SALT LAKE CITY: GIRL SCOUTS OF AMERICA, CAMP FURY BURN DEMONSTRATION
Lead by some of Salt Lake's finest female firefighters, Camp Fury Utah presents attending Girl Scouts the chance to catch a glimpse of what it takes to have a career in public safety. The three-day camp teaches the young women everything from basic skills to safety training. They learn first aid, ground ladder throwing, the mechanics of hoses, and what it's like to hold the hose as water starts actively pumping through it. The ladies get to experience rappelling, and window jumping while wearing full firefighter gear. As a simulation of the conditions firefighters can experience in smoky buildings that have lost power, they even practice crawling on their knees blindfolded. Overall, the camp offers these young women an experience of a lifetime, and helps to breaks the stigma that public safety careers are for men only. At the conclusion of the three-day camp, the Girl Scouts get the opportunity to witness a side-by-side burn demonstration. Two mock living rooms are set up next to each other; one equipped with fire sprinklers, and one without, allowing them to see firsthand the difference a sprinkler system makes. For the second year in a row, Delta Fire Salt Lake was a proud sponsor and participant in this simulation burn, supplying everything for the demonstration from the burn trailer to all the furniture needed.
Matt Finlayson, Jose Lima, and Zach Barney volunteered their time, putting in hard work removing burned furnishings, re-rocking, and painting the container. Vince Newberg, Bo Corbin, Christine Gil, and David Dawaele hosted as the event's emcees
