Eager Faces Turn

If some one supplied with one-dollar bills had stood on the shore of Europe and thrown a dollar bill into the Atlantic Ocean every minute since the birth of Jesus Christ, he would only have disposed of what the United States expended during one year of the World War.—C. H. C. III. W ho C ould F ire ? In the Great War, the French and Ger man armies lay opposite each other in northern France, with a little space be tween, where stood a farmhouse and its surrounding fields. The firing began briskly on both sides, but suddenly ceased. In the yard before the farmhouse there tottered— a baby! It plucked at a yellow dandelion, missed it, clutched again, succeeded, and burst into crowing laughter. And about the baby there descended peace. Who could fire at the risk of’ even frightening a laugh ing baby? Then a German soldier threw down his gun, climbed out of the trench, ran across the field and picked up the baby, carried it over to the French line, and returned to his place. And on both sides broke out a great cheer. It must have been hard to begin firing again. Not much could have been achieved by either side at that spot that morning. What a pity that the ruling powers responsible for the war could not have trained imaginations to see the hordes of smiling children that their firing would destroy! What a great day of peace that will be when all of us . . . see before us the smiling face of the Babe of Bethlehem, the Prince of Peace!— S elected . But God, who knows the deceitfulness of the human heart, warned Moses of this danger, and provided a safeguard against it. Moses was the greatest statesman and lawgiver that this world has produced. God endowed him with heavenly prudence that he might lay the foundation for righteous judgment. Listen to the words which the Lord spoke through His servant to those who should judge Israel: “ Hear the causes between your brethren, and judge righteously between every man and his brother, and the stranger that is with him. Ye shall not respect persons in judg ment; but ye shall hear the small as well äs the great; ye shall not be afraid of the, face of man; for the judgment is God’s.” In that last clause lies the secret of im partial, unprejudiced judgment; God alone is able to discriminate between sham and reality. Solomon reiterated God’s ancient law of judgment when he said: “ It is not good to have respect of persons in judgment” (Prov. 24:23). Emphasizing the fact that
