And the last thing to consider before the demands of harvest is how you plan to plant the cover crop. If you are planting it yourself, it’s time to inventory what machinery you have to plant seeds in an orchard. Small seeds like the Pollinator Brassica mix can often be planted with an ant bait applicator or a relatively inexpensive broadcaster and a light drag, while larger seeds like the Nitro Builder are better planted with a seed drill. Small seeds can be planted with a seed drill as well with some calibration. Now is also the time to locate machinery or a custom planter in your area if you decide to hire someone to plant your cover crop. Locating and scheduling a custom planter now is easier than setting up a last- minute appointment in October or November. Your neighbors or your consultant may know custom planters or have planting machinery, so now is the time to ask around. Whether you are just beginning to use a cover crop or you are a veteran practicer, taking a few minutes this summer to plan ahead could save you hours of stress this fall.
