reds on the prairie sale 2025
Clarence Caraway (1944-2023) grew up on a Hereford Farm in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. PASSIONATE ABOUT THE RED ANGUS BREED CLARENCE CARAWAY
WELCOME TO THE 2025 REDS ON THE PRAIRIE AUCTION As I write this opening ROP letter, it is with a heavy heart that Bill Schermer, one of our ringmen and great supporters of this event will not be in attendance. The shocking loss of Bill on October 16th will resonate throughout the cattle industry and auction circuit for years to come. You will be missed my friend. The Reds On The Prairie Auction has become one of the most dynamic events in the Red Angus industry. This auction offers a combination of breathtaking show heifers with a consistent set of “real world” bred heifers to build a nucleus herd or add to an existing one. The quality of Red Angus cattle and genetics in Brookings, South Dakota is unmatched anywhere in the continental United States – yep, I said it – the quality in Brookings will rival any of the Red Angus auctions that you might think are better anywhere! Please make plans to come and attend all of the events surrounding the ROP. From the $20,000 Futurity Show on Friday afternoon to the banquet Friday night at the auction headquarters to the ROP auction itself at the Dacotah Bank Center on Saturday, November 15th. The interaction you can get from a live-auction event is second to none in this industry – come join some of the most progressive Red Angus cattle producers in the world for a festive and enjoyable weekend. If you cannot attend, I invite you to join us and bid online with DVAuction. We will assist you with grouping cattle deliveries to minimize trucking costs to the best of our ability. If you have any questions about this event or any of the lots in this offering, please contact myself either of the ringmen or any of the consignors listed in this catalog. We appreciate your interest in the Red On The Prairie weekend and with this cattle market . . . . . . . . let the good times roll !!! Best Regards & Safe Travels, Kyle Gilchrist ROP Auction Manager & Auctioneer
Clarence showed cattle at local, state, and national shows in his younger years. After graduating from high school, Clarence was a Ranch Manager for Walter Schultz and Delaney Herefords. Clarence married Mary Delaney in 1968, and together they started their herd of Hereford cattle. They shared their passion of showing cattle with their six children: Barb, James, Lori, Mary Kay, Corey, and Jon. Their summers were spent showing cattle. In 1993, Clarence bought his first Red Angus Cows from Powell’s (Howard, SD), Straka’s (O’Neil, NE), and Sonstegard’s (Montevideo, MN) which was the start of Clarence Caraway Family Red Angus. Clarence was intrigued by the Red Angus breed, though unfamiliar with them at first. Clarence admired the Red Angus cows for being good mothers and were more docile than Black Angus. In 1995, Clarence was ahead of his time and did something that set him apart from other cattlemen around, he started fall calving with half of his herd. Clarence also used land conservation practices like rotational grazing before they became common in the region. In 1996, Clarence initiated the discussion to start the Minnesota Junior Red Angus Association. He was a mentor for many young cattle producers, many of whom credit him for their start in the industry. Clarence was a key part in starting the Minnesota Red Angus State Auction. The first state Auction was held in Motley, MN in 1996. Clarence had both an innovative mind as well as his faith. These were both pillars of his character and how he would share his story. Clarence served on many local and state boards: Minnesota Beef Council, Minnesota Grazing Association, Lyon-Lincoln Electric, Minnesota Hereford Association, Minnesota Red Angus Association, Lincoln County Co-op Oil, church cemetery board, and church council. Clarence’s legacy lives on through his family, his cattle, and the agricultural community he devoted his life to. Clarence’s best times were going to cattle shows, watching his kids and grandkids show, visiting with old friends, and making new.
