Lacrosse in the middle of winter

FRANCIS RACINE francis.racine@eap.on.ca

CORNWALL | Children will be able to warm up to the exciting sport of lacrosse through an upcoming winter skills pro- gram at the Benson Centre’s indoor field house. The Cornwall Minor Lacrosse Association is offering its annual ‘lacrosse boot camp’ for children ages 5 – 12, which began on February 4. Lead by former Cornwall Celtic player Kyle Pichie, the program is designed to maximize development of the sport and increase player agility. For younger participants, the program serves as a great introduction to the sport. Learning the unique skills and abilities that are required to play lacrosse takes time and practice; so to master them, it’s a great idea

to begin at a young age. Without the proper techniques, a player may find their short- comings can limit their effectiveness and ability to advance in the game. Teaching a strong foundation in the fun- damentals of lacrosse is something the players can take with them for as long as

they play. The program runs on Tuesday evenings from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., from Febru- ary 4 until April 9. In addition, those who register for the summer season during February will have a chance to win 1 of 2 Reebok 10K lacrosse sticks or a free registration!

THE JOURNAL JCORNWALL@EAP.ON.CA Get W.I.T.H. It! returns to Civic Complex

(UOHI), Heart and Stroke Foundation and the City of Cornwall to offer Get W.I.T.H. It!, an acronym that stands for Walking in the Halls. The free walking program takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the concourse of the Civic Complex and is open to all. Through the program, residents can continue to exercise while escaping the colder, darker winter months and possibly win some prizes. In addition to exercising in

a comfortable venue, the program provides a monitored environment, with Health Centre staff, volunteers and community partners on hand during program times. The Get W.I.T.H. It! walking program encourages everyone to participate, but it is particularly geared toward those who are concerned about their heart health. The program is designated by the University of Ottawa Heart Institute as a Heart Wise Exercise Program. This means that it meets the 6 criteria established by the Heart Institute when it began to create programs for people who are battling heart disease. For more information about the program, please contact Corrie D’Alessio at 613 930- 4892 ext. 152.
