The Open Arms Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporate charity and the heart of MAA. Its mission is to provide a home away from home at no cost for those who must travel to receive medical treatment. Open Arms homes are fully-furnished, two-bedroom, first- floor apartments stocked with linens, kitchen items and other miscellaneous necessities. The entire rents, along with basic utilities, are paid for by Open Arms, MAA and its generous supporters. One of the most critical parts of our Open Arms mission is our incredible referring partners, who stood at the front line throughout these past few years of a major health crisis to support patients and allowed us to do the same. We find a perfect example of this with our social work partners at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville, TN. They sent us a note earlier in 2022, expressing their appreciation for our Open Arms homes that provide temporary accommodations to stem cell donors who need a place to stay while they do their own work to save lives. “We are social workers at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center. We LOVE Open Arms,” said Kelly Owens, a Vanderbilt University Medical Center social worker. “Our patients can have forms of hematology cancer such as leukemia and lymphoma. Our transplant patients, in this case, either get their own stem cells or receive them from a donor. Half of the donors are family members, while the other half are ‘angels,’ complete strangers who are willing to try to save a life by donating to a cancer patient.”

A transplant from a stem cell donor can require as much as a 100 day stay near the hospital. As Kelly tells it, a three-month stay in a furnished apartment in Nashville, one of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas in the United States, can often cost around $12,000-$15,000. With such high costs and prices, saving on housing represents a tremendous help for both families in need and their donors. Here at Open Arms, we love working with Vanderbilt and its patients through the Open Arms Foundation! A Little Peace of Mind Being diagnosed with a life-altering illness or disease is challenging in every way. It brings unexpected hardship for the patients and their loved ones, making finding a place to stay, a process that is always stressful, an even more significant challenge. That is why the Open Arms Foundation works hard to let patients focus on their treatments while we care for the rest. By Pedro Acevedo, Internal Communications Exemplifying this was the Wood family. After learning that his wife would need a second transplant, they were both in a difficult place emotionally. Not only did they have to go through this process again, but they also had
to deal with dedicating time to finding a new apartment near the hospital, furnishing it, setting up utilities and everything else involved. All this can be a nightmare even without having a pending medical procedure. Thankfully, the family was referred to Open Arms, and we were able to help. “You helped me get an apartment last year, and I just wanted to thank you from the bottom of my heart,” said Blake Wood. “You gave us a chance to just take care of what was most important at the time, and that was just to do all we could to get my wife healthy.” Blake’s wife had a successful transplant, and today she is in remission, feeling healthy for nearly two years. “I just wanted you to know what you are doing is so special, and we feel so fortunate,” Blake concluded.

A Happy Ending
Traveling away from home for an extended period can be difficult in any circumstance, but the challenge is even bigger for patients and their families. At Open Arms, we provide a home away from home for those who must travel to receive the help they need, and we put every effort into supporting them during this time and letting them focus exclusively on getting better. This was the case for Ray Brown, MAA Accounting Systems Administrator who works in the Germantown, TN, corporate office, and his family who stayed at the MAA Nashville West community in Nashville, TN, earlier this year. During a routine scan, Ray’s family was informed that their son required a heart transplant consultation at the Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, TN. After several doctor visits, scans, and consultations, the professionals at the Vanderbilt Medical Center offered them an alternative procedure in the form of a double coronary bypass.
While the family was relieved to have this less invasive option, they were immensely stressed over the details regarding lodging in proximity to the Vanderbilt Medical complex, which can quickly add up to thousands of dollars a month. “Thanks to MAA’s Open Arms charity, our family was given the peace of mind to cross this agonizing item off our list. The apartment assigned to us after his operation offered us a respite from the tribulations of hospital life, but more importantly, a temporary yet peaceful place to call ‘home,’” said Ray. “We were also mercifully relieved of the burden to stock our living space with common items necessary for extended stays away from home.”
According to Ray, staying with Open Arms allowed his family breathing room to focus on his recovery over other everyday worries and details that would create undue stress. Today, the story has a happy ending. Ray’s son is thriving and, at the time of writing, is on track to graduate in December 2022 with his Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering. He is also looking forward to pursuing a Master of Science degree in the same field. “Our family was given the peace of mind to cross this agonizing item off our list.”

The complications of having no choice but to leave home to care for your health can reach new heights when the journey becomes international. Suddenly, you may not just leave your home or family behind, but your entire culture. Such is the case for Natalia Rivero, a Mexican citizen who has had to leave her country multiple times to receive life-saving treatment at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL. Her journey began seven years ago in her native Mexico, where she was diagnosed with lung disease and told that she would need extensive treatment and, ultimately, a lung transplant. After a lot of research, she determined that the Mayo Clinic, one of the largest health organizations in the United States, would give her one of the best chances for a successful outcome. However, her diagnosis brought along a hefty price tag, and her health insurance had depleted by the time she was ten. Thankfully, the community rallied around her and her story, and her family fundraised over a million dollars to cover treatment, a transplant and postoperative medicines. This treatment showed promise, so doctors at the clinic decided to put the transplant on hold.

That was six years ago. Today, Natalia’s health has unfortunately deteriorated, and she will need to go ahead with the lung transplant. Due to inflation and price adjustments, however, the money she raised back then would no longer be enough to cover everything, at least not including her accommodations in Jacksonville during the procedure and her recovery. Luckily, Natalia and her medical team connected with Open Arms, and she was able to be placed in a home. “I thank Open Arms with all my heart for the great opportunity. You have given us, my mother and me, a
chance to stay at this lovely apartment in Jacksonville,” said Natalia. “The help you are giving us is really valuable, as I wouldn’t be able to afford the cost of living in the US otherwise. We are deeply grateful.” Even though Natalia is currently undergoing treatment at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL, she took the time to send Open Arms a letter showing her appreciation for allowing her health, concluding with a single statement: “You are my heroes.”

By Beth Johnson, Administrative Assistant & Open Arms Representative Our Fundraising Journey We are able to serve our guests and communities each year thanks to fundraising efforts and the generous support of our donors. Large events, such as golf tournaments, topgolf nights and 5k races really boost our donation funds and situate us for success, as well as providing connection between our MAA associates, residents, and vendors. Efforts in previous years helped us ride through the storm of the COVID-19 pandemic even as various other housing programs had to close or cut back services. Current efforts continue to ensure that Open Arms guests have a home away from home as they travel for treatment for years to come. Below are a few stories from recent large events, told in the words of our wonderful event organizers. Thank you to everyone who participated in these or other community based events during 2022! On a beautiful spring morning in suburban Alpharetta, GA, on April 11, 2022, the Atlanta team of 17 volunteers hosted the 2nd Annual Open Arms Atlanta Golf Classic. A total of 136 golfers enjoyed playing the Lakeside Course amidst beautiful azaleas in bloom providing a backdrop of vibrant color for all to enjoy. After play, a delicious luncheon buffet awaited the golfers for an opportunity to 2nd Annual Open Arms Atlanta Golf Classic
dine and unwind with their peers. The Hole in One Sponsor, HD Supply, had a representative speak to the group about the importance of vendor client partnerships in business, and specifically with MAA and The Open Arms Foundation. They stated that it is a truly meaningful business relationship when a company can reach out to include vendors in support of their corporate charity. HD Supply rose to the occasion by securing the premier $25,000 Hole in One Sponsorship package for this fundraising event. We are very thankful for the vendor sponsorships each year and the commitment and interest shown in support of the Open Arms Foundation.
Awards were given to the top three teams with the lowest score, closest to the pin, and longest drive. A new award this year was also given for the team in last place to recognize the great effort given. Proceeds from the tournament totaled $162,523. Plans are underway for the 3rd Annual Open Arms Atlanta Golf Classic at The Golf Club of Georgia on April 10, 2023, and we look forward to seeing everyone there! 8th Annual Open Arms Turkey Trot 5K
The MAA Richmond/Hampton market hosted their 8th annual Open Arms Turkey Trot 5K in Richmond on November 19th. We raised over $14,000 between our participants and vendors, and our volunteer team worked very hard for several
months to make this event successful for Open Arms. Participants enjoyed the early morning run, and winners in the male and female categories for best race times won a gift card. The volunteer team spoke about Open Arms throughout the event and really drove home what our cause was and why we were hosting the event. Fairy Tale 5k Dash
We hosted our 2nd Open Arms Fairy Tale 5K Dash at Al Lopez Park in Tampa, FL, on November 19, 2022. It was a beautiful, sunny morning and we couldn’t have asked for more perfect weather. Many residents, runners, walkers, sponsorship teams and MAA associates came out to support our event (we even had a few pups attend)! The Open Arms committee made up of 10 MAA associates and led by Property Manager, Barbara Bulnes, dedicated their time all year preparing for the 5K. Our last 5K was hosted in 2019, prior to the pandemic, so it was wonderful to all be together again to support this amazing charity. We hosted the 5K in a popular park this year, so many bystanders expressed interest in us, and it was great to educate others about the Open Arms Foundation.
Our theme this year was “Fairy Tales“ and we all wore tiaras, beads, and tutus in bright colors to create positive energy and excitement! Tables were decorated as well with beads and balloons, and we offered breakfast and goodie bags for everyone after the race. We had a total of 54 registered participants and 41 runners, and we appreciated each one of them. Each runner received a T-shirt and 5K medal for completing the race. We cheered everyone through the finish line and had special 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place medals for our top 3 runners. We danced to pop music by our favorite DJ and made announcements thanking our participants, MAA associates, volunteers, and sponsors for their time and contributions. Our top 2 Queen’s Crown sponsors were House of Floors and Ally Turnkey. The Princess Sword sponsors were Sherwin Williams and Watermark. Princess Tiara sponsors were ARD and DNA. Proceeds from the 5K event totaled over $16,000 and we plan to have our next 5K in March of 2024. It is very heartwarming to see the teams, residents and communities all come together to support Open Arms. Helping others and having a heart for those in need is a wonderful feeling. We are so fortunate to have the

West Division Open Arms Annual Golf Tournament
This event is so special, and is looked foward to by so many in the Dallas and Austin area. It’s a time where we come together and raise money for our beloved charity. It tugs at our heart strings to watch our vendors, residents and employees give so graciously to our Open Arm’s families in need. Everyone waits in line for an arm’s length worth of tickets for their chance to win prizes later, then heads to the table to check out the goodies and gather their supplies for the day. We talk about Open Arms and the impact these attendees have on so many! It’s a day filled with laughter, joy and selfless giving! It’s a day so many look forward to each and every year! 3rd Annual North Division Open Arms Auction
During the pandemic, it was very challenging to raise money for Open Arms without our typical get togethers, so Lauren Hartstern, Property Manager from MAA Acklen West, and I came up with the idea for the online auction. In 2020, we launched our first auction using 32auctions.com. We reached out to local vendors, friends, and co-workers for support and
the donations started rolling in. We just wrapped up our third annual auction and we were just shy of our goal of $10,000. We raised $9,100. This was our best year yet and it would not have been possible without support from our North Division Auction committee members, especially Lauren and Katherine Morrow,

4th Annual DC/MD/VA Topgolf Event
The DC Region chose to host our event at Topgolf for the 4th year. We have had great turn outs previous years and were excited to put together another successful event. We started off strong with more sponsorships this year from our fantastic vendors; many were returning sponsors, but also had
a few new vendors sign up to donate. The vendors are always enthusiastic about our event and helping a wonderful cause! Between ticket costs and vendor sponsors, we collected over $35,000.
We had a turnout of 60 people including MAA associates, MAA residents, and vendors. Topgolf was able to provide a buffet dinner, drinks, and dessert for our event. All of our participants enjoyed three hours of game play, food and time to socialize. There was also an opportunity to win $10,000 at the “Hole in One” bay. Each player had
2 shots to get their ball in the center hole with a cup for the cash prize. An additional shot could be purchased for $20, which added to the donations to Open Arms. Although no one won, the anticipation and enthusiasm were there for everyone to try! Ultimately, it was a fun Friday night out to play Topgolf, while supporting Open Arms! 6th Annual Open Arms October
Even though Open Arms is the heart of MAA every month, we designate October as “Open Arms October” to promote awareness for the Open Arms Foundation and offer fun ways for associates, residents, friends, and family to get involved with the MAA corporate charity. This year’s event was the 6th annual, and it did not disappoint! By Beth Johnson, Administrative Assistant & Open Arms Representative
Week 1 of October highlighted an awareness and MAA payroll contribution drive. Supporters were encouraged to view the many ways Open Arms has a presence online, including the www.maaopenarms.com website, giving site and the Open Arms Facebook page, which welcomed several new followers. MAA associates also learned how to enroll in a payroll contribution to donate to Open Arms. By month end, nearly 500 MAA associates were supporting Open Arms in this way. During Week 1, associates were also encouraged to view several video tours of Open Arms homes that were filmed by MAA community management teams. This was a great way to sneak a peek at exactly what we are providing to our guests and to see how our teams put their personal spin on home decor. During Week 2, MAA communities started their “pumpkin patches” by creatively displaying support pumpkins donors purchased to help Open Arms. Pumpkins continued to sell throughout October and added a meaningful touch to fall decor in leasing offices, as well as an opportunity for a conversation starter about Open Arms and the homes we provide to those who must travel for medical treatment. One MAA community, The Fairways in Columbia, SC, sold 2,020 support pumpkins total!

Hundreds of community-based events took place during Week 3 of Open Arms October. MAA community teams and residents, as well as many generous vendors, participated in a wide range of fun fundraisers, such as pet costume contests, silent auctions, bake sales, movie nights and more! The final week of October was all about the ways to give back to Open Arms while shopping. Supporters were informed how to use AmazonSmile.com or Kroger Community Rewards to earn donation dollars for the Open Arms Foundation. In October alone, 342 purchases were made through AmazonSmile, and 618 total customers were signed up to support

Open Arms through the shopping platform. Programs like these, also known as passive fundraisers, bring consistent financial support to Open Arms throughout the year and shoppers incur no additional cost – a big win for everyone! As October came to an end, so did our beloved month- long event, but many heartfelt memories were made. MAA teams used their spark and competitive edge to help raise over $45,000 throughout the month while also taking care of their communities and residents. The Open Arms Foundation would like to thank everyone who participated in the 6th Annual Open Arms October. We could not provide a home to our many guests without you!
