Tasmanian Hospitality Review - December/January 2024

Workforce Development

It’s been a huge year for THA’s Workforce Development Program, headlined with the bitter-sweet retirement of former Manager Roger O’Meagher. Under Roger the WFD program continued to grow and work across the state trying to address the chronic workforce and skills issues our industry suffers from. I wish Roger all the best in his semi-retirement while he takes time to travel and focus on his family business Knocklofty - Tasmanian Small Batch Distillers (shameless plug out of the way). Across this year the WFD program has continued its strong work in schools helping to highlight a pathway into our industry and showcase the amazing opportunities that our industry can present. Through our schools’ programs alone we have worked with nearly 3000 students across 70 sessions to highlight the importance of the industry, the perks and most importantly the lifelong career pathways that exist. In doing so we continue our strong partnership with the Beacon Foundation to help prepare young people for the working world, which as we can all remember is very daunting and nerve wrecking for the first time. Participating in The Beacon Foundation’s Programs is a great way to meet young people who are looking to

work as well as a great way to help steer young people towards our industry.

This year we have also worked with 100 participants from The Migrant Resource Centre to assist migrants arriving in Tasmania with a Hospitality Readiness course to help get them up to speed to work behind your bar, or in your kitchen, while we continue our work with Advisory groups, Training Providers, Government Agencies, Intermediaries and Jobs hubs to benefit our industry. I wish everyone a safe and happy Christmas and New Year and look forward to continuing the hard work again in 2024!
