate evidence on your side).

Brushing Up on Cruise Etiquette

ALL ABOARD! Know Your Cruise Etiquette Before Setting Sail

After a slump in 2020 and 2021, cruises are back in a big way. If you’re planning your first onboard adventure — or it’s been a while since you last set sail — now is the time to brush up on your cruise ship etiquette. Every passenger should read their cruise line’s policies to ensure they know all the specifics before climbing aboard. In the meantime, we’ve listed some of the most essential do’s and don’ts for the savvy traveler. Know what to wear. Some cruise lines aim for a fancy atmosphere, while others prefer a casual approach. Ideally, review the dress policy before you book your trip. Bring at least one formal outfit in your luggage for dinner, which tends to have an upscale vibe. The rest of your cruise wear should be casual but tasteful, leaving you looking put together. Most importantly, don’t overpack — the stateroom is smaller than you think. Don’t be a chair hog. Everyone wants a prime spot on the sundeck, but you’ve got to rise early in the morning to get one. That’s fine if you can manage it, but “saving” a seat by putting a towel on it and then wandering

away for breakfast or a mani-pedi is the best way to get on your fellow travelers’ bad side. Your cruise may also have a policy against it. Going to the bathroom is one thing; you’re only human. Otherwise, if you want the seat, stay in it. Be on time. Treat your cruise ship like an airplane — if you’re not on time, it’s probably leaving without you. And if you are lucky enough to have the ocean liner

wait, your fellow passengers won’t look at you kindly. Set your watch to ship time (not local time) and prepare to be back an hour before the deadline. That way, if you happen to be late, you’ll

still be on time. You may miss out on an extra drink or souvenir shop, but nothing will ruin your cruise faster than being left behind at the dock.
