The Extra Mile Advantage REASONS TO EMBRACE EXCELLENCE IN EVERY ENDEAVOR
Extraordinary people do extraordinary things. Rather than being content to follow in other people’s footsteps, they always go a step further. Extra Mile Day on Nov. 1 extolls the virtues of giving our all to everything we do and never settling for “good enough.” Going above and beyond is particularly crucial for people who own businesses. An entrepreneur’s reputation is on the line, and doing the bare minimum won’t help them retain clients. Personalizing the work and giving people more than they expect often leads to loyalty — one of a small business’s most powerful forms of currency. But employees can also find many benefits in going the extra mile. A 2022 study by LiveCareer found that people who go beyond the call of duty at work often do so because it helps them feel passionate about their work and, in turn, makes their work meaningful. Those who raise the bar also tend to get noticed by management. They’re unlikely to be let go during layoffs and more likely to be promoted
to positions that require responsibility. Further, doing more than is required involves anticipating the needs and wants of others. That generates empathy, which helps us form connections that are fulfilling. Meanwhile, the metaphorical extra mile provides many other benefits in our personal lives. Stepping up to help those we care about is one of the best ways to strengthen relationships. While some worry about being taken advantage of, the benefits outweigh the risks. Different studies have found that generosity brightens our mood, decreases stress, and even improves our life expectancy. Going the extra mile is one of the most surefire ways to show you care about something. And when a task is getting you down, giving it your all can quickly change your outlook and attitude. In other words, going above and beyond isn’t only about other people; it’s often its own reward.

The Unseen Weight of Clutter
HOW TO LIGHTEN THE LOAD ON LOVED ONES
My father-in-law, God rest his soul, was a teenager during World War II. Like many others who lived through those terrible times of scarcity, he saved every item that might someday be reusable or valuable, from string to old car parts, nuts, bolts, billing statements, trinkets, airplane propellers, and magazines. Ultimately, he found himself unable to part with anything, and the house became a museum. He died about 10 years ago. My mother-in- law spent the next several years re-living memories and, from time to time, clearing out as much as she could part with. She found solace in the freed-up space she managed to find, but her efforts weren’t enough to make much of a dent. Now, this fun-loving, vibrant 92-years-young woman
is in an assisted living apartment, free of clutter. Since moving to her apartment, my husband, their only living child, has been “blessed” with the task of clearing out the remaining stuff in the house, which is, thankfully, almost complete. But while I cannot truly relate to the mindset of people like my father-in-law, I have seen the effect “hoarding” has on families through my work as a probate administration and estate planning attorney. Sometimes, family members voice their desire to possess specific items after their parents pass, but generally, they don’t. That leaves them rummaging through closets, boxes, and basements to sort valuables from everyday stuff and reliving memories, good and bad.
In your estate planning, I encourage you to consider what effect your passing will have on your family. Consider gifting certain items during your life to those who appreciate them or put a Letter of Instruction with your will or trust that identifies personal items and who you would like to have them. Putting your wishes in writing will reduce your concerns about your belongings to which you are attached and will likely serve to alleviate ambiguity, disagreements, and stress that may arise within your family during the probate process. -Alysoun Eversole

THE VALUE OF TITLE INSURANCE Every home purchase comes with piles of paperwork and a seemingly endless list of fees. Title insurance is one of the many standard costs the buyer has to cover, but the concept is relatively foreign to people outside the real estate industry. So, what do you get for your money? against future claims that could arise. Misfiled paperwork or misspelled names can hide defects in title, and long-lost heirs occasionally come out of the woodwork years later to claim ownership interests in the property, which may or may not be valid.
WHY THE FEE IS WORTH YOUR MONEY
take out loans or sell the home to another unsuspecting victim and walk away with the money, leaving the financial fallout for the unsuspecting victims to deal with. Title fraud insurance can be obtained but is not offered at the closing on a purchase. At a minimum, as an owner, you should periodically search public records at the Register of Deeds Office for documents that would reveal if someone has, or is attempting to, steal your property. Beaufort County offers a Property Alert Service that, once you have registered, gives you alerts when documents are recorded with matching names. Few homes ever have title claims made against them. Most people also never experience a devastating car accident or house fire, but we still insure against these possibilities because the benefit of doing so outweighs the cost. A one-time payment for title insurance will protect you for a lifetime of homeownership, and you forgo it at your own peril.
When a hidden title defect arises, in the best-case scenario, it causes a lot of stress and may take time, and without title insurance, legal fees to resolve the matter. Without title insurance, an owner could lose the house they purchased and every investment they’ve put into it. With title insurance, you can pay off any newly discovered liens that predate the closing, provide cash settlements to people making claims to the property, and cover any associated legal costs. Title insurance does not, however, cover title fraud, a new form of cybercrime. Because of digitization, criminals create and file fake documents, transferring titles out of the owners’ names. The thieves fraudulently use the owner’s identity, then
A house’s title refers to legal ownership of the property. Before providing financing for a home, the mortgage company ensures the seller has a legal right to sell the house, and the buyer has the legal right to purchase it. They hire a title company to perform a title search, checking for any “clouds” or problems with a title, like a lien or a mortgage on the house, an unbroken chain of title, or other defects in the chain of title such as taking title through forgery or fraud that predates the closing on the property, or title is conveyed to the buyer through fraud or forgery.
Despite this initial search, homeowners should purchase title insurance to protect

Mayo Magic: The Secret to Juicy Thanksgiving Turkey
The turkey undoubtedly takes center stage among the many culinary delights that grace the Thanksgiving table. While there are plenty of methods for cooking a turkey, many chefs and home cooks swear by the “mayo method” as the best way to achieve a moist and flavorful Thanksgiving turkey — here’s why! Moisture Lock One of the biggest challenges when roasting a turkey is maintaining its moisture. The mayo method involves slathering the turkey with a layer of mayonnaise before roasting. Because mayonnaise contains oil, it helps lock in moisture during cooking, resulting in a juicy and tender turkey. Flavor Infusion If you’re a mayo lover, you’ll agree it’s delicious! While it gives the turkey a subtle and rich flavor, the result doesn’t taste
like mayonnaise at all! (Mayo haters can breathe a sigh of relief.)
Even Browning Applying mayonnaise to the turkey creates an even and beautiful browning effect on the skin. This enhances the visual appeal and contributes a succulent and slightly crispy texture. Spice Kick Don’t worry — you’re not using only mayonnaise on your turkey. The mayo method serves as an excellent base for your choice of seasonings. You can create your own mixture before applying it to the turkey. Thyme, parsley, garlic powder, sage, cayenne, and rosemary are all great options. Simple Preparation The mayo method streamlines your preparation process — here’s what to do:
•
Allow your turkey to thaw. Create your custom mayonnaise by mixing it with your seasonings of choice. Dry the turkey with paper towels and season it with salt and pepper. Gently separate the skin from the bird and slide in cubes of butter. Rub the entire turkey with your mayonnaise mixture, inside and out. Bake at 450 F for 30 minutes. Then lower the temperature to 325 F and cook for 15 minutes per pound.
