Your Guide to a Picture-Perfect North Georgia Lake Weekend Ready for One More Summer Escape?

Blackout Boredom? Not in This House When the Power Goes Out, the Memories Begin Whether it’s because of a severe storm or a damaged power line, the moment the power goes out often elicits a collective groan from the whole family. No Wi-Fi, no television, and disrupted routines. Sure, it’s a little inconvenient, but it’s also an excuse to hit pause on the ordinary and turn the night into something unexpectedly fun. Without screens or distractions, what you have left is a house full of possibilities. BUILD A FORT WORTH BRAGGING ABOUT. Grab every blanket, pillow, and cushion you can find, because it’s fort time. Turn your living room into the ultimate hideout and give everyone a flashlight for full “adventure mode.” Explore the “unknown” (yes, even the spooky basement), create shadow puppet shows, or tell spooky stories. It’s camping (minus the bugs). GET CRAFTY (OR A LITTLE MESSY). No power? Perfect time to break out the creative side. Draw, paint, fold paper into tiny origami masterpieces, or finally try that craft project you’ve been putting off. Make it a family challenge: Who can create the most ridiculous, beautiful, or totally random artwork? START A FAMILY JAM SESSION. Who needs electricity when you’ve got rhythm? Pull out instruments if you have them or improvise with whatever’s nearby. Pots, pans, claps, and voices all count. Turn it into a mini concert or talent show and let everyone take the stage. HOST AN OLD-SCHOOL GAME NIGHT. Dust off a deck of cards or a favorite board game, and let the competition begin. Add snacks and maybe a little candlelight, and suddenly you’ve got a cozy, memory-making kind of night. No notifications, no interruptions: just good, old-fashioned fun (and maybe a little friendly rivalry). STEP OUTSIDE FOR A LITTLE COSMIC MAGIC. If the sky’s clear, head outside and look up. With the neighborhood lights out, the stars tend to steal the show. Stretch out on a blanket, find constellations (or random shapes) in the sky, or just enjoy the quiet. It’s surprisingly peaceful and kind of magical for the little ones. DISCOVER UNDERCOVER QUALITY TIME. Funny enough, power outages have a way of bringing everyone together. You talk more, laugh more, and connect in ways that don’t usually happen during a normal, plugged-in day. So, the next time the lights go out, don’t groan, lean in. You might just end up having more fun than you expected.

As Atlanta’s summer heat lingers and the calendar inches toward fall, there’s

still time for one last memorable getaway. Just a few hours north,

sparkling lakes, mountain views, and refreshing outdoor adventures offer the perfect antidote to rising temperatures. Whether you’re craving a peaceful

day on the water or a family weekend filled with fun, North Georgia’s lakes provide the perfect setting to soak up every last moment of summer.

LAKE NOTTELY, BLAIRSVILLE Lake Nottely is a hidden gem with more than 100 miles of shoreline. Built in 1942 by the Tennessee Valley Authority, the lake is known for its peaceful atmosphere, swimming beach, campground, marinas, and public boat ramps. After a day on the water, head into downtown Blairsville and stop by Hole in the Wall, a beloved local restaurant serving hearty biscuits since 1931. Nearby wineries and horseback riding stables make it easy to turn a day trip into a full weekend escape. LAKE CHATUGE, HIAWASSEE If stunning mountain scenery is what you’re after, Lake Chatuge delivers. Straddling the Georgia-North Carolina border, this popular destination boasts more than 130 miles of shoreline framed by the Blue Ridge Mountains. Visitors can enjoy boating, kayaking, waterskiing, swimming, and fishing, or simply relax at the Towns County Recreational Beach. Be sure to visit Bell Mountain Park, which offers breathtaking 360-degree views. LAKE RABUN, LAKEMONT Nestled in Rabun County, Lake Rabun feels like stepping into a simpler time. Adventurers can explore nearby zip lining, horseback riding, and fly-fishing opportunities, while nature lovers should make time for the short hike to Minnehaha Falls, one of North Georgia’s most photographed waterfalls. For an overnight stay, charming accommodations like the Lake Rabun Hotel or The Barn at Lake Rabun add to the area’s timeless appeal. LAKE BLUE RIDGE, BLUE RIDGE For those seeking pristine natural beauty, Lake Blue Ridge is hard to beat. Surrounded by the Chattahoochee National Forest, it remains one of Georgia’s most unspoiled lakes. Visitors can rent kayaks, paddleboards, pontoon boats, and other watercraft, relax on the pebble beach at Morganton Point, or enjoy the easy Lake Blue Ridge Loop Trail. Many visitors choose to stay longer by camping lakeside or renting one of the area’s cozy cabins. As summer’s final weeks slip away, these North Georgia destinations offer the perfect excuse to unplug, enjoy the outdoors, and create a few more warm-weather memories before autumn arrives.
