T he mental health of African American men is deeply impacted by historical and current experiences of trau- ma and violence, which often characterizes their lives in America. A study funded by the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) found that news coverage and legal decisions related to anti-Black violence are linked with poor mental health among this population. Not only do the events them- selves cause trauma, but the individual’s perception and experience of these events also significantly influence their mental health. High-profile incidents of police vi- olence and systemic racism, such as the unjust killing of George Floyd, have been identified as significant factors damaging the mental health of African American men. Research indicates an increase in poor mental health days during weeks when multiple incidents of an- ti-Black violence occur. Regrettably, instead of receiving necessary mental health care, African American men experiencing mental health issues are often stigmatized and criminalized.
