That Roman spear point driven into the very heart of the Son of God tells out the wickedness of the heart of man, but that cleansing blood rushing forth to wash away our sins tells how God has loved us, how wonderfully the grace of God has abounded over all our sins. We who sometimes were far off—we poor, wretched Gentiles, alienated from God' by wicked works, and enemies in our minds, have now, by putting our trust in Him, been brought into a place of nearness that the law coul^ never give even to Jews, and the Jew who believes in Him has been brought into this same blessed place. T o gether we have been “made nigh by the blood of Christ.”—H. A. I ronside . “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law” (Gal. 5:22, 23). The graces of the Spirit ought to be richly revealed in our lives; the power of the Spirit ought to be mightily mani fested in our work. It is the privilege of every believer to be a man of power in service. Grace and power are both at our disposal; grace for living like Christ, and power in working for Him.—R. A. T orrey . The gentleness of Christ is the costliest ornament that a Christian can wear. — S elected . The unfailing and unfainting hopeful ness of Jesus Christ may shame us out of our discouragement while following Him as “fellow workers unto the kingdom of God.” . . . If He had spoken as we so often speak, and felt as we so often feel; if He, seeing how small His success was, had folded His weary hands and given up the conflict, what then? And what was His review of His life when almost done? “ I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.” That was all, but that was enough. Can any of us wish to be able to say more?—G. H. K n ig h t . “ Hitherto hath the Lord helped us” (1 Sam. 7:12). “ Thou hast been my help; leave me not, neither forsake me, O God of my salvation” (Psa. 27:9). When our souls are much discouraged By the roughness of the way, And the cross we have to carry, Seemeth heavier every day; NOVEMBER 6 Fruitful Faithfulness "And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season w e shall reap, if we faint nof’ (Gal. 6:9). NOVEMBER 1 Our Good Shephard

"H e healeth the broken in heart, and *bindeth up their wounds’’ (Psa. 147:3). He tenderly binds up the broken in heart; The soul bowed down He will raise: For mourning, the ointment of joy will impart ; For heaviness, garments of praise. Ah, come, then, and sing to the praise of our God, Who giveth and taketh away; Who first by His kindness, and then by his rod, Would teach us, poor sinners, to pray. For in the assembly of Jesus’ first-born, Who anthems of gratitude raise, Each heart has by great tribulation been torn, Each voice turned from wailing to praise. — R obert M u r r a y M c C h e y n r . " l know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day” (2 Tim. 1:12). Are you sure? The longer I live, the more deeply it seems to me that this is the greatest thing of all: by repentant trust in the blood of His cross, by the consequent inner witness of the Holy Spirit, by con sistent willingness to be ruled and swayed in everything by Him, just to keep in view that glorious, ever-shining Light, the Light that shineth more and more unto the per fect day. May God keep us quite, quite sure about this, and about Him! — -G eoffrey R. K in g . “ 1 pray for them: 1 pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine” (John 17:9). The high-priestly prayer of our Lord, in John 17, carries a burden for the church’s separation and sanctification. The church is in the world, but not of it. Because of this fact, there is a great gulf fixed in re spect of the countenance of worldly ways and methods of support. The church must have heavenly food for the sustenance of its heavenly life. Taken out of the world, it must be distinct from all worldliness, and a constant witness to the better world to come.— H erbert L ockyer . NOVEMBER 2 Certainty NOVEMBER 3 Separation
