WHY FIX WHAT BUGS YOU?
Recently, I’ve asked team members to show me an example of “fixing something that bugged you.”
satisfaction, creates more efficiency, and increases safety , as illustrated by the previous examples. In both cases, the jobs not only became easier, but they also became
In McCall, doorshop team member CJ Firkins explained his “buggy” problem. The bar clamps kept falling, which meant an ongoing cycle of kicking them, picking them back up, and leaning them back up in the corner. Tired of the irritation, CJ decided to stop, take a moment, think about it, and fix it! You can see his ingenious solution here.
safer! CJ and other members of his team are not tripping over clamps anymore. Pocatello drivers now have much more visibility to what is behind their trailer and what is coming down that street. So, do you dislike a particular task because it’s more complicated than it needs to be? Is there a process that seems way too cumbersome? Don’t just put up with it; let’s fix it! Talk with your supervisor; talk with your coworkers. Grab a whiteboard, and sit down with the rest of your team in a morning huddle. What bugged you yesterday? What’s frustrated you lately? (It can’t be someone’s name!) We do not have to keep doing things the same way! Make a list of all the things that bug you and the team. Prioritize the list. What’s the easiest to fix with the biggest payout? Begin there and work down. At FBS, we’ll pay you while you improve your workspace, department, location, region, or even the entire company. As you’re creating solutions, remember what Jeff Ward has taught us. Our ideas must pass the three-step funnel test: 1. Does your idea actually make anything more dangerous? If it does, go back to the drawing board. 2. Does your idea reduce quality? Again, if this is the case, keep looking for the win-win. 3. Does your idea reduce or add waste down the line? For example, your solution may reduce waste for your task, but it adds waste or makes it more difficult for the next person. If this is the case, you may need to rethink the idea. But if your idea passes the funnel test, let’s implement it. FBS wants all of us to get better, more efficient, and safer, so let’s continue to fix what bugs us! Be purposeful in fixing the “buggy” things so your job can become more enjoyable, rewarding, and most importantly, SAFER!
Likewise, our drivers in Pocatello also had a “buggy” problem. As most people know or imagine, driving our big trucks/trailers through busy neighborhoods and on and off job sites can get tricky fast, especially when backing out a 5-ton or a semi-trailer onto the street. You can’t always see everything. The guys came up with a creative solution. Pocatello bought magnetic cameras that you can place on the back of your trailer. Also, do you want to see oncoming traffic from the side? Put your camera on the side of your trailer to see what’s coming.
Ingenious! Right?
Fixing what bugs you is the easiest way to begin and gain momentum with 6S. Not sure what your next step with LEAN should be? Start again with what bugs you. Franklin Building Supply is different! We want you and everyone at FBS to enjoy their job. We also know that fixing what bugs you leads to better job

to learn by asking questions and tackling any estimating task. And although sometimes her role can get tough, she is not one to back down and completes her tasks. She really has learned the “ropes” of her role in the time she has been with the company. Very noteworthy example of striving.” Safe From: Juan Carlos Rodriguez, Caldwell To: Tommy Tristan, Caldwell Truss
Easy From: Eric Heiden, Burley To Kelly Gehret, Burley
“I somehow misplaced one of the scanning guns while helping at the front counter. As soon as Kelly found out, he had me take his scan gun and hook it up at the front counter. Kelly’s always been a real team player.”
Wow From: Ben Thomas, McCall To: Skyler Bateman, McCall
“On Aug. 31, 2023, we received three near-misses from Tommy Tristan from our Caldwell Truss Dept. This is a good example of having a good eye for safety. It is very important and awesome when an individual is aware and reports them to the team immediately so it can be addressed and brought up in our huddles. Mr. Tristan shows he cares for his team and his situational awareness is sharp. This individual is part of that culture we are encouraging others to follow and fortify. Tommy and our leadership team took these near misses and addressed them in their afternoon huddle to make sure the proper steps were being taken and what the follow-up was going to be to stay on top of the situation. All-around kudos to you all. We want our teams and coaches to understand that when it comes to safety, we need to care for each other, just like we do our families at home. Let’s keep striving to keep every individual safe and continue to motivate each other to report near-misses and push to be the best in the industry. Boosting morale will make a difference and a stronger impact on our teams. Tommy, we are lucky to have you as part of our team. Keep up the good work. You all rock!”
“Skyler went above and beyond to protect a large and very expensive timber order from the elements. I’m happy he took such care that we don’t have to worry about it getting wet or damaged. Thanks, Skyler!” Guide From: Marcus Dennison, Pocatello To: Izaiah Dustin, Pocatello “Big thanks to Marcus for reminding me to have my ear protection before entering production.”
Strive From: Dave Cuanas, Caldwell To: Patty McDonel, Caldwell
“I would like to give a big High Five and shoutout to Patty McDonel (Window Estimator). She has come a long way since she first started. Her striving to learn every day is a delight to see. She is always willing
BECOME A BLUE STAR SAFETY LOCATION Will You Be Next?
BLUE STAR SAFETY LOCATION
In our continuing journey to become a World Class Safety Organization, we have adopted the DuPont Bradley Curve as our road map. The 2026 Vision for World Class Safety requires all locations and major departments to reside in the Interdependent section of the DuPont Bradley Curve. This year, we kicked off a program to recognize locations when they reach this distinguished level. We designated Jerome Truss and Caldwell Store and Yard as Self-Directed Safety and Continuous Improvement Locations. To make this more exciting, we have decided to call these and future locations “Blue Star Safety Locations.” So, how do you become a Blue Star Safety Location? The criteria are based on Safety and Continuous Improvement proficiency. First, how does your location handle injuries?
This is for both first-aid injuries and those who need medical help. Are you reporting all injuries, no matter how slight? Are you doing everything possible for an injured employee? Second, all members of your team participate in continuous Improvement activities. You should have submissions to the SCI Workshop to share with other locations. Your location should have visual and active tracking of LEAN activities. Third, all members of your supervisory staff understand and can coach in safety compliance issues. Mock OSHA Audits are performed, and managers are open to receiving safety issues. Fourth, there is a culture where employees feel safe in reporting problems, and their managers are responsive to fixing those problems. Finally, all members of the Management/Supervisory Staff promote a World Class Safety Culture. This includes holding regular Tour Ready Audits and fixing
issues brought up in those audits. The Dupont Bradley Curve is prominently displayed throughout your location and members of your team understand how the curve relates to our achieving World Class Safety status, thus getting us to our 2026 Safety Vision! All that is left now is finding out who will be the next Blue Star Safety Location recipient! Will it be you?

In the Spotlight
An Integral Part of Our Team for 2 Years and Counting Meet Our Valued Caldwell Team Member Chris Mhire
We take great pride in the exceptional individuals who call Franklin Building Supply home. Chris Mhire has been integral to our family for the past two years. Stationed at our Caldwell, Idaho location, he puts in a lot of hard work and long hours. Chris is a window technician — he diagnoses functional and operational issues and uses precision and accuracy to make the necessary repairs or adjustments for our clients. As you can imagine, measuring and cutting glass isn’t simple; you must be spot-on, or you risk starting over. But Chris is the guy for the job, and he gets it right the first time around. His commitment to accuracy is unwavering, and he approaches each job with determination to achieve perfection for our customers. Chris enjoys the opportunity for something new daily, an aspect of his job he wholeheartedly cherishes.
Chris takes LEAN, a set of five principles designed to enhance workplace efficiency, to heart. These principles encompass defining value, mapping the value stream, creating flow, utilizing a pull system, and striving for perfection. He
seamlessly incorporates these principles into his daily routine to swiftly and more efficiently complete tasks. As he puts it, sometimes, the solution is as simple as just experimenting with a different or new tool. However, Chris’ dedication extends beyond the workplace. He emphasizes enjoying his job and fostering relationships and camaraderie with colleagues. Furthermore, he takes pride in supporting his wife in her career. When Chris isn’t at work, he enjoys exploring the great outdoors and staying active. He has fun camping, canoeing, fishing, and hiking. Chris, we are truly grateful to have you as an invaluable part of our team, and we look forward to the continued growth and positive impact we will achieve together! We appreciate you!
