COASTAL PEARL Living GRATITUDE JOURNAL

“When gratitude fills your heart, abundance follows without effort.”

PUBLISHER’S note

As the year draws to a close, I nd myself reecting on the things that truly matter, the people who make life meaningful, the moments that connect us, and the simple grace of gratitude. e holidays have a way of pulling us back to center, reminding us to slow down, look around, and take stock of what we have, not what we’ve lost or what we’re chasing, but what’s right here in front of us. is season always brings me back to family. To the faces around the table, to old stories told for the hundredth time, and to the quiet comfort of being with people who know you best. ere’s something grounding about that, about realizing that even as life changes, some things stay beautifully constant.

As we move into the holidays, I hope you’ll take time to look up from the noise, to appreciate the hands you hold, the stories you share, and the simple peace that comes from knowing you’ve done your best this year. From my family to yours, thank you for being part of this community. Wishing you a season lled with warmth, reection, and the kind of gratitude that lasts well beyond the holidays.

Coastal Pearl Living - Gratitude

R Research continually points to the benefits of families spending time together, particularly in regard to how such time benefits children. Researchers note family time decreases the likelihood of behavioral issues in children and increases the chances family units grow stronger. A 2023 study published in Frontiers in Psychology found time spent with parents is a crucial factor in the growth of children, and fostering children’s well-being and academic performance. And a recent Pew Research Center survey found 73 percent of adult respondents rate spending time with family as one of the most important things to them. FAMILY BONDING Scholar’s Choice, a Canadian distributor of educational toys, teaching materials and more, says children from families who maintain strong lines of communication through interactions like family game nights or dinners enjoy the benefits of expanded vocabularies, higher reading scores, more school motivation, better relationships with peers, and a more positive perception of the parent-child relationship. ESTABLISH STRONGER EMOTIONAL CONNECTIONS Game nights help develop memories that foster stronger emotional connections between family members. All of the wins, losses, unexpected twists, and amazing moves become a part of the family fabric. These are memories that everyone can look back on through the years. STRONGER ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE Certain games promote the development of skills that are useful in kids’ academic careers. Research from Carnegie Mellon shows that even a small amount of time spent playing academic games can lead to improved results in the classroom. LEARN TO SOLVE PROBLEMS Kids who practice strategizing and problem solving with their parents or other adults can develop better memory techniques and be more successful at solving problems on their own, according to researchers from the University of Florida.

PRACTICING PATIENCE Games help everyone around the table practice being patient with one another. Waiting turns, handling setbacks and strategizing throughout the game are all lessons in building patience that comes from family game night. Playing games can help enhance a child’s ability to manage frustration and develop resilience, too. Family game nights get everyone together in an entertaining way and help build memories and foster skills that everyone can benefit from. game nights can be an ideal way for families to spend time together. Psychologists note these sessions strengthen family bonds, enhance social skills and foster emotional well-being. FAMILY

G ratitude is not just an emotion, it’s a quiet awakening of the heart. It reminds us that the best parts of life are not found in what we own, but in who we share our moments with. When we slow down long enough to notice the warmth of a loved one’s laughter, the smell of cookies in the oven, or the sound of grandparents’ voices telling stories of long ago, we begin to understand the depth of what it means to be truly thankful.

The Gift of Gratitude Family, Grandparents, and the Timeless Bonds We Share

In a world that moves at an unrelenting pace, time with family has become sacred. e days slip by quickly, lled with endless to-do lists and screens that pull us in every direction. Gratitude calls us to pause—to look across the table at those who have walked beside us and realize how precious these shared moments are. Whether it’s an aernoon spent working on a jigsaw puzzle, a weekend road trip, or simply sitting together watching the sun set, these fragments of togetherness become the lasting mosaic of our lives. Grandparents, in particular, embody the quiet beauty of gratitude. Their stories are stitched with resilience, humor, and love, the kind that endures. When we sit at their feet and listen, we are not only hearing their past but being reminded of our own place in a larger story. They show us that gratitude is not about having everything; it’s about appreciating the thread of connection that binds generations together. Every family recipe passed down, every piece of advice given, every embrace held a little longer, all of it becomes a legacy of love that reaches far beyond the holidays.

ere is something profoundly grounding about spending time in the presence of those who have seen more seasons of life. ey remind us that joy is oen found in the simple, ordinary things, baking bread, tending a garden, serving others quietly and faithfully. Gratitude turns these moments into something sacred. It teaches us that love is not measured in grand gestures but in small acts of care: a shared cup of tea, a phone call to check in, a helping hand in the kitchen. As families gather around tables, in living rooms, on back porches, the energy of gratitude transforms the space. It soens edges, mends distances, and allows laughter to echo freely. e holidays oen give us a reason to reconnect, but gratitude urges us to make connection a rhythm, not a season. It asks us to hold onto these memories not as snapshots of eeting joy but as reminders of what truly sustains us: belonging, forgiveness, and the deep comfort of being known. In practicing gratitude, we create a tapestry of memory that time cannot unravel. We remember the smell of a grandparent’s home, the sound of

family stories that grow funnier with each retelling, the way love feels when it shows up quietly and consistently. Gratitude gives these memories color and meaning; it allows them to live on long aer the moment has passed. So as we move beyond the holidays and back into the routines of everyday life, may we continue to carry gratitude with us, not as an obligation, but as a way of living. Let it guide us to spend time more intentionally, to love more generously, and to notice more deeply. Because the truth is, the moments we cherish most are rarely extraordinary, they are simply shared. And when we gather with open hearts, grateful for one another, even the smallest moments become timeless.

home, where the holiday season begins in earnest. After gathering the necessary ingredients from the local market, I devote a day in her kitchen to preparing my Pumpkin Praline Cheesecake. Over the years it has become as essential to our celebration as the turkey itself. There is a quiet pleasure in the process— the gingersnap crust pressed neatly into the pan, the smooth pumpkin filling infused with warm spices, and the praline pecans simmering until glossy and fragrant. As family and friends gather, laughter and conversation drift through the rooms, and glasses of wine are always close at hand. This cheesecake has come to embody the essence of Thanksgiving: a graceful blend of tradition, comfort, and the flavors we anticipate year after year.

TRADITION FLORIDA Neighborhood Farmer's Market

“It’s not just about selling, it’s about connecting. We’ve seen kids grow up here, families come back year after year. It’s like being part of something bigger than ourselves.”

12

Coastal Pearl Living - Gratitude

A As the Florida sun begins to rise over Tradition Square, the hum of activity signals that Sunday morning has arrived, and with it, the heartbeat of the community, the Neighborhood Farmers Market at Tradition Square, held every Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nestled in the heart of Port St. Lucie’s most charming master-planned town, the market is more than a place to shop, it’s a celebration of community spirit and connection. Rows of white tents line the cobblestone streets, their canvas tops fluttering in the coastal breeze. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee mingles with the sweetness of kettle corn, while the strum of a local guitarist drifts through the square, creating the perfect soundtrack for a Sunday stroll. Locals arrive on bicycles, pushing strollers, or walking dogs, each greeted by familiar smiles. Friends pause to chat over baskets of just-picked produce, and neighbors catch up on the week’s news. The market feels like an open-air reunion that happens every Sunday — a place where everyone belongs and every booth tells its own story. At one stand, a fourth-generation farmer from nearby Fort Pierce proudly displays rows of sun-warmed tomatoes and crisp cucumbers, each picked fresh at sunrise. Across the aisle, the soothing scents of handmade soaps, lavender, lemongrass, and orange blossom, invite shoppers to linger. A retired art teacher showcases hand-painted seashells that capture the vivid hues of Florida’s coastal sunsets, while local bakers tempt passersby with still-warm loaves of bread and trays of golden pastries. There are no chain vendors or flashing signs her, just local passion and pride. “It’s about more than selling,” says Maria, who runs a honey stand with her husband. “We’ve watched kids grow up here, families return year after year. It’s like being part of something bigger than ourselves.” Every Sunday, the square transforms into a hub for artisans, musicians, foodies, and dreamers alike. It’s where community groups host raffles, local chefs source ingredients, and newcomers find a warm welcome. As the afternoon sun sparkles on the nearby lake, laughter and conversation fill the air. By the time vendors begin to pack up, bags are filled with fresh produce and handmade treasures — but what people truly take home is a feeling of connection, authenticity, and belonging.

Tailored

To Perfection True style begins with the cut of a suit. Beyond trend or time, a well tailored suit defines a man’s presence long before he speaks. It’s not about excess it’s about precision. The discerning gentleman needs only four suits, each crafted to serve a purpose, each whispering sophisticated craftsmanship, not flash

20

Coastal Pearl Living - Gratitude

Navy Essential

The navy suit is the anchor of a refined wardrobe quietly powerful, endlessly versatile, and unmistakably elegant. It moves effortlessly from office to evening, from power meeting to private dinner. In bespoke form, structure is everything: a strong shoulder, clean chest, and tapered waist create silhouette and strength. Pair it with a crisp white shirt and silk tie for business, or leave the collar open to let confidence, not clothing, do the talking.

Grey Executive

If navy is your cornerstone, charcoal grey is your armor. This is the suit that commands a room without raising its voice. The texture of a fine worsted wool or subtle herringbone weave adds depth, while precise tailoring narrow lapels, hand-finished seams, and high armholes conveys authority through restraint. This is the uniform of the man who leads with quiet certainty.

The Statement

Every man needs one suit that turns heads discreetly. A deep green, subtle plaid, or midnight blue pattern adds personality to precision. This is not about flamboyance; it’s about self-assurance. Tailoring this suit demands mastery: perfect drape, balanced proportion, and fabric that holds its shape. The result? A look that’s distinct, not loud memorable for its confidence, not its color.

In the end, style is not abundance it’s intention. Four suits, flawlessly tailored, can carry a man anywhere in the world. Because true luxury isn’t about being seen. It’s about being remembered.

Fall Inspired Specialty Drinks

While avors such as pumpkin spice, cinnamon, and nutmeg can be used year-round for drinks, they certainly seem to taste better (and make sense, thematically) during the fall months. Turning your typical day-to-day coee or tea into an autumn inspired drink can be as easy as adding a sprinkle of spice, or even just

using a dierent avor creamer. For these four recipes, I used easy to nd ingredients that you likely already have in your pantry. Play around and experiment with dierent combinations to nd your own personal fall-inspired caeinated beverage and enjoy the taste of autumn!

Iced Vanilla Cinnamon Latte Ingredients: Stok cold brew Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Milk Ground Cinnamon

Extraordinarily easy, this recipe is perfect for anyone who prefers a minimal eort pick-me-up. Grab your favorite cold brew (mine is the Stok brand), unsweetened vanilla almond milk, and a pinch of ground cinnamon. For a creamier version, use the French Vanilla Coee-Mate creamer.

24

Coastal Pearl Living - Gratitude

Vanilla Maple Chai Ingredients: French Vanilla Chai Teaspoon of Maple Syrup Ground Cinnamon Whole Milk

Combine chai, maple, and cinnamon for a uniquely fall-avored tea. My preferred chai tea-bag is the French Vanilla Chai from Twinings, but any brand of chai will do. While your tea is steeping, heat up some milk (either on the stove top or in the microwave) so it’s at least 150° F, then add in a pinch of cinnamon and a teaspoon of maple syrup. I like to put about half of the milk mixture right into the tea. en, use a handheld frother and move it in a circular motion in your remaining mixture for approximately 20-45 seconds, or until the milk has doubled in volume. Pour it on top of your well-steeped chai, then nish it o with a sprinkle of cinnamon and enjoy!

My personal favorite recipe from these four options, the Butter Pecan Salted Caramel Latte is a perfect fall-inspired beverage that is relatively simple to make, even for a non-barista! In a percolator, make a cup of New England Coee’s Butter Pecan Coee. While it brews, heat up approximately half a cup of whole milk to at least 150° F. Pour a small amount right into your freshly brewed coee, and then use a frother on the remaining milk. Add in a dash (or more, if you have a bit of a sweet tooth) of salted caramel syrup into your coee. Finally, pour the frothed milk over your delicious smelling coee and enjoy the avors of fall! Butter Pecan Salted Caramel Latte Ingredients: Butter Pecan Coee Salted Caramel Syrup Whole Milk Cinnamon and Hazelnut was a new avor combination for me, but it wildly exceeded my expectations! Use the Cinnamon Hazelnut coee from New England Coee in a percolator. In a separate cup, heat up about a half cup of whole milk. Once heated, add cinnamon, and caramel syrup into your milk mixture. I like adding about half of that mixture directly into my brewed coee, and then using a frother on the rest of the mixture. Once your milk is nice and foamy and has doubled in size, pour it over your coee and top that o with a bit of cinnamon. The Coastal Bookshelf Recommended Powerful Currents in Literature

A Land Remembered by Patrick D. Smith Reviewed by Denise Copeland

Patrick D. Smith’s A Land Remembered is a sweeping and unforgettable novel that captures the raw essence of Florida before highways, resorts, and subdivisions, a place of beauty, danger, and unrelenting struggle. rough vivid storytell- ing and unforgettable characters, Smith transports readers through more than a century of change, from the mid-1800s frontier to the modern age. What results is not only the story of a family, but also of a land and its transformation. At its heart, the novel follows the MacIvey family across three generations. Tobias MacIvey, a poor but determined pioneer, moves his family into the wilds of Florida to start anew. Life for Tobias, his wife Emma, and their son Zech is hard, the swamps are lled with mosquitoes, panthers, and oods, yet their courage and perseverance dene the early chapters of the state’s history. eir story embodies the grit and endurance of the pioneers who tamed the wilderness and built the foundations of modern Florida. Smith paints each scene with such realism that you can almost hear the crack of whips on cattle drives, feel the thick, humid air, and see the sun setting over the Everglades. To- bias’s friendship with the Seminoles and freed Black settlers reveals the deep humanity and cooperation oen le out of history books. ese moments of shared survival are among the novel’s most moving. As the story continues through Zech and his son Solomon (“Sol”), Smith explores love, ambition, and loss with heart- breaking honesty. Zech’s divided loyalties between his wife Glenda and his Seminole love Tawanda reect the complexi- ty of life in a time when race and identity were in ux. When the novel transitions to Sol’s generation, we see the toll of progress, the rise of Miami, the draining of the land, and the great Okeechobee ood that reshaped South Florida forever.

Sol’s wealth and success come at a cost: the fading memory of the wild, unspoiled Florida his grandfather once knew. What makes A Land Remembered truly remarkable is how accessible and captivating it is. Even readers who aren’t naturally drawn to history will nd themselves swept up in this powerful, human story. Smith writes with such heart and clarity that the reader feels deeply connected to both the characters and the land itself. e book reminds us that progress oen demands sacrice, but the land, and the spirit of those who came before, will always be remembered. A Land Remembered is more than a historical novel; it’s a love letter to Florida and a timeless reection on endurance, family, and the cost of change. It’s one of those rare books that stays with you long aer you close the cover. Tagua Jewelry Seeds of change Deep in the lush rainforests of Ecuador grows the Amazonian palm tree, home to one of nature’s most extraordinary gis, the tagua seed. Encased inside the fruit of the palm, oen called the “tagua coconut,” these seeds begin so and milky but harden over the course of nearly a year into a dense, ivory-like material. When fully matured, the coconuts fall naturally to the forest oor, where they are gathered by hand in a harvest that sustains the land without harming the trees. Once polished and carved, the seeds reveal a luminous nish so similar to elephant ivory that they are known worldwide as “vegetable ivory.” For generations, artisans in Ecuador have transformed these seeds into jewelry and decorative art, turning a humble coconut into timeless beauty. Roots in Ecuador Enter Soraya Cedeño. As she traveled the world, she carried a deep love for her culture and her people, always determined to one day give back to the gied artisans of her hometown. at determination, enriched by her experiences abroad, would ultimately take shape in the creation of Tagua Jewelry. For Soraya, who grew up in a small coastal village of Ecuador, the tagua seed was more than a material. It was part of her cultural fabric, a symbol of artistry, resilience, and connection to the earth. Years later, aer immigrating to the United States and building a career and family, she would carry this memory back into her life in a powerful way. What began as a childhood familiarity with artisanship became the inspiration for a business that now spans continents. And so, on a quiet, manicured street in a pristine commerce park in Jupiter, the story of the Amazonian palm tree continues in an entirely new form, Tagua Jewelry. Here, Soraya has built a company that honors her heritage while creating a global stage for sustainable fashion and fair trade.

Yet it was her son, Matthew, who reshaped the family’s path. Matthew is nonverbal and attends the Ernie Els School for Autism in Jupiter. For him to qualify, the family relocated to Palm Beach County. What began as a necessity blossomed into a blessing. e move not only gave Matthew the support he needed but also positioned Soraya to grow a company that now touches lives across continents. The Birth of Tagua Jewelry In Jupiter, Soraya reconnected with her roots and envisioned a way to merge her heritage with her professional skills. Drawing on her lifelong connection to Ecuador and her deep commitment to advocacy, she saw the potential for jewelry not only as fashion but also as a vehicle for change. As Founder and Creative Director, Soraya brought together her dual passions, supporting her hometown artisans and helping families aected by autism. With a long history of working closely with local and national autism foundations, she had spent years raising awareness and seeking creative ways to generate donations. Out of that mission came a simple yet powerful idea, a puzzle piece bracelet craed from tagua, symbolizing both autism awareness and the artistry of her native Ecuador.

Every piece of Tagua jewelry carries not only beauty but also a story of culture, community, and hope.

We’re not just creating jewelry. We are creating opportunities.

A Life Rewritten by Faith Aer immigrating to the United States, Soraya began her career in marketing with Harte Hanks Marketing Services in Miami. In time, she married, settled in Jensen Beach, and started a family. She later worked alongside her husband in his family’s printing and publishing company, where she gained the hands- on operational experience that would later guide her as an entrepreneur.

e success of that bracelet became the catalyst for something far greater. What began with just three artisans in Ecuador soon grew into Organic Tagua Jewelry, a family-owned and operated company. Today, the brand partners with more than 100 artisans, providing dignied employment where values

The Elegance of Gratitude Celebrating Family & Friends, With Flavor and Tradition

appear on the table or the day just doesn’t feel complete. What are yours? Do you lean toward the classics like turkey and mashed potatoes, or is your family known for one special dish that makes your anksgiving unique? For me, I could never skip a bowl of homemade mashed potatoes, uy and rich with just the right amount of butter. Green bean casserole is another that always nds its way into the oven, bubbling under its golden crust of fried onions. I adore stung too, the more herbs the better. And I can’t imagine the holiday without a bright cranberry and orange sauce to cut through all that richness. Of course, homemade gravy ties it all together, ladled generously over just about everything on my plate. is past year, the ight from Palm Beach was short, but stepping into Ohio’s late November air always felt like entering another world. e cold, always sharp sliced through my soul, and the sky heavily settled into the heavy gray of early winter. e last leaves clung to the red maples that lined my mother’s street, their nal burst of color uttering down to the ground in slow spirals. A narrow creek ran behind the houses on her side of the road, carrying leaves along its banks, while snow urries dried across the air, teasing of the season to come. Deer wandered through the neighborhood, quiet and unhurried, foraging for what little the ground still oered. By the time I reached the wide driveway of the house, the lights on the porch glowed through the cold and smoke curled from the chimney.

Hosting anksgiving is one of those experiences that is equal parts joy and chaos, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Every year, I nd myself wondering how others celebrate. Do you host the big meal at your home, with the table stretched to its limit to t everyone in? Or do you pack up the car, maybe even board a plane, to spend the holiday with family or friends somewhere else? Does travel play a role in your tradition, or do you get to stay close to home and let everyone come to you? I love hearing how dierent families shape the day in their own way, yet at its’ heart, anksgiving is always about coming together.

And then of course there is the food. Everyone has their favorites, those dishes that simply must

It was the same sight I had known since childhood, a home that seemed to breathe us all back into it this time of year.

is was the anksgiving I had always known, more

e door opened before I reached it and my mother was standing there with her familiar smile, the warmth of the re behind her spilling out into the chilly evening. Inside, the house was already alive with voices and laughter. My brother’s greeting rang from the family room and the younger ones hurried past with ushed faces and arms full of bags and coats. My daughter and her husband had just arrived aer the long drive from Skipwith, Virginia. ey brought venison sausage from their hunting ranch and baskets of blueberries from the elds of White Oaks Preserve, where they host their annual festival in the summer. eir little girl (my granddaughter) ran straight for the grand piano in the great room and began plinking out notes that echoed through the tall space. e dining room looked down on it all, the children’s table already set as it always had been, waiting for the next generation to gather. A dog darted through the rooms, barking with excitement and making a game of tormenting my mother’s cat, who perched with disdain on the back of a chair. More family would soon arrive, cousins from Pittsburgh carrying boxes of sfogliatelle, biscotti, cannoli, and the ever-anticipated pepperoni bread still warm from their ovens. Friends from childhood would wander in as the evening stretched, drawn as always by tradition and the promise of food, wine, and a variety of games that lasted deep into the night. By the time darkness fell, the house seemed to glow from within. e re snapped in the family room and trays of sausage, cheeses, and breads lay waiting to be picked over as glasses of wine were passed around. Scrabble tiles clattered on one table, while Rumicube pieces clicked on another, and every so oen laughter spilled through the halls louder than the games themselves. e kitchen was full of motion,

than a holiday, more than a meal. It was a return, a gathering, a weaving together of past and present. It was the house itself, wide and welcoming, that held the years and the people inside it. Every time I arrived

I carried with me childhood memories of these rooms, of the creek outside, of the piano notes driing up to the balcony, of cousins running through the halls. And every time I le I carried new memories too, added like stitches to a quilt, another year layered onto all the others. It was in the food we shared, in the laughter, in the warmth of the re, in the simple joy of being together again. And year aer year it was this place, this time, that reminded me what home truly means. What I’ve come to realize is that anksgiving menus are as much about tradition as they are about taste. ey tell the story of where we’ve been, who we’re with, and the little rituals that make the day feel like our own. Whether you’re the host orchestrating the feast or a guest bringing along your favorite dish, there’s something so comforting about knowing that the avors on your table connect you to the people around it. continued

aromas of cinnamon, nutmeg, and roasted meats driing together until the whole house smelled of comfort.
