partnering in alabama for training in healthcare

Who:

The Partnering in Alabama for Training in Healthcare (PATH) initiative is a collaborative effort between Faulkner University College of Health Sciences and the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) . This partnership is dedicated to delivering hands-on training to Home Health nurses and Emergency Preparedness personnel through advanced simulation-based education . In addition to ADPH, this initiative aims to bolster preparedness among providers for the Alabama National Guard, Children’s Rehab Services, AL State Department of Education, Emergency Management Agency, Hyundai, Haynes Life Flight, and other organizations where proper training is essential. The goal of PATH is to provide FREE education, training, and expanded job opportunities for healthcare workers across the state by establishing an interprofessional simulation training site for healthcare-related skills and emergency preparedness at the Faulkner University College of Health Sciences Simulation Center.

What: Why: Alabama has a large, well-known disparity in healthcare access, especially in rural areas where there is little to no access to advanced simulation technology that is beneficial to train and prepare healthcare providers. Public health emergencies such as disasters, disease outbreaks, and other medical events happen unexpectedly. Functioning in a constant state of preparedness can save lives. Through planning and training in medical response scenarios, providers and communities as a whole can be better prepared and able to take care of their constituents. Research shows that hands-on training improves provider confidence, which in turn leads to improved patient outcomes, ultimately leading to decreased healthcare costs . The PATH partnership will advance the healthcare industry in Alabama by addressing workforce shortages, improving access to care, and enhancing medical preparedness through advanced simulation training. The project aligns with both regional and state economic development strategies, contributing to workforce development, promoting innovation, improving healthcare access in underserved areas, and supporting long-term economic growth in Alabama.

The Alabama Department of Public Health is very grateful to have developed this partnership with the Faulkner College of Health Sciences. The PATH program provides invaluable training opportunities for many ADPH employees, including nursing and preparedness staff members. We are fortunate to have access to this initiative.” Scott Harris MD, MPH, FACP, FIDSA, State Health Officer Alabama Department of Public Health Innovators in Training!
