The Valoris Foundation has launched its 34th annual Christmas Elves cam- paign, an initiative aimed at ensuring children and youth in need across Prescott and Russell receive gifts for the holiday season. Last year, nearly 800 young people benefited from the program, and Valoris is once again calling on the community’s generosity to help make this year’s cam- paign a success. This year, the Foundation is offering several ways for residents to participate. Pick an Elf Starting immediately, elves are available at Valoris service centres and participa- ting businesses across the region. Each elf includes a wish list from a local child. Community members can choose an elf, purchase the requested items, and return the unwrapped gifts by Friday, December 5. A full list of participating businesses can be found on the Valoris Foundation website, which includes nine places in Hawkesbury

Les habitants de Prescott et Russell et d’autres régions de l’est de l’Ontario ont pu admirer un spectacle lumineux céleste inattendu à la mi-novembre. Une série de tempêtes solaires a donné lieu à un spectacle étendu d’aurores boréales, également connues sous le nom de lumières du nord, plus au sud que leur région d’apparition habituelle. De nom- breuses régions du sud du Canada peuvent parfois observer des aurores boréales au milieu de l’hiver lorsque les conditions météorologiques locales le permettent, mais le spectacle n’est souvent pas aussi brillant que celui que peuvent voir les habi- tants de la région arctique, avec moins de couleurs. Cependant, le spectacle qui s’est produit à la mi-novembre et qui a duré plusieurs nuits était un cas particulier en raison des effets de la tempête solaire sur le soleil de la Terre. Les centres de recherche nationaux au Canada et aux États-Unis qui surveillent l’activité solaire ont signalé que le soleil avait subi une série d’éruptions solaires puissantes suivies d’éjections de masse coronale (EMC) importantes. Just one week after suffering conse- cutive losses, the Rockland Nationals bounced back. The reigning and defending Bogart Cup champions suffered their first and second losses of the season last week that ulti- mately snapped their impressive 15 game winning streak. But Rockland was able to get back into the win column after wins over the Brockville Braves and the Carleton Place Canadians last weekend, With the wins, the Nats improve to 17-2- 0-0 on the season and sit atop the Central Canada Hockey League (CCHL) standings with 34 points. They are one point ahead of the Ottawa Junior Senators, who sit second in the Yzerman Division. On the road against Brockville The Nats were hoping to get back into the win column when they travelled to Brockville to take on the Braves on Friday, Nov. 14. And while the Braves to an early 1-0 lead and held on to that lead into the second d period, the Nats were able to score three unanswered goals and rally towards a 3-1 win. Gabriel Le Houillier, Mavrick Brunet and Conor Pierson scored for Rockland while Jack Carter stopped 21 of 22 shots earning the win goal. Hosting Carleton Place After ending their two-game losing streak on the road against Brockville, Rockland was looking to extend a win streak when they hosted the Carleton Place Canadians on Saturday, Nov. 15. Gabriel Le Houillier scored twice to lift the Nationals to a 5-2 win. With the pair of goals, the Nationals’ assistant captain is now up to 20 goals on the season. Mathis Baril, Dylan Allie and Mavrick Brunet scored Rockland’s other goals. Jack Carter was once again stellar in goal for Rockland, stopping 29 of 31 shots he faced.

Le capitaine des Rockland Nationals, Mathys Laurent, suit les traces de son frère aîné et se rapproche de chez lui à la fin de sa carrière chez les Nats. Comme son frère aîné, Xavier, Mathys a joué en défense et a porté le très convoité « C » pour l’organisation des Nationals. Et comme Xavier, Mathys mettra ses talents au service de l’université Concordia de Montréal lorsque son contrat avec Rockland prendra fin. Il prévoit de se concentrer sur la finance, car il dit avoir toujours été « doué avec les chiffres ». « Je pense que c’était une évidence », a déclaré Mathys dans une interview accordée à Le Vision après que l’équipe ait annoncé qu’il s’était engagé à rejoindre l’université Concordia à l’automne pro- chain. « Le fait d’avoir quelqu’un à l’inté- rieur qui peut me montrer les ficelles du métier et qui m’a tout raconté sur l’école et le programme de hockey m’aide aussi. Pour moi, le hockey sera toujours ma priorité et mon objectif est d’aller aussi loin que possible. » Mathys se dit impatient de retrou- ver son frère et d’avoir la chance de partager du temps sur la glace avec lui, alors qu’ils se préparent tous deux pour une saison avec le programme de hockey masculin de l’université. Lutter contre la violence envers les femmes : UN DEVOIR COLLECTIF parmi les conséquences directes de cette problématique. La violence, autrefois associée presque exclusivement à sa forme physique, est en effet devenue beaucoup plus pernicieuse, et ses effets parfois invisibles. Un dialogue franc et ouvert s’avère nécessaire afin d’accélérer la prise d’actions concrètes pour contrer cette mouvance.
L’essor massif du numérique et la montée de divers discours haineux sont devenus des vecteurs de violence dans les dernières années, notamment à l’égard des femmes. Le comité organisateur coordonne 12 jours d’action contre les violences faites aux femmes dans un souci de souligner l’importance de ce devoir collectif. UN ENJEU AUSSI SÉRIEUX QU’ACTUEL Les femmes, dont celles qui sont issues de l’immigration, de la communauté ou qui sont en situation de handicap, sont exposées à plusieurs types de violence, lesquels ont connu une forte croissance avec le développement des réseaux sociaux. L’absence de régulation efficace des espaces numériques et la banalisation de certaines actions violentes (verbales, en ligne, etc.), entre autres, contribuent quotidiennement au phénomène. L’isolement, psychologique et le recul général de la participation des femmes aux débats publics figurent la détresse
