level of training per their individual need. Our goal is to help every member to reach their full potential and enjoy the sport in every aspect of it. How do you think your school different from other similar schools? First, our programs are very structured and organized, our customers tell us we run the programs like swiss watch shop. We are also very family oriented - we cater to the needs of the whole family. This starts from how the facilities are built with a convenient second floor parents lounge and a learning room where fencers and their waiting siblings study for their school and make their homework. We encourage our fencers to excel in their academics as well. Third, our approach is very individualized. No fencer is the same, even if they attend the same program. We plan the whole year as a short term with parents and also talk a lot about their fencer long term goals. These goals are reflected in the individualized approach and program we apply to the fencer. Fourth, just month ago we were recognized as Club of Excellence in Membership by the United States Fencing Association (a national governing body for fencing) - the only club to achieve this excellence in the membership category among more than 600 fencing clubs in the country (http://academyoffencingmasters.com/blog/usfa-club-of- excellence-program/). We conduct periodic meetings with par- ents where we discuss their fencer’s objectives and goals and follow their progress. And last (but not least) we provide a great deal of materi- al to our parents in particular and overall fencing community in general. Our blog - (http://academyoffencingmasters.com/blog) is considered to be top resource for parents in the United States and we estab- lished an authority in the field. We also wrote and published 3 books that help parents who are new to the fencing to navi- gate this complex field (e.g, Parents Guide to Fencing - http://academyoffencingmasters.com/parents-guide/) And of course being a competitive fencing club our fencers show great results. We have raised many medalists on the national and international level, including several medalists from last month national championship in Dallas, TX. Our fencers participate in the World Cups and Pan American Championships. At any competition at any level AFM fencers are considered to be serious contenders for the podium. Just last weekend (weekend of August 5-7) our fencers excelled in national level youth tournament in San Diego, winning a gold medal in men’s foil and bronze medals in men’s epee and women’s epee (NOTE: in fencing there are 3 weapons, foil, epee and sabre, and in AFM we teach only foil and epee. AFM is one of the top clubs in the United States, recog- nized as the Best Fencing Club in the last season by National Fencing Clubs Rankings, and awarded this year as USA Fencing Club of Excellence in Membership. In the short period of time since AFM was founded it reached top positions in the country in many categories - their fencers got medals of any color at regional, national and international levels. This is thanks to three things: 1) Their fantastic coaches that came with very rich background of raising national level fencers; 2)Their program that was created and followed to the very details at every level and that maximizes performance and potential of every student; 3) very friendly and encouraging atmosphere where kids feel safe and welcomed. Can you tell us something about yourself? My name is Irina Chirashnya and I am founder and CEO of Academy of Fencing Masters in Campbell, CA, or AFM, as we call it short. I founded AFM in summer 2013 with a vision to create a special place where children learn fencing in the great environment and reach their full potential with the sport. We created a place which kids call “the third place” after home and school and every day we see their progress. My whole family are fencers. My husband, with whom I co-founded AFM, was a competitive fencer in his youth and now all my 4 children fence. Can you tell us your philosophy and the basic premise of your school? The best way our philosophy and basic premise is described is here: http://academyoffencingmasters.com/owner/ First of all, we put a lot of attention into every detail of careful planning of every program aspect. Then we take a very individual approach to every student with providing them the A BRIEF INTERVIEW WITH THE FOUNDER IRINA CHIRASHNYA:
